Diet: Eat Fat!
Re: Diet: Eat Fat!
How much grams of carbohydrates are we talking about here? And no, our bodies are made to convert carbohydrates into energy as our primary energy source. Why do you think ketones need to be created by our bodies in order to convert the fat for energy use? Also when you eliminate carbohydrates, where are you getting your nutrition from when carbohydrates are loaded with them

There are many other studies done and people making claims that high fat diets are not good. Athletes report much worse progress in performance in high fat diets.
There is barely any water storage in a high fat diet which is why exercising is such a difficult task with a high fat diet.

Find the most athletic person you know and get him to eat like this. Then get him to come with some friends and me with his bicycle on a metric century ride.Janknitz wrote:
What's your source on that??? I eat very few carbohydrates and LOTS of fat. I am no more a morning person now than I have ever been, sleeping in is never a problem for me.
Our bodies only use carbs as the primary source of energy IF we eat a lot of carbs and that's what's available. Our bodies are perfectly happy to run on ketones instead of carbs and do very well without more than a very small amount of carbs.
We will watch him collapse within two hours. Meanwhile we are consuming gel packs of mostly carbs (fast digesting sugars) and a little bit of protein every half hour. At the end of the ride we are ready to party and your friend is ready for bed. Carbs are the only food that does this for us.
I've watched guys drinking protein shakes and eating nuts. They don't finish.

But those are not the norm. Most people push chairs away from a desk and their diet should reflect this. High carb and a desk job are a bad combination.Find the most athletic person you know and get him to eat like this. Re: Diet: Eat Fat!
Just remember, one size does not fit all. Many folks are much more sedentary now (desk jobs, etc.) than they were 50-60 years ago. I also think that more research is pointing to strong links between genetics and cholesterol levels in the blood.
I don't know what the answer is, but it sure is frustrating trying to be a well educated consumer when the experts seem to change their tune so often. I remember the low fat craze. Snackwell products, etc. I remember when movie theaters were all switching away from natural fatty oils. Canola oil was thought to be the healthiest, as you didn't want any of that nasty saturated stuff.
Now, Paleo seems to be all the rage.
For me, the plan seems to include moderation, watching caloric intake, and greatly increasing physical activity. 10,000 steps a day is only the start.

Totally agree John. I tried a Paleo type diet to improve health and not to lose weight for several weeks.JohnO wrote:Just remember, one size does not fit all. But I started to find that due to craving carbs big time that I was starting to eat junk food on a daily basis. It seems for me what works best is to eat a "reasonable amount" of gluten free carbs even though many Paleo fans will cringe at this. However, in my opinion, everybody's situation is different and like you said, one size does not fit all.

49er, Paleo is not low carb, and it is not ketogenic unless you choose it to be. Fruit and starchy veggies and even honey as a sweetener fit within the paleo template.

Due to fruit and starchy veggies not satisfying my carbohydrate need, I am getting an intense craving that is better suited by allowing some gluten free crackers. So while technically, it may not be low carb, it feels that way to my body.

49er, you may want to check out the perfect Health Diet by Paul and Sou Ching Jaminet (http://www.perfecthealthdiet.com). It's essentially paleo with the addition of up to 1lb of "safe" (meaning no anti-nutrients) starches per day. Safe starches include white rice, sweet potatoes, taro, plantain, and others. Sounds like it would suit you well.

Re: Diet: Eat Fat!
Well, in my case, the definition of moderation in terms of food is generally OK (although I -do- need to reduce carb intake). What I need to do is refine my definition if moderate exercise to be higher than I had been thinking.Janknitz wrote:So, moderation has been around for a long time. It's nothing new. Re: Diet: Eat Fat!
Right now the Coca Cola industry is but one example of a big corporation having its way with the "moderation" advice. People are starting to wake up to the fact that soft drinks loaded with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are a public health nightmare. As the pressure mounts, Coca Cola has mounted it's campaign to reassure us that sodas in moderation are perfectly fine in the diet.
Their feel good commercials propose that "one little soda won't hurt", followed by 45 minutes of dog walking, or playing ball with friends. The trouble is that most people who drink sodas have a problem with moderation. They are not drinking 8 oz of soda and never getting plenty of physical activity to counteract the harm to their livers and pancreas. They are drinking multiple sodas a day, in huge quantities like Big Gulps, and complaining that "nanny states" are trying to limit their consumption. It's not unlike the tobacco industry in the 70's and 80's. (Yeah, right, low tar cigarettes were going to solve the problem ).
Coca Cola is winning the fake moderation battle. I'm not at all for regulation of dietary intake (the same government that tries to regulate HFCS determines that my child can't have whole milk in school because of the fat content but permits SWEETENED chocolate and strawberry flavored skim milk with a high sugar content ), but I'm totally against the ad execs and suits on Wall Street having their way with ME and what I choose to put in my body and give to MY children.
They are very good at convincing Americans that Coke is OK in moderation and to go right ahead doing what has caused this public health crisis of epic proportions. We are totally unprepared for the tsunami of diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimers heading our way thanks to "moderation". It works about as well as abstinence from sex. Just look around at other Americans to see how well moderation is working for them.

Meanwhile long term studies in France show that One soda a week, a diet soda at that, is correlated with diabetes.Their feel good commercials propose that "one little soda won't hurt", followed by 45 minutes of dog walking, or playing ball with friends.
Plus the fact that "moderation" for Americans tends to be a huge amount for the rest of the world.

Re: Diet: Eat Fat!
How long has it been since Coke has been packed/sold by the single serving (8 ounces)?
Maybe in the 1950's, --or earlier than that?
I remember the Hested's fountain had 8 ounce glasses.
--Coke was in ONE size; and it was not glutton size.
