Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead/OSCAR

Here's the operating procedure I use for my "Old Style" CMS-50F, with white case, (NOT the "New Style," blue case model which is now compatible with SleepyHead) and a link to separate instructions for CMS-50D+ users. For the benefit of xpap new-comers who use PC computers and especially those fairly new to computers, the steps below include more detail than advanced users are accustomed to seeing. The goal is to help Contec CMS-50E and CMS-50F Pulse-Oximeter users acquire reliable daily access to their Pulse-Ox graphs in SleepyHead software time synchronized with the standard SH graphs.
If you have a CMS-50D+, please go to Burkebang's 'Norwegian' solution at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=84205&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... 15#p763813
If you continue to have issues obtaining your Pulse-Ox graphs in SleepyHead, others in the forum may provide further help if you start a new thread or you can send me a PM to discuss what may be a new issue to me.
If difficulties persist after using these instructions with your PC, go to 'Manuals/Downloads' at http://www.pulseoxstore.com/Manuals-Downloads.html to download and reinstall the latest SpO2 Review software for your specific Pulse-Ox firmware version and your computer's specific Operating system.
CMS-50E/F Pulse-Oximeter operating procedure
A. Record your Pulse-Ox data over night
1. Be sure the current time in both your pulse-ox and your xpap machine are set to the same time and check that am/pm are correct and the same. Aim to set the two current time settings within a few seconds of each other if not exactly the same.
2. After readying your pulse-ox and masking up at night, turn ON both your pulse-ox and xpap machine at the same time (or within a few seconds of each other) so all SleepyHead and pulse-ox data and graphs will cover the same full sleep time period.
3. Select Record in the main menu and turn Record to ON. Leave it on all night including during bathroom breaks and longer breaks.
4. Insert a finger into the sensor and sleep with it all night. Switch fingers every few nights if one gets sore. (I actually made a very tiny slit in the rubber finger grip to lessen its squeeze. See other forum threads.)
5. Turn Record OFF when you awaken in the morning.
B. Import your XPAP data to Sleepyhead
1. If you use SleepyHead software, remove the SD Memory Card from your xpap machine and insert it into the SD card reader on your computer.
2. Open SleepyHead and click ‘Import’ to upload the xpap sleep session data from your SD card.
3. Click ‘My Computer’ at upper left on your desktop screen, right click on the drive containing the SD card, click ‘Eject’ and remove the card.
4. Return the SD card to your xpap machine and reinstall it to capture tonight's sleep data.
C. Upload and view your Pulse-Ox data using SpO2 Review software
1. Turn 'USB' to ON on the Pulse-Ox and connect it to a USB computer port using the provided cable.
2. Click the 'Green Heart' icon on your computer desktop to open SpO2 Review software.
3. Click the 'Magnifying Glass' icon/"Not Active" button on the bottom line to open a New Session.
(Click ‘Cancel’ and repeat this Step if the ‘New Session’ button on top line is not shown as selected. If necessary, restart your computer and return to Step 2.)
4. Enter a file name for last night's sleep. I use a special date format to more clearly label last night's sleep and avoid date confusion; e.g., MM-dd.dd-YY, for last night/this morning's (dates) sleep data. Then click OK. A message, "Device Connected: waiting for data…" should be displayed. (If you see a message, "Can’t open COM #", click OK, disconnect the USB cable from the Pulse-Ox, then reconnect it and go back to Step 3. If necessary, restart your computer and return to Step 3.)
5. If Record is ON, turn Record OFF on the Pulse-Ox.
6. Turn Upload ON on the Pulse-Ox.
7. Wait (up to a minute) while ‘Receiving data, Please wait….’ is displayed.
8. View the Pulse-Ox graphs. Click ‘M’ on bottom line and set the Time scale by checking "All Data". Click OK.
D. View the Pulse-Ox Reports and Graphs in the SpO2 Review CMS-50 software
9. Click the Printer icon button in the lower far right corner to select your pulse-ox Report Print Settings, select a report (e.g.,'OxiMetry Report'), and click ‘Preview’. For easier viewing change the ‘%‘ button to 100% or higher (right-most button at top of screen). View the graphs and data and, if needed, click the Print button on the left top line to save a hardcopy for your doctor or your hardcopy file.
10. Press and hold 'Power off' to turn OFF the Pulse-Ox (“Bye Bye!”).
11. Recharge the Pulse-Ox by either leaving it connected to your powered up computer or using the supplied Charger plugged into a standard electric wall outlet. It works with both 120 and 240 volts ac power.
E. View the Pulse Ox Reports and Graphs in SleepyHead
1. Open SleepyHead and click the 'Oximetry' tab on the right sidebar or under the View menu at top. Disregard the "No Oximetry Data" subtitle. Click the ‘Open .spo/R File’ button in the lower right. (If your newly created oximetry data file does not show up in a list of one or more files, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SpO2\Data.) Select an oximetry data file by clicking the sleep file for the date you want to view and click ‘Open’. You should now see your red Pulse Rate and blue SpO2 oximetry graphs vs. clock time.
2. Click the Save icon button just left of ‘Open .spo/R File’ button and confirm ‘Yes’ that you want to save the data.
3. Now click ‘Data’ on the very top main menu line, then click ‘Rebuild Oximetry Indices’.
4. Exit out and restart SleepyHead. Click the 'Daily' tab to view the Pulse Rate and SpO2 Oximetry graphs aligned in SleepyHead's time scale. They are at the bottom of the stack and each can be moved up by hovering your pointer directly over the graph heading (left-side); then press and hold the left mouse button and drag the graph up to your prefered position in the stack.
5. After you click the 'Daily' tab, you can click on any red dates to see Pulse-Ox charts for your sleep on those dates in tandem with the standard graphs.
F. Flipping the Display
If you want to invert the display screen, click the main control button on the face of the Pulse-Ox. The date, time and day will be displayed. Now click the main control button twice more to invert the view.
Notes: All the steps above need to be performed to see pulse-ox graphs and data for a selected date in SleepyHead. If the clock time setting on the Pulse-Ox and on your xpap machine do not match closely enough, you will see an alert that the pulse-ox data cannot be linked with SleepyHead. Re-sychronize the current time on the Pulse-Ox so it's the same as the time on your xpap machine. Also Note that fractured sleep sessions in SleepyHead are listed in the lower left and each can be toggled ON and OFF. User comments and suggestions are always welcome to update these instructions.

