OH.MY.WORD - AS SIMPLE AS WARM MILK? Really??!
I usually get 15 minute or less of deep sleep. I kid you not. That's with my ahi low or high, it doesn't matter. I could have a perfect AHI night and I will still only get 15 minutes or less of deep sleep. I've talked to my sleep doc about it - and he thinks it's a type of insomnia (I had SEVERE insomnia as a child and as a teen - and had to retrain my self how to sleep) - and is willing to take a look the next time I have a sleep study to see if there is another issue involved.
So in the mean time, I try things here and there just to see if they might have an effect of sorts.
I read that a glass of red wine before bed will increase deep sleep, but will decrease REM.
So I tried a glass of wine - not only am I a cheap drunk, but my AHI skyrocketed (I know, you could'a told me that) and I had absolutely NO recorded REM or DEEP.
Won't go there again.
So last night, on a whim, just to see what it would do, I warmed up a cup milk and put a little vanilla in it. . .and drank it before bed.
I HAD 33 MINUTES OF DEEP SLEEP.
I'm floored.
Who knew.
Cows. . .be afraid. . .be very afraid. . . **wicked grin**

MOO
Something for me to add to my arsenal I suppose.
How are you measuring your deep / REM sleep?

First from my original sleep study - after I was on the cpap. From then on, it's been according to the zeo and how I feel. I found that Sleepyhead may show (from the zeo import) seconds here and there that the zeo does not show on the web site, but it still does not amount to much. It's usually never over fifteen minutes - total for the night.
My sleep doc mentioned the same when he saw my sleep study and asked if I ever dealt with insomnia. . .at that time he hoped I'd learn how to sleep once I was on the cpap for a while. . . but with the exception of last night, it hasn't. I'm hoping last night wasn't just a fluke, so I'll test it to make sure it's the milk and not just a weird night or because of some other factor.

Interesting read.. . . YES, warm milk can help you get to sleep. But it’s not because it contains the enzyme tryptophan, which urban legend has it will lull you to sleep (and which is often the talk at Thanksgiving when people drop like flies after a large meal heavy in tryptophan-rich turkey).
In fact, the jury is still out on exactly whether or not milk can encourage sleep. Studies of tryptophan’s impact on sleep have found only one phase of sleep – the first one when you’re falling asleep – is enhanced by tryptophan. Other aspects of sleep, such as the amount of deep-sleep reached during the night, can be harmed by tryptophan, especially if it’s taken in supplemental form . . .

Actually, I believe I heard it's the carbohydrates as well.
A bowl of hot cereal with milk makes me VERY drowssssy.

I can't do it, I am lactose intolerant. I made the mistake, yesterday, after walking the dog in -30C, of having some really good hot chocolate and had an upset stomach all afternoon.

Yes, that is interesting. I was wondering if it was actually the milk. . .or just that feeling of relaxing when your sipping on something wonderful. Milk doesn't make me go to sleep any better than anything else does, that I can absolutely agree with. . . but was very shocked with the deep sleep. . . which seems to evade me because I can't deeply relax in sleep - or that seems to be the case. Maybe it was just soothing enough to do just that.tattooyu wrote:Interesting read.. . . YES, warm milk can help you get to sleep. I put some sugar free vanilla syrup in it . . .no alcohol. . .hmmm.
I dunno. I think I'm going to play with it though and either rule it as a fluke or maybe as something working with something else?
I love my zeo.

Sometimes I used to eat a bowl of cereal at night if I'm looking for comfort food. I never really paid attention to whether it helped with sleep or not. It's been quite a while since I've done this since I have this weight to get rid of.chunkyfrog wrote:Actually, I believe I heard it's the carbohydrates as well.

Maybe once I lose this weight, I'll try a small bowl and see what happens.

I wonder if it was just drinking something warm and comforting? They make a wonderful coconut milk that I drink on occasion, it's vanilla flavored. . . wonder if it would work just as well all warmed comfied up?

Works like a charm for lactose intolerance. I use the generic.
(Does not work for milk allergies.)

I read else where, quite a while ago, that it was the calcium in the milk that helped with the sleep.
