I take a 15 minute break every day to have a cup of coffee and some nourishment. Some days I take a break to go to the bathroom also

Think Ethanol in cars is a new idea? Did you see this shot? Suprised me! From 1933, if I read the date correctly.

Sleep loss is a terrible thing. People get grumpy, short-tempered, etc. That happens here even among the generally friendly. Try not to take it personally.
Re: OT....Take a break from OSA
It looks like that picture with the gas price of 26 cents is from some in the 50's. Average family income in 1950 was about $4000; by 1960 average family income had risen to a bit over $5000.SleepWellCPAP wrote:26 cents a gallon? Those were the days for sure!

I used to ride my motorcycle for 2 weeks on 20 cents worth of regular.

Re: OT....Take a break from OSA
I pumped a lot of gas at 26.9, on a weekend we'd pump 3, 000 gal.
At 26.9 cents, the taxes accounted for 10 cents of the price. No sales tax!
1963, I was asst manager and made a whole $ 1.19 per hour, good times!
My first hired out job was car hop at a drive-in restaurant, a whole 50 cents per hour, also good times! Jim

Yeah, my memories of being a child was gas about those prices, $0.259 to $0.299 a gallon *smile*. But that was when oil was a two or three bucks a barrel.

In the early 1960s, I bought Regular gas at 29.9 cents a gallon AND got a free glass or dish or something for free ! ! !

Do you recognize the picture that "khauser" put in his post? It's from the Nebraska State Historical Society. I'm trying to figure out if it may be in Lincoln or Omaha. The license plate on the car in the rear appears to be "46" county and the front one appears to be "2" county.

Yes, I do remember the S & H Green Stamps - but the free kitchen ware with the gas purchase was withOUT S & H Green Stamps.RogerSC wrote:Remember S&H Green Stamps? After all, for the ridiculous price of 29.9 cents per gallon for gas, they HAD to include a premium for free.

Re: OT....Take a break from OSA
Yes, that was back when there were a lot of independently-owned gas stations and they used to have to compete with each other. Now they're mostly owned by the oil companies whose gas they sell, so they don't do that any more.

Re: OT....Take a break from OSA
Thanks to Google maps, I believe I got it figured out. Those two tall buildings in the background of that picture are on opposite sides of N Street at the corner of 13th in Lincoln. So, that old gas station would have been in the vicinity of 14th and O Street.Wulfman... wrote:CF,chunkyfrog wrote:I used to ride my motorcycle for 2 weeks on 20 cents worth of regular.

Re: OT....Take a break from OSA
When I first started as a hair stylist I worked at a salon where the owner wanted us to pay 25 cents to dry our hair. (Just the stylist) Laundromats had a coin operated hair dryer that you had to pay 25 cents to use. One of the girls had a convertible so we would put a dollars worth of gas in her car and drive around until our hair got dry. It was so much fun!!!
