Deodorize....
We took our first trip with my APAP machine this past weekend. The hotel room had a mild air freshener sprayed in the room that wasn't all that obvious or objectionable when you walked in the room but now that I'm home the air from the machine smells like the room. Obviously I'm going to wash all the cloth pieces and I just put in a new filter. Will vinegar and water take care of the smells soaked into the hard parts that can be washed?
Thanks,
Randy
Thanks,
Randy
Re: Deodorize....
Should, plus turn you machine on for an hour or so and that should get rid of the smell. I have done that after a hotel stay plus if it continues I use a cotton ball placed as close to my intake as I can with my favorite pursleep on it....if you don't have pursleep how about your fav smell.......wifes purfume, a bar of soap, an orange segment, coffee....and the list goes on.

. . .those little scented wax bits, a sprig of fresh herb from the garden (bruised), or an incense cone (not burning)
--or even a used dryer sheet (new ones are way too strong)

Vinegar is good at getting out smells. I use it to wash my teenage boy's clothes!

Re: Deodorize....
I vote for baking soda. Teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of hot water, mix until it dissolves and sluice it around your humidifier and inside the hose, then rinse and hang up to dry and you should be good to go.

Re: Deodorize....
Thanks all for the suggestions. I gave everything a good soak with vinegar water then set them in the sun for a while. We'll see how things smell tonight.
I should mention that I'm very "scent adverse" hence the reason to get rid of the residual smells from the hotel room. Most scents tightens up my chest making it difficult to breathe. I had this unintentionally proven a while back when my pad-a-cheek liners got washed in a load that had Febreze added to it. The scent was very strong in the liners and for the few nights I tried to sleep wit them my AHI was higher. Once we washed them again I was right back down to normal.
Thanks again,
Randy

My favorite is when people drench themselves in a bottle of something like "White Diamonds." Also the scented kittie litter. YUK and YUK.

Maybe a little bag of rinsed and dried aquarium charcoal set behind the machine?

Re: Deodorize....
I had always thought they should make a charcoal filter for the machine. It'd still be small enough to get the dust but would also filter odors. My guess, though, would be that it would be too small to last longer than one or two nights.chunkyfrog wrote:Maybe a little bag of rinsed and dried aquarium charcoal set behind the machine?

Re: Deodorize....
My two biggest are anything by Scentsy and various fabric softeners/sheets. My neighbor has what I call toxic fabric softener, if we have our windows open we have to close them when she does laundry. Some are so bad I smell people when they walk in to the room before I even see them - but I seem to be over sensitive to that. I know it's a lung irritant and all that but thank God for Ozone machines.msla wrote:My favorite is when people drench themselves in a bottle of something like "White Diamonds." Re: Deodorize....
I noticed a funky "hotel" smell when I got back from Arizona not too long ago. The odor reminded me of the Bioré nose strips; the kind you use to rip out those blackheads -- fun! I've noticed that same odor in nearly all the hotels I've ever stayed in.
At home, I use a combination of distilled white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in a little water to make a weak peracetic acid, which cleans better than anything I've tried including just the vinegar by itself. Don't mix it ahead of time since the oxidation process is very quick and you will end up with water if you do that. Normally, I clean the humidifier, nasal pillows and short hose every day using an unscented dishwashing detergent. After time, I notice a cloudiness and slight fruity odor (aspergillus?) building up in the mask parts and humidifier tank. After a 20 minute soak and good rinse, the hose and humidifier are crystal clean with zero odor.
Hope that helps!

At the Doctor's office, I rip out the scented "scratch and sniff" advertisements and throw them out so I can read a magazine.

Re: Deodorize....
Yup. That bothers me as well. Usually gives me a headache the next morning. The idea of letting it run for a while without it on is one that I've used in the past as well as washing it (and changing the filters). I find that after a couple days at home I don't notice the smell anymore.Randyp1234 wrote:...
