Weight Loss

Post by Proactive » Fri Aug 09, 2013 6:34 pm

Just dropped 10 lbs. With another 10 lbs no more OSA and no more CPAP monstrosity. I will sleep like a free man again. No more being chained to an uncomfortable mask (there is no such thing as a comfortable mask). No more having to lug the ball and chain around in airports.

I hope it all works out for you. I lost 72 lbs. and still suffer from sleep apnea, so there was no change for me.

Let's see your sleep study to prove it. Weight loss has about a 49% chance of "curing" OSA

Mock me all you want. I am only 20lbs overweight. In the waiting room of my local sleep clinic the average person was about 300lbs. Don't you people think that that extra fat has something to with pressing down on the throat? In fact the sleep clinic I went to has a "charitable foundation" that exploits the death of a famous athlete supposedly from OSA. He had to be at least 300lbs with a big beefy neck.

There are lots of us who were never over weight and sometimes the weight is caused by OSA.

You are just as likely to need more pressure after losing weight as you are to get off cpap. 10-20 lbs are pretty irrelevant when it comes to weight loss unless they were all around your throat.

You have a lot to learn. No different from most others when they first came to the forum.

Knowledge can empower you to do very good things for yourself.

My sister was not overweight...she is very fit. Since my brother and I have extreme sleep apnea, I told her to get tested. Guess what? She has it too...no weight loss will help her and she was more fit than you. Weight loss is always good. Just no guarantee.
Learning...brand new.

Proactive,

I wish you all the luck in the world.

Unfortunately, losing weight won't help my apnea as I was diagnosed when I was quite thin. But I always am happy for the folks who can get off of cpap losing the weight. And I assume you are taking the necessary precautions by having a sleep study to make sure the apnea is in fact gone after your weight loss.

When the weight goes, the CPAP goes too (preferably in the dumpster). If weight loss is not the answer then surgery is. I will not be hooked up to this degrading device for the rest of my life.

since you are so sure you will not need CPAP, could you possibly consider donating your CPAP machine to a needy person rather than putting it in the trash?

Perhaps. But if it goes to a severely overweight person the the cycle still continues. You CPAP lovers need to understand that this only a band aid not a cure.
