Wisp headgear problem

Post by SisterBenedict » Sun Mar 03, 2013 4:52 pm

Last night the snap below my right ear of my Wisp headgear came undone and would not stay attached. My mask therefore kept slipping. I think this is the fault of the snap being expected to connect to fabric rather than to another piece of plastic. Anyway, since I didn't have a spare set of headgear I used packing tape to keep it together. I have only had this setup for slightly more than two weeks.

Tomorrow first thing I will be calling my DME provider and asking them to meet with me IMMEDIATELY to provide me with another option. I don't think I'm going to get another Wisp since this seems to be a design flaw rather than an equipment failure.

I brought the damaged headgear to the DME today. She was surprised and dismayed, as after examining it, she was concerned that all of the ones she has sold recently will be coming back as returns.

She said she will be calling her sales rep to tell him about the problem, and to request a plastic (rather than fabric) headgear be sent to me directly.

She also set me up with a new Mirage XR in the meantime for me to keep.

According to my DME in ON, they had discontinued the fabric headgear b/c of issues with the snaps breaking. I tried out the silicone headgear and hated it. I tried multiple nights/times and could not get used to it.

I went back to my dependable ESON.

This new nasal mask's success will depend on the quality of the cushion's sealing for leaks. Problems with the headgear and latches could be fixed easily.
But letting the cushion sit on the nose- bridge without a forehead stop, is a real design goof.

The mask that I am using does a good job sealing for leaks with very little tension of the headgear. It has to do with the cushion's two silicone flaps :

Shouldn't that lower plasic "latch" on the Wisp work with Velcro like hooks ond loops?

Sister --

I'd love to hear your comparison of the Wisp and the Mirage FX once you've used the FX for a bit.

Both my wife and myself had the Wisp headgear and had problems with the clip breaking the fabric within 6 weeks of use. Very bad quality control, bad design and minimal testing before putting the product on the market. My old headgear ,not Philips, lasted years and years.

There is no way I would have bought the Wisp if it had a forehead stop or strap.

I fail to see the need for a forehead stop or strap. I sleep in a horizontal position and therefore see no purpose served by strapping up my forehead.

On the other hand, I have never had the Wisp slip out of position when sitting up either. It stays in place like glue whenever the pressure is turned on.

I have had great success with the Wisp. Yesterday was a month of continuous use, with the silicon straps, which I selected and find quite comfortable.

As with any mask, YMMV. But you might be pleasantly surprised, avi!

Regards, Nate

The clip on the left side of my Wisp mask starting coming undone on it's own. It seems to have worn out in 3 months of nightly usage. So I took the clips off both sides and threaded the fabric through the holes. Works fine, and in fact, feels less bulky because I sleep on my left side.
My complaint is that I haven't been able to find the right degree of tightening that will give me minimal leaks yet not leave a red mark on the bridge of my nose in the morning.

I just replaced my fabric headgear because it broke. My DME said that Phillips has started putting out new ones that address the breakage issues. While I hope it takes cares of it I still chose to go with the silicone version. It is slightly heavier but I have had no problems. I am very happy with the mask otherwise.

Well good to find you all. I shifted to the fabric wisp headgear cause the silicone one made bad indentation in my cheek and pressed on my cheekbone and hurt no matter the adjustment. Well few weeks into the fabric one (which i love) the place where the clips go in stretched out and pop undone! it is clear they designed these backwards. The slit should be first and sit into the circle not the other way around. I don't want to go back to the silicone one! I can't use nasal pillows and went thru 4 other masks to find this one that didn't hurt me! darn. Design flaw eh?

When I use the nose piece that it says to use it pinches my nose closed, the next size up leaks so bad I cant use it. I like the Mirage FX way better. What do I do with the new wisp that I cant use?

If it is touching your nostrils you are wearing it up too high. Watch the videos on their website. The bottom of the nosepiece should be resting just above your upper lip.

Ditto what Nate said..... But I have the fabric straps and really like them, no problems whatsoever. The mask does NOT sit on the nose bridge but slightly lower, Avi all masks do not need a forehead brace to be perfect. Everyone's face is different, I get zero leaks and my ahi is below 1 with my wisp .
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I can gaurentee there is a lot that went into the development of the Wisp mask. At launch we had a quality issue with the fabric frame where the headgear loops were breaking on less than 5% of the frames. We determined this was to high of a failure rate and redesigned the frame to correct the issue. The correction is on the inside of the frame so you cannot tell which frames are old and which are the new ones. I do hope you will give the Wisp another chance. We are very proud of this platform and want to do everything we can to ensure you are pleased with it.
