OT: Fish Oil

Post by ems » Sun Nov 18, 2012 7:35 pm

My doctor suggested that I take fish oil, two 1200 mg daily. Any suggestions as to a brand so that I'm not tasting fish all day would be very much appreciated.

I found that capsules do not have any taste...I have used several brands from CVS and Walgreens.

The cheapest and best quality according to Consumer Reports is Puritan's Price. You can go to Puritan.com to buy it. I have been using their Fish Oil Capsules for about 5 years. My Endocrinologist put me on it as the Crestor lowered my cholesterol but my Triglycerides were still too high. It does work.

I am also using Puritan fish oil due to the fact that I can't take cholesterol medication due to muscle issues that it causes. Once Apnea is under control I believe that he said we will try Pravastatin again.

Doctor Oz says the fish Oil should have a large percentage of DHA. The cheap ones do not mention the percentage of DHA. Look for the word, Enteric as well.

If you have problems with Cholesterol lowering drugs. Consider Niacin for one. Another is to take a low dose CoQ10 every day, which can often solve the muscle spasms that usually start at the top of the calf, behind the knee.

I get fish oil from Trader Joes--very highly rated in Consumer Reports and ver affordable.

There are many brands to choose from. You should ask your doctor how much epa and dha he wants you on as these are the 2 substances that they believe are the benifical supstances that you want from your fish oil. Now there is some dispute over which is better, a higher Epa to dha, or a higher dhap to epa, or one that is balanced. I wish I could give you some insight, but I am confused as to which one is better myself
If you are looking for a higher EPA I believe there is a brand called omega brite, or http://www.1800healthy.com has one too. They tend to be more expensive than your run of the mill brands, but they may have better results.
As for one that has a higher DHA to EPA, I haven't tried that yet, but am going to try it next.
I have found fish oil to be of some help wth chronic pain and with depression, definitely not a cure for me, but a helpful add on to my regimen.
A enteric coated fish oil will help with repeat also one that has peppermint or lemon oil or some other flavoring. I used Fish Smart for the longest time and it was the only one I could take, as it was enteric coated and had the pepermint oil, though it cost a lot.
One trick that seems to work, is to put your fish oil in the freezer. They won't freeze, but for some reason this seems to help when it comes to having the taste repeat on you. Sounds funny, but many people say it works, and you know, I think it does.

Mike

Ditto -- Trader Joe's was also independently tested by Consumer Lab (different from Consumer Reports) for impurities and accuracy of dose reporting and passed their tests. I usually buy that because it's one of the least expensive I've come across.

Had the same problem with the smell! One I opened smelled like low tied. Yuck. They have gotten better though. I looked at krill oil, and it looks to have lower EPA and DHA, so I'm not sure why it would be better, but my understanding is no smell, and no after taste, but it is expensive.

Sometimes what hits you first is the smell of the plastic container that a supplement comes in rather than the supplement itself. I once bought the vegetarian (algae) omega-3 supplement Ovega-3 and the smell was so vile when I opened the container that I couldn't bring myself to take the stuff.

FWIW, Trader Joe's makes a molecularly distilled version (no fishy taste) and so does Whole Foods. I've also read that keeping fish oil pills in the freezer helps get rid of both fishy smell and fishy taste.

I've been taking the Costco store brand twice a day for years. Never tasted anything, and since I'm not a fish fan, I think I would be pretty sensitive to it.
They're only 1000 mg though.

I hope that doesn't discourage everyone from trying to get healthier, but I think it's important to consider it if only for your wallet's sake.
