Who set you up?

Post by CpapDude2012 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 8:27 am

Im curious, when you were set up with your xpap machine, who conducted your set up? Respiratory therapist? Cpap clinician?
Also, did you go to the dme office? Or did they come to your home?

For me that'd be my family dr.
who recommended me to a Respiratory Therapist in Winnipeg, MB.
They sent me home with a test machine, and then I had a follow up appointment where I got my cpap from them as well.

For me, I picked up my cpap machine from my DME on a Friday, and the RT came out on Monday to check everything and fit me for a different mask.

After learning so much on this forum, I was able to set up my husband on his own machine without any DME being involved.

I picked up my machine and mask at the DME...10 minutes of instruction...and went happily on my way. Never saw an RT.

Bought my machine privately. Set it up myself. My DME (for masks and other supplies) has never even seen any of the machines I have used.

My PAP machine was sent to my door and I set it up myself. I guess Kaiser Permanente figured that since their RT had shown me how to set-up the loaner PAP machine for my 3 day home tritration that I would be able to do it again with my new PAP machine or would call if I ran into troubles.

I set an appointment at the DME with their RT. He gave me a two choices of xpap (S9 Autoset or a System One auto) and I had a chance to try on three FFM (my preference, can't breath well through nose). He set up my choice xpap as a cpap according to Dr's prescription. He messed up in a couple areas. I was trying masks sitting up rather than laying down! It is so much easier to adjust to 15 cm H2O laying down than sitting up! He also set up my autoset to record usage only, no data... I was able to get the clinicians manual and reset the option to data and have made all my own adjustments since then (Dr has switched me to apap mode and we've tried a couple different ranges).

My DME provider sent a RT out to show me how to use the ‘brick’ they set me up on. They fit me for one mask and were on their way. They never once called to ask if I was compliant or how I was feeling. The DME however would call every couple of months to try and sell me supplies. After I quite ordering supplies I never heard from anyone again. Now seven years later I have taken on a new interest in my health/sleep. I’ve purchased a ResMed S9 Autoset on my own so that I could track the data myself using ResScan and Sleepyhead.

Do the dme's always give you a brand new machine, or are they used?

I went to the DME, a little inconvenient but I didn't' want the hassle of them not bringing the right stuff and going back and forth a few times. If they tell you going to their location isn't an option, I'd question id that's the DME you want.

After educating myself by studying up here on CPAPTalk, I bought my own machine/supplies/software and set myself up.

With xPAP therapy, do or do not; there is no try.

I got my CPAP from the respiratory therapist who works for my sleep doctor. I can get all my supplies through her too.

My DME brought my machine, a starter mask and a gallon of distilled water to my office.
