well, I am one of those engineer-types, and I did wonder about the separately powered heated hoses being a potential shock hazard... Are they ALL low voltage? I know water pipe tape for freeze protection is line voltage and roughly equate the pipe tape to a heated hose.

If I recall correctly, the purpose-built separate heated hoses you can buy are low voltage. The people with reptile heaters, though, run at 120VAC (or whatever is appropriate for their locale) unless a rheostat was added to the mix (based off of the reptile cables I saw).

While running on low voltage is good, it's also very important that there is good isolation between the hose voltage and the AC voltage.
