Women go on testosterone therapy, as well. But don't worry, I have nothing further to say on the subject. (For now.)
I know this is an old thread but I'm tired of the ignorance people have on this subject. I'm a female on testosterone therapy and I not just for "sexual reasons".
I'm on testosterone therapy, because my testosterone levels are low for a female...I'm in my 30's, and my testosterone levels are in the post menopausal range, and it causes me all of the symptoms that men with low testosterone have, only relative to other women. Relative to other women I have low muscle mass, and make almost no progress with any workout. Relative to other women, I have no ambition...or "aggressiveness" if you prefer that term, and this has made me fairly non-functional, and has caused me problems as work. Relative to other women my age, I have low bone density because
women create estrogen by converting testosterone, and relative to other women my age, I do have a low libido, in fact, too low to sustain a relationship, which not only leaves me lonely, but the man I would otherwise have a relationship with lonely.
The average bioavailable testosterone level for a woman is 7.7 ng/dL. That might not sound like much, but it's sufficient for most women because the estrogen the rest has been converted to usually picks up the slack as far as mood, bone density, and libido goes.
My bioavailable testosterone level was 0.9 ng/dL.
For comparison, that's 11.7% of the average value. That's like a man my age having a bioavailable testosterone level of 18ng/dL.
My total testosterone levels are also low, and because of this, I cannot produce enough estrogen, and am also on estrogen therapy.
Men also produce estrogen, and low estrogen levels have been indicated in some symptoms of hypogonadism in some males. Normal estradiol levels for males overlap with normal levels on the low end for females btw.
This notion that estrogen is a female hormone, and testosterone is a male hormone is a misconception that needs to go. They are both human hormones and to function at their prime, both men and women need testosterone and estrogen to be within normal range for their respective age and sex.
I don't know yet the cause of my low testosterone levels but premature ovarian failure is a concern, and I'm currently on four different hormones because I cannot maintain consistent levels and keep experiencing sudden drops which result in horrible headaches that NSAIDS wouldn't get rid of, among other things men don't like to hear about. Three of the hormones got the some of the other things men don't like to hear about under control, but I was still having the headaches until I went on the testosterone.
Testosterone is also prescribed for post menopausal women to help with bone density, etc, who cannot go on straight estrogen due to an increased cancer risk.
I hope by now, you are feeling better and have your "aggressiveness" back, and that you can better appreciate the importance of healthy hormone levels in both men and women.
