ResMed S9 Green Smiley for Leaks

Post by indyredsfan » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:16 pm

Does anyone know what criteria the S9 uses for deciding to give a green smiley for leaks? I know above 24L/min is considered a large leak. Is there some percentage of the night that you must be under that threshold to get a green smiley?

With my machine, the red face only shows up if the leak is very seriously bad--kind of like the oil light on your car.
When you see it, it's time to call a tow truck or try a different mask.
Most of the masks I have rejected after only one night had dreadful numbers and red frownies.
Green smiley can be present into the low 30's leak territory, not good, but , uh, still not good.

I found that useless. I woke to that smiley green face many mornings with my old mask even though I was awakened hourly with leaks.

I tried it for the 1st few nights and it did not work for me... at my higher pressures, I found that I needed to lay down in bed to get my straps set and prevent leaks.

so I couldn't check the smiley face.

You will only see the red frowny face if you are at or above 24L/min (unintentional leak) for 30% or more of your time slept.

If I would have had a ResMed machine when I was having my massive leaks on my former FFM....I would have gotten a "mad face with the finger!"

If your machine has the leak alarm like mine does, it beeps like an instrument landing system in a plane. Very effective at waking me up to care for leaks when I have them.

No leak alarm available on the S9 Elite or AutoSet that I know of. I think only on the VPAPs like mine or the ASV model line.

Like Randy says...Mr Frowny face won't show up unless you spent 30% or more of the night in large leak territory over 24 L/min.
You might kiss 22 or 23 L/min a lot and that doesn't get counted...would still be ugly though.
To give you and example. A while back I had this bad leak that we talked about in this thread. Go look. It's a horrible looking leak report but I still didn't have enough time actually spent in large leak to earn Mr Frowny face.

Thanks. That is what I was looking for. What % of the time must you be in large leak to not get the green smiley. It sounds like you must stay under 24L/min for at least 70% to get the green smiley. That's not very useful for me. My own goal is to stay under 24L/min for the 95th percentile, so I'll just have to monitor the data and ignore Mr. Smiley. It would be great if we could adjust the % in large leak Mr. Smiley uses to change his mood. Then I could set mine to trigger if it was >5% of the night and know instantly every morning if I had made my goal.

Without getting too obsessive about it, if you look at your leak data onscreen and the 70% number is less than 24L/min, you're good.

Since the leak data is not measured by the machine on a 95th percentile, in order to get that number you will be adding up the minutes and seconds for every time you go over 24L/min and computing in function of hours slept (?) ... that's the kind of work that can make you crazy.

I don't need to do any manual calculations to get the 95th percentile leak number. ResScan calculates and reports it for me. It would just be nice to be able to check it instantly on the machine every morning. Knowing my leaks were under control 70% of the time is not very meaningful for me since I know I can and want to do much better than that. Unfortunately that is all the green smiley tells me. I'll just check my ResScan reports every few days to make sure I am keeping my leaks under control.

I have both a full face and nasal pillow mask. I never miss my leak goal when I use the full face mask, but I do some times miss it when I use the nasal pillows due to mouth breathing. I've been thinking of trying a chin strap to stop the mouth breathing. I'd be interested in hearing positive and negative reviews of various chin straps other folks have tried.

On the LCD screen...Mr Smiley is related to 70% below 24 L/min thing
BUT
The number on the LCD screen for leak is the 95% number...so that's a quick reference..if it's below 24 L/min...you don't need to look further unless you just want to.

Now sometimes that 95% number looks worse than it really is and I have a good example in this thread
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=86705&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=45
So a higher 95% number doesn't always mean that the majority of the night was total crap with leaks.
It said my 95% was 27 something but if you look at the whole night...I only had about 45 to 50 minutes where I was barely past the red line.

I was thinking that might be the case. Thanks for that up, Pugsy!

I think of the number on the display as a kind of digital "all is well" indicator.
The red light/frowny face is something I NEVER want to see.
The mask that does that goes back to the shop.
