Maybe if Republicans had not been so hardnosed when the original bill was written (since pulled to pieces trying to satisfy them) it would have done what it was intended to do. Now no one's happy, but I wouldn't blame Democrats for that.

Deerhound, you must not be a Chicagoan. The Trib has never been a "Democrat" newspaper (or, for that matter, a top newspaper). From the 1850s, it was Chicago's Republican newspaper, quite self-consciously so, much of that time standing in contrast to the Democratic Sun-Times (until the Murdoch purchase of that paper). Obama is the only Democrat the Tribune ever endorsed for president, and I feel confident that only his hometown status accounts for this. The 2012 endorsement is an remarkable example of damning with faint praise, including an expression of preference for Romney's economic principles, a reference to its skepticism toward Obamacare, and criticism of the President for making healthcare a priority. The spirit of Colonel McCormick is alive and well at the Chicago Tribune, and its positions, whether right or wrong, can hardly be characterized as Democrats seeing the light.

Republicans weren't invited to the party. Democrats own Obamacare and all the damage it is doing. They could have forced a good workable law through just as easily as the disaster called Obamacare. Should have read it first!

If you think that the Republicans had no influence over the final form of the ACA, you're sadly mistaken! See <http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/pdf/ahca.pdf>

They may not have been invited, but they steamrolled their way in and haven't left.

??? Of course, they were invited! The ACA is something of a bipartisan bill.

Yes, of course they were invited... pleaded with would be a good way to put it, I think. But, I understand what Julie is saying also.

The Repubs were not about to let Obama or his administration pass anything that would help the common folk.

Well, on to at least 18 more pages of this thread...

This comes as no surprise to anyone who actually watched the process unfold. Not one member of Congress who voted for the bill bothered to read it, let alone understand it. No one truly interested in improving the healthcare system in America would have approached it in this manner. Further evidence that it is and has always been more about further concentrating political power than actually helping people. Jimmy Carter is smiling, though. 'Cause he is not longer the worst President in American history.

Nonsense! There were tremendous battles as to how to achieve the improvement and just how much improvement would be covered. It would have been far simpler to just add everyone to Medicare but Republicans wouldn't stand for that. So we got a Frankenstein instead.

Tell me why having universal health coverage for every American makes America a bad place to live, would you?

Why do Republicans want to kill me. I can not get insurance because I have preexisting medical conditions. No Doctor will take me without some assurance that they will be paid. Emergency rooms will only stabilize you and send you on your way. I have been diagnosed with a brain tumor that should MRI d to see if it is growing. Republicans would rather I die than be insured. In Ohio 1 in 4 children has no insurance and receives no medical care. Many children have trouble even getting mandatory shots to attend school. Should any woman who is pregnant and has no insurance through no fault of her own b e forced to abort her child because they have no neo- natal care or pregnancy care or no pediatric services available.

I would love to live in a place where everyone had heath care food and housing. It hurts to see homeless people sleeping in the cold. What I have a problem with is seeing our country in so much debt that it will never be able to pay off. We live on a strict budget because we hate debt. The leader of our country love to borrow money. There seems to be no plan to pay it off but just continue to borrow more. Am I the only one that worries about debt?

I am a newbie on medicare. All the local suppliers of cpaps who accept medicare seem to be sleezy or shady. Is there any place on line that will accept medicare and actually answer questions, instead saying all the information that I am asking for, such as how to program my own machine, and does the machine come with an efficacy program is a trade secret?
