Wipes - are these safe?

Post by Tigerlily » Wed May 29, 2013 5:18 pm

Someone posted that the Target brand wipes were ok to wipe down the silicone mask parts.

I think I got the right one....Up & Up sensitive skin majorly mild, alcohol free, aloe free, vit. E free, fragrance free

I went to cpap.com to look at the ingredients on their cpap wipes, but it didn't list the ingredients. Though it did say latex free...I don't know if the Target brand is latex free or not. 240 wipes for $5 is much better than 62 wipes for $12!!

Here are the ingredients on the Target wipes:
Water, propylene glycol, peg 75, lanolin, chamomile flower extract, disodium cocoamphodiacetate, polysorbate 20, citric acid, disodium phosphate, disodium edta, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate

Wow - what is half that stuff??

Does anyone know if any of this will harm the silicone? Citric acid, chamomile maybe?

I hope I can use these

I've been using them; on mask and face.
You may want to test on your arm if you suspect an allergy.
(on your face is a bad place to learn these things)
Otherwise, the silicone should be fine.

I just invest the 3-5 mins every morning to wash my mask with warm soapy water. I gave up on wipes. The Target brand did not work for my quattro mask cushion (when I used it).

What didn't you like about them? Did they leave a film?

Yes, it seemed to. My cushion was so slick it would not seal properly. Others have reported these wipes work fine. For the < $5.00 I just stopped using them since I'm washing my face to shave every day anyway, it just extends to cleaning my mask too.

A couple of years ago, I discovered baby wipes yielded at least double the usable life on my Swift FX pillows.
I still wash my silicone parts, just not as often, but I use wipes every day.
It could be our hard water.

How do you know when the pillows are done?

I have to deem them useless when the leak rate gets up into the 18-22 range or higher.
That's bad leak country for a pillow, for me.
I still give boiling in distilled water and baking soda a shot,
but it's a labor of absolute frugality I do not always consider worth the effort.

I wash everything with mild dish detergent and warm water once a week, but every day just wipe my nasal pillows down with a soft wet cloth (water only), and dry it with a soft dry cloth (another part of the same soft cloth *smile*). This seems to work well enough for me on a daily basis so that the nasal pillows have traction against the inside of my nose and don't slide around and leak. If I forget to wipe them down, which has happened once or twice *smile*, I have to get up and do it, or I get annoying leaks.

Simple, but effective...

I'm about to try out the quattro mask.... why did the wipes not work for you? What happened?

I've been using similar wipes (I use the Pampers Thick Wipes for Sensitive Skin) for 3 years and never had any problems with film or silicone break down. A few months back, someone mentioned that most of the "sensitive skin" wipes contain "aloe juice". After that thread and the fact that I have never encountered any sort of aloe film, I came to the conclusion that the aloe juice and plain ole aloe' are probably two different things. Regardless, again, I have never experienced any sort of film. I have used the cpap wipes when I can run across them, but they are a little more expensive and I have success with the pampers... so I usually stick with the pampers. I may get called in to work at odd hours, so I don't want to be washing masks in the wee hours of the morning and I try not to awaken the wife. I find that I wipe down my mask with the wipes and then I'm off chasing bad guys and gals. Less fuss ...

I also find that the wipes do not remove all of the skin oil, etc from the mask cushion.

So, I also do the soapy water thingy, but with cold water (in a plastic tub I keep on the bathtub just for that purpose). I replace that liquid soap & water solution every 2 weeks.

I remove the headgear & then separate the cushion from the mask frame.
I soak the mask frame & cushion for only a few minutes, swish them around in the soapy solution, rinse them with tap water, & place both on a small hand towel (also on the bathtub) to air dry.

Every 2 weeks, I take the mask frame & cushion even more apart & wash all of the pieces in the dishwasher on the high heat, "sani" wash cycle along with the dismantled water tub (excluding the single part with the gasket on it).

Now that warmer weather's here my face exudes more stuff all the time so I get leaks before morning no matter what I wash the cushions with. When it was colder the up and up wipes worked great, but now they won't bust the greasy slick film left behind on the cushion so I have to wash the cushion in mild dish soap and warm water. almost daily.
