Here's the start of a pen & ink drawing with water wash. Hopefully you will enjoy seeing the progress from idea to completed painting:

Depends on where you clicked. If you clicked directly on one of the two pictures, it brings up the specific picture you clicked. If you clicked on the original reference photograph, then that's what it enlarges. If you clicked on or near the scanned image, that's what it enlarges. At least that's how Blogger with Chrome behaves on my Windows 7 computer.

If you clicked on a CPAPtalk image and got the reference photo, then it's quite likely I mangled that post. I will go back and check it .. and correct it if needed.

Edit: AVI123, I tested the original post in CPAPtalk and found no problem.

I did a little more on that bridge yesterday.

Let me know if you find this type of post interesting. Is it interesting to see the progress on a work as I am working on it? I am thinking about doing a series of pen & ink drawings of bridges of various types. Would anyone else find that interesting? Let me know.

A question,

John, that roof looks like it's made of sheet metal or fabric or plywood and the wood boards are marked on it. Is it correct? What is it made off in the actual bridge?

I have not seen it in person, but the roof appears to be made of sheet metal. However, it appears that it's several sheets joined together. And that's what I was going for in the look on the drawing. (So, I'm happy to see that you think it looks like sheet metal!). I note that I forgot to add the ridge connection at the top. I will have to add that detail. The framework that you see under the roof is the cross bracing between the timbers on the side. Supported by the timbers, the roof sits slightly above the cross bracing. That is, there appears to be space between the roof and the cross bracing.

I posted a video on my blog that I found of the bridge. It's now almost three years later, so the wood has weathered.

Wow!!! Those are beautiful. Wish I could paint or draw like that, but unfortunately what I see in my head doesn't translate on paper. I shall stick with "Stick People".

Well, it's finished. I've always loved bridges. There's something about their shape, the ability to hold various forces at bay, and the lines that I find fascinating and pleasing. I think I'll work on more bridges as a way to improve my skills. Hopefully this rendition of the Bracklinn Falls Bridge helps brighten your day.

It's beautiful John.
Great job. Almost makes me want to dig out my oils but not quite. I remember struggling with rocks. Something relatively simple most people would think, but in reality getting the shading just right takes some work and it was always a lot of work for me.

It's hard to believe that you so recently discovered this talent of yours. Quite amazing!

I've always been very "visual". I can see things very, very clearly in my "minds eye". To the point that when working on scenery in stage productions, I could accurately mix up and match colors if we ran out of paint - even without looking at the original painted surface. So, while taking the time to do the drawing and painting is new, the visual orientation is not.

Also, even in this painting you can see the progress I make. I try new things in each painting. I am pleased with the tree to the upper right. That foliage looks right in this pen and ink drawing. I'm less pleased with the rest of the foliage. It will take many more paintings before I'm pleased with foliage. There's a little bit of teaching myself what marks best reproduce the texture of the scene. And there's a lot of learning to make those marks consistently and accurately on the page.

As I've noted this is great therapy for me for fine motor control. I refuse to allow the neurological progression to continue unchecked. My hands remain clumsy, but it's like anything else, you need to use it or lose it.

John, I would have applied some worm color to the bridge but would leave the adjacent trees olive green. The faraway
mountains I would leave bleached.

avi123, did you happen to spill that orangeade all over that print? Didn't your mother ever warn you about bringing work to the table? .. ...

Or perhaps you were thinking this bridge is on the planet Vulcan from Star Trek ... ... :
