Here's another version of what Julie quoted:

"First they came"

""In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

-- by Martin Niemöller, prominent German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor, best known as the author of the above poem.

It is not difficult. My FB pages are full of this crap.

Besides you all seem to think judging other countries systems is fine. Have some of your own medicine back

It isn't a matter of it being AMERICAN, ie, USA, Christianity.

Pretty much any country in the Americas and many in other parts of the world got the short stick, with the idea of wiping out native civilization and culture and substituting that of the colonizers.

You made that up and even changed my quote.

I consider everyone on the planet my neighbor. Even you dishonest Nate.

How far away do I have to move? With neighbours like that one doesn't need enemies!

Geez Blackspinner, what's up with you? Americans are among the friendliest people in the world. Very neighborly.
Maybe you need to get out more.

I did nothing more than add emphasis to the critical words in your sentence. I didn't choose those words - you did.

Here's a photo of your quote:

What words did I change?

I wish all these political battles would stop or at least be strictly confined to a separate category.

Yes, part of the reason for my request is because I allow myself to get sucked into them when I know I should not. However, you have attacked a key part of my religion and I will respond.

Nate, you were being dishonest when you wrote,
And leave it to you to conclude that the word chosen in English - "neighbor" - to represent the words in the original language was intended to just mean the people living next door to you!
There was nothing in Granny's post that indicated she meant such a limited translation. In a follow up comment she indicates "neighbor" means everyone on the planet.

I have lived in the Deep South around many very fundamentalist people who are prone to take the Bible literally in sections where it is clearly not. However, I never met one person who would say "neighbor" meant only the person living next door. They all believe it means all mankind.

But I will give you the benefit of doubt and say that maybe you were not being dishonest. Secularists are famous for grossly misunderstanding what religious people believe and for an inability to understand the message of the Bible.

May you have a blessed day,
Sheffey

Thank you, Sheffey for ultimately deciding in your post to give me the benefit of doubt about ChicagoGranny's attack upon my personal integrity.

Apparently you weren't equally bothered by this part of her remarks directed at all others here with whom she politically disagrees:
ChicagoGranny wrote:

Now wasn't that a lovely thing for her to say?

Actually, I don't personally view this thread as a discussion about, nor attack upon, anyone's religion. Rather, it has taken a turn towards asking whether a few folks contradict their religious principles by their political assertions. The discussion is about politics, economics and the responsibilities of government, not religion. An important difference in my humble opinion.

Best wishes and a blessed day to you as well.

Regards, Nate