Re: How to get the CMS-50 Pulse-Ox to Work
Papit, thanks for your detailed procedure.
I would suggest moving step B5 to A4, because you want to stop recording as soon as you wake up.

FWIW, my CMS-50 stopped working; computer would not recognize the unit. After downloading the latest software for pulseoxstore.com and reinstalling, my unit now works fine.

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
Papit,
I finally found the bug area for sleepytime and so I am updating this now.
The current version of CMS50 (we have CMS50FW bluetooth and love it, but another person reported this with a CMS50E) uses spo2 assistant and creates files ending with spo2. These can't be read by sleepytime (not mac, not windows, not if you change the file to end in spo or spoR). This bug has been reported for a long time (9 months?) but is not fixed yet.
So no sleeptime for me, I will look for another software.
FYI, I tried V 0.9.1 and 0.9.3.

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
Hi CpapWife. Refer back to the instruction sheet (see my signature line). Notice that you will be using the "Green Heart" SpO2 Review software, not the 'Assistant' software. Just open the SPO2 Review software at the right time in the sequence. SleepyHead versions 0.9.1, 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 have all shown themselves to be compatible with SpO2 Review. The trick is to follow the instruction set precisely or it's easy to run into time-consuming snags.
You have the Bluetooth FW connection model (I don't). Be sure your connection is paired properly. If a USB cable can alternatively be used, I would try that first and Bluetooth later just to eliminate Bluetooth from a potential cause of the difficulty you're having.

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
OK, so after a bunch more mucking....
The confusing part is at the link - Instruction Manual for SPO2 Review Software, the only green heart is a manual (yup, I clicked on all the spots close by the green heart). So I looked above there - the Red hearts that were SPO2 review software. OK, I did this 4 times and all of a sudden it worked, so I won't swear what I did that made it work the last time (I thought I was doing the same thing). I picked the red heart for my machine (windows 7 64 bit). It installed both a red heart and a green heart icon on the desktop. I clicked on the green heart icon (I am not sure a green heart installed the first 2 times, I only saw the red heart).
Now to the watch.
There is a mini usb in the oximeter, but it is for charging.
There is no choice for usb on/off in the oximeter.
After many tries, with wireless being on, plugging the usb cord in, downloading software again, etc. all of a sudden the program detected the oximeter but it is waiting for data (for a long time).
OK, more mucking and reading the instructions again...
When I have the oximeter usb connected to the computer and wireless on and I start the green heart program it says oximeter detected but hangs waiting for data. If the oximeter is not connected by usb to the computer it never detects the oximeter. I waited for data for about 3x longer than it takes to transmit the data to SPO2 Assistant (I could ignore it and let it sit for 30 minutes, just in case it is really slow).
Note, I have the choice to open a data file, but the same thing happens as with sleepytime, it looks for *.spo or *.spor,if I choose all files it will pick up a *.spo2 file and open it but there is no data.
I went to sleepyhead to see if following the same instructions - oximeter connected with usb and wireless on and then open sleepyhead gave me something the serial import button and start live button (which are greyed out if I didn't have the oximeter connected to the computer with usb before starting sleepyhead). However, clicking on the Serial Import button give me the error: Oximeter Error!!! Please make sure your oximeter is switched on and in the right mode to transmit data.
This all worked the same if wirelesss was on or off.
So still no solution, but better info. Maybe I need to ask the company - they were great about ordering it, to see if I can get the green heart program working with this oximeter.
I should add to make it clear, I connect quickly to the spo2 assistant with wireless and no usb cable.

