Resmed S8 Escape II - NEW???

Post by Slickice » Mon Mar 17, 2014 3:58 pm

I am new to CPAP and I just received my new machine last week. When I went to the medical equipment supplier, I was not given a choice of machine but rather was given a Resmed S8 Escape II machine - told it was all insurance would pay for. In researching the machine, I find it is no longer available and has been discontinued.

Can anyone tell me how long ago it was discontinued. I'm thinking I've been sold a used machine as new and my supplier has some 'splaining to do.

The S9s came out in 2010. So that's when the S8s were discontinued.
I would be checking to see if I could use another DME. Not only did this one sell you a brick...it is an old discontinued brick at that. Please read this..especially the part about "Help, I have been given a brick"

Also read this

They also lied to you about "all your insurance will pay for". Your insurance company doesn't pay by model name...they pay by HCPCS code and all cpap/apap machines use the same code. Call your insurance company and ask.
HCPCS code for cpap/apap (full data or brick) is E0601.

At this point even if the S8 had zero hours on it you don't want it.
It lacks improved new technology and it lacks any useful data.

I agree.......TAKE IT BACK. If they won't give you an up to date model....go some place else. You are the customer. Call your insurance company and report them!

Yeah, take it back, and if they give you trouble, call your insurance and alert the media. That DME is a schmuck to give you an old discontinued machine. If you ask your Dr to write a script for an a AUTO CPAP (ResMed S-9 is nice and gives data) the DME MUST give you what he orders. But your Dr needs to specify "ResMedS-9" or "automatic CPAP and patient's choice of mask". Your PCP can write you a script, doesn't have to be a sleep specialist.Take your new script to another DME-check with your insurance which one you need to use. If it is the same schmuck, ask if there is any way around that particular supplier since they don't have your best interest in mind. They have SOME nerve!

Be careful with the "automatic CPAP" stipulation.......ResMed also makes a piece of crap called the "Escape Auto" which is another "brick" with very little usable information.
If you're going with the ResMed brand, only accept the "S9 Autoset" or the "S9 Elite" (not auto, but it's fully data-capable).

Add me to the take it back crowd... seriously! Your insurance company pays one price for all machines in that class. Many providers see nothing wrong with supplying the cheapest machine they can find in that class, regardless of what effect that is likely to have for your future health.

One of the major reasons most of us consider machines like the Escape to be completely unacceptable is the lack of feedback about treatment effectiveness. The lowest end machines just blow pressure and record how long you used the machine for insurance requirements compliance. If the treatment isn't effective, there is no way to check. If the treatment is effective at preventing the problem the sleep lab identified, but causing another, there is no way to check. If the treatment is effective at first but your needs change over time, there is no way to check.

Slightly higher cost machines display simple summary feedback about your treatment effectiveness on the machine and record detailed information that can be viewed on a computer if you believe your treatment isn't working as it should or needs adjustment.

Thanks so much to everyone for the information. I'm going back - fully armed - to confront my DME.

Hopefully they are receptive to your concerns. There is a thread on the first page or two called My Melodrama where a new user was given a machine with a prescription of 17. She was unable to sleep at that pressure, completely discouraged, and ready to give up. She decided to try taking charge of her own treatment, reduced her pressure to 9 just to get accustomed to using the machine at a pressure she could sleep at, and discovered from the machine data that she got very effective treatment at 9 while successfully sleeping through the night. She is now optimistic instead of discouraged, and it looks like she is on track to successful treatment instead of almost certainly giving up. If she hadn't had effectiveness data she wouldn't have known 9 was working instead of just assuming 17 was the best she could get.

If you're curious you can check Total Run Hours on the machine. This is not the same as therapy hours or "hours used."

But new or used, they did you an egregious disservice. What a wretched operation, that DME. Run fast, run far!

MOTOR Hours shows "1115" - does this mean that the unit has over 1,000 hours on it?

You especially need LEAK data--not the red or green smiley (idiot light)
When my mask leaks, I'm asleep--so I have no idea that my cushion is getting ineffective.

I think a lot of us would like to accompany you when you show up at that DME with the USED DISCONTINUED BRICK! That's at least three levels of WRONG.

I've read some pretty shady DME stories on this forum, but this is the worst yet! Once you get this straightened out (and I'm sure you will), please do us all a favor by writing your insurance company with a copy to that DME. I can't believe that they actually think they can get away with doing something like that. That place should be put out of business as quickly as possible.
