Panic Attack?

Post by pikov22 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 2:36 pm

I lay down for my nap at about 3PM today and got up abruptly about 10 minutes later, feeling like I couldn't breathe. The CPAP was functioning OK, but I had to rip it off. We called the EMT who gave me a few liters of O2 and that made me feel GREAT! So I'n going to ask my sleep doc about adding oxygen to my CPAP (how do they do that?)

Here are are some graphs.

What do you make of those???

(LATER) I see that the whole period is not there. What is the max width of an image that can be displayed here?

Again you don't show enough time on the graph. But it looks OK. At 3:00 you went for a "nap" and something caused your heart to accelerate like having an orgasm b/c at 3:05 your respiration rate of 26 was twice normal. Later it went down slowly. The Tidal Volume was correspondingly hi at 3:05 but later you took extra deep breathes at lower rate, also an indication of a sort of post sexual act. So what you actually been doing?

He said he thought he might have been having a panic attack. That comment was very rude.

pikov, It looks to me like your breathing was getting "ragged" at that period, even when it doesn't specifically qualify as a hypopnea or apnea. You were probably struggling with breathing problems that affected you at that time, even though it didn't show up that much as an apnea or hypopnea. Your brain may have panicked and you struggled enough to maintain airflow, but it still disturbed your sleep and caused stress.

You might ask your doctor to consider raising the pressure a bit if this happens very often. AHI isn't everything.

Adding O2 is fairly easy once you get the equipment. You put a little adapter between the hose and the mask, and hook up an oxygen tube to the connector. There are a few safety precautions and procedures. Then you have to deal with the tanks or an oxygen concentrator.

Hi - not a good idea at all (the 02). Whatever woke you abruptly one time can be dealt with (if it even ever happens again, but 02 is not the answer. It does not necessarily help anything if you're on Cpap and can actually interfere with its efficacy, apart from affecting your system that doesn't need it (until a doctor says it does after diagnosing ... whatever... based on testing, etc. It may feel great one time, but that's not the same as going on it routinely when you otherwise don't NEED it for a specific condition (and I don't mean the odd de-sat event). If it was such a great idea, we'd all be on it!

It happens to me as well, "I go all panic stations" and rip the mask off. I've learnt to control, by walking around in the house for about 5min. Then I get get back into bed.

Its not the best feel, in the world.

I did that. It didn't help. That's why we called EMS.

The last one I had was about two years ago and I actually went to the ER.

You can see the entire waveform by clicking the image.

"On" time for the CPAP was about 3:04:45, not 3:00.

Are you stating that the high frequency flow rate at around 3:05 is an indication of high heart rate?

Note the that Tidal Volume was "spikey" over the first 15-20 seconds.

Tidal Volume rose rapidly at 3:10:50 and stayed high until I woke up. Flow Rate frequency was also high during that period.