Nope, trying to connect the CMS550fw before recording was turned off - same results.
Let it sit for 30 minutes, data never got into sleepyhead.
I will check with the company, as getting the CMS550fw with SP02 Review. I think that is the same problem sleepyhead is having.

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
I posted this before and I guess it got removed but at least with my CMS 50D+ (PLUS) after you awake in the morning do NOT turn off the recording feature. You can remove your finger but do NOT turn record off (or you will lose your data) Open the green SPO2 icon (SpO2 review) and connect your data cord to the computer and to the device. an icon on the bottom of the page that kind of looks like cogs will appear click on that and put in the requested information (if there's anything you want to input then click ok then it will have a red message in the middle saying it's ready to receive data THEN you can go to your device and turn off the record that's when the data starts loading. if you turn off the record before then it will dump the data and you will lose it. the only trouble i'm having is that the data for the oximeter pops into the previous days SH when I try to load it-- I haven't figured out how to go into the correct day. (an example I down load data this morning from my machine into SH and when I try to load the oximeter data it pops into Thursday nights data (it always goes to the day before) now maybe i'm doing something wrong but if I try to download the data any other way such as turning off the recording feature before I download it into SpO2 I loose all the data)

CpapWife, see my responses inserted in blue in exerpts of your post.
( I say again, you should be working with the SpO2 Review software, NOT the Spo2 Assistant. If you give me the link to your User Guide, I'll verify that for you. I'll also check for you whether a miniUSB cable should additionally work for you, but it sounds like your wireless connection is now doing the job. Hang in there. You're getting closer now. We'll get it straightened out. )CpapWife wrote:OK, so after a bunch more mucking....
There is a mini usb in the oximeter, but it is for charging. ( In my CMS-50F the mini/USB cable is for pulse-ox data transfer and alternatively for charging it battery. It's not just for charging. I don't have your CMS-50FW, so please scan and send me a PM of it so I can better back you up or send me a link to it.)
There is no choice for usb on/off in the oximeter. ( There sure is on my unit. )
After many tries, with wireless being on, plugging the usb cord in, downloading software again, etc. all of a sudden the program detected the oximeter but it is waiting for data (for a long time). ( Reboot and try it again. Follow my instruction sheet explicitly. I've already done the hours of 'mucking' and the sheet should spare you the same frustrations unless the model FW is really that different from the model F. )
OK, more mucking and reading the instructions again... Are you trying to decipher the Chinese guy's sheet? I'm sure he tried hard but don't think English is his first landguage.
When I have the oximeter usb connected to the computer and wireless on and I start the green heart program it says oximeter detected but hangs waiting for data. ( Good! The next step (see the instruction sheet) is to turn Upload to ON on your pulse-ox. Then the transfer of your pulse-ox data into the SpO2 Review software begins and can take up to a minute or so. See my instructions C.5, 6, 7 and 8. Oh, btw, it sounds like you are trying to do the data upload/transfer both wirelessly and by miniUSB cable. One or the other should do. If it works for you wirelessly, great. )
If the oximeter is not connected by usb to the computer it never detects the oximeter. I waited for data for about 3x longer than it takes to transmit the data to SPO2 Assistant (I could ignore it and let it sit for 30 minutes, just in case it is really slow).
I should add to make it clear, I connect quickly to the spo2 assistant with wireless and no usb cable.

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
See my C.4 instruction note as to how I avoid dating confusion. I know the feeling on that one! For me, it makes no difference whether or not I turn Record to Off when I wake up in the morning. My data certainly is not lost (so long as I don't try to record more than 24 hours of sleep).
Also, the data does not start uploading from my pulse-ox into the SpO2 Review software until I turn Upload to ON, instruction note C.7, on the pulse-ox. Send me a link to your User Guide and I'll verify that for you. (I have the model CMS 50F, not the 50D+.)

Papit If I get this correctly you can name the file what ever? Not necessarily what name the SpO2 names it???

Re: Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead (rev3-2013)
Papit - no upload anywhere. Saw that on a 50f manual, not in my 50fw manual or my 50fw screen.
I asked for an online copy to be emailed to me (China not online right now).
Or I will scan it but later this week.
But the bluetooth one works differently. So no upload choice, no usb choice, and looks like no upload thru the usb cable - believe me I have gone thru it 3 times with a fine tooth comb (ok, no comb, just my usual detailed oriented and analytical viewpoint).
And yup, the instructions I was looking at was yours, not the very amusing to read cms50fw manual.
