Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Oh, and it happens at all settings. Mine are 14 over 7. I've tried it with EPR off and the sound is there. I've tried it with EPR at x1 and x3 ... it's still there. It's there at the lowest setting of 7 when I first start it up at night. It's also there at the night, in the morning when I get up to shut it off and the pressure it a bit higher. And I've heard it during the night at higher pressures when I wake up too. Always, but only with deeper exhalations or what you would call normal exhalations. Not with shallow exhales.
I do agree that some machines have the sound and some don't, because I experienced none from the trial machine which was exactly the same machine, but have it with the brand new one I brought home.
I must start to think of it as my little owl friend too ... LOL. However what irks me is, this thing cost a LOT of money. I did not expect to be buying a pet too.

Well at least we don't have to feed it or have it snore in our ears or walk on our belly and wake us up.ReadyforRest wrote:I must start to think of it as my little owl friend too ... LOL. However what irks me is, this thing cost a LOT of money. I did not expect to be buying a pet too.
I had a chance to trial someone else's S9 VPAP ( loved it and that's why I bought my VPAP) before I bought mine in Feb of this year. I don't remember hearing anything at all with it but I can't swear it wasn't producing the sound because the sound is rather difficult for me to hear anyway. I didn't know to listen for it.
I have had the chance to use or try probably 6 different machines but only the 2 ResMeds and really the only noise I ever heard was my on inhale and exhale noise and I know that is "in my head" because when I plug up my ears I still hear it and even at the same noise level. It doesn't reduce. Now some masks will give me louder inhale and exhale noise than other masks.
My husband says that they have all been almost silent on his end of things. He can't hear the inhale or exhale at all. So no Darth Vader sounds for him. He says he often wakes in the night and things are so quiet that he has to put his hand in front of my face to feel the venting to know that the machine is on. He used to poke me in the side and wake me up to tell me to put my mask on.....only to be told "it is on".. At least he now just feels for the venting instead of waking me up.
When I have had both the Respironics machine and the ResMed machine laying on the bed and asked him to try to hear the machine noise with me masked up he says that he has to really "strain" to hear either one and that is with him within one foot of the machines.

No sound on mine. It's so quiet that i often end up feeling for the air outtake to check if on.

I have it. It bothers me, but only when I'm trying to fall asleep. As far as I know, I don't have EPR enabled. I stick an earplug in the ear that's not on my pillow, and then by the time I'm asleep, the pressure has increased such that it's louder than the coo.

Any more, the only sound in that room that bothers me is the #$%@& alarm clock!

I like the noise coming out from my S9 Autoset machine in APAP mode. It's telling me that the air flow blower inside is doing its job. Think about it how this blower needs change its speed according to your respiration demands from it. I also hear human voices coming out for the machine. Is it possible that it picks the voices from the telephone which is nearby
Low radiated noise
Flow generators typically produce “radiated noise”
which emits through the casing and inlet of the
device and out to the surface it’s resting upon. But
with its remarkably low radiated noise level, the S9
Series device is no louder than normal breathing—
which is great news for you and your bed partner.
Low conducted noise
The noise that circulates from the fl ow generator through
the breathing tube and into your mask is called “conducted
noise.” S9 devices produce conducted noise levels that are
78% less than all ResMed S8™ II models, which results in
less vibration through the cheekbones, better comfort and
lower noise at the mask.

I've had the machine 4 days and it chirps. Got to be a fix. Driving my wife crazy.
Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
If the OP of this thread is still interested, my S9 started the 'whistle-on-exhale' business about three days ago. I'm glad this thread was easily accessible because I was about to start experimenting with mask, hose, etc., likely in vain. I'd describe it as a faint, medium-pitched whistle. I hear it in my right ear and my S9 is situated to my right. Makes sense it's this infamous "bird sound." I was using my machine for five months before it started.

Being hard of hearing has it advantages sometimes. When I take both my hearing aids out at night everything is nice and quite. Mine doesn't make a sound though but if it did I wouldn't hear it. My wife where 's two hearing aids also so she wouldn't hear it either.

I understand that some people are simply more sensitive to noise--at any volume.
If all S9's are the same (which I doubt), then these people may need to get more serious about sound isolation.
As it is, the S9's are probably the quietest machines around.
I, for one am just fine with it.

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Yes, I hear that too. I have hearing loss in one ear due to multiple surgeries. If I lie on one side I hear nothing. On the nights I have trouble dozing off, I roll over and listen to the timed "pshhhh" sound. I find it kind of soothing...lol.Pugsy wrote:I use a ResMed S9 VPAP. I do faintly hear a machine noise of some sort on exhale. It is so faint that I have to noticeably focus on listening for it. I did this when you first starting raising the question of noise from the machine. Definitely not mask venting noise. My husband reports that he also has to really "strain" to hear any machine noise. He says that for the most part the only thing he ever hears if he wakes in the night is mask venting noise and that is very minimal. He has been known to put his hand over my face to feel for mask or venting air to confirm that the machine is even on. He says that the machine is that quiet.
He reports that some nights he hears some venting and some nights he doesn't. He may be hearing some venting bouncing off the bed covers. I don't know since I am asleep.
It is a machine and machines do produce some noise. I think that some people may be more sensitive to some sounds and tones than others. I have had my hearing checked and it is entirely normal.
The sound I hear can't be described as a bird chip by any means. It is hard to put into words because it is so faint. It certainly does not cause me to lose any sleep but it might someone else.
Bilevel machines are noted to be a bit "noisier"..it is the nature of what they do with the changing of pressures. I have never used a S9 Autoset. I have used the VPAP in straight cpap mode. Again minimal noise on exhale. Prior to the VPAP I have used a PR S1 APAP....again mainly mask venting noise is all I have ever heard but if I strain and focus long enough...I can hear machine noise.

Mine is less than a week old and it has had it since the first night. I hear it when I am awake, but when I'm asleep I don't hear a thing
