Sounds like a wise move, Yardbird. Don't know how much QEMU has improved since I last played with it. From a cost-benefit analysis, you will be much better off spending your time on the bathroom project. .

If you go to vmware's website you can download a trial copy. I think the trial version is good for a month before it expires. Then when you are sure it is working for you, you can enter in a license number that you either purchase from vmware, or get one at your work.

I'm almost wondering if I get the trial version and create a VM with a WinXP guest OS... will it disable the VM at the end of Workstation's trial period?
If not then I can download the trial, install a VM, and then uninstall Workstation and just run the VM using the free VMware Player.

from the VMWare support forums...
If you install VMware Workstation trial version, use it to create a VM with a WinXP guest OS, when the Workstation trial version expires, the VM will be intact. You can then run the VM using the free VMware Player.
So basically... I should be able to do this for free. I could also use the 30-day trial of Workstation to see if it'd be worth spending $100 on (the academic pricing) and if not... just get VMware Player for free and use that.
ALSO... can ya tell things are a bit slow at work today?.... There are a few VMX Builders out there and it looks like you could conceivably build a .vmx file without Workstation and just use Player to run it. Player has a lot less overhead.

Hmmm
I wonder if that would run on Linux running on a Conectix VPC running on Win XP
(unlikely, AFAIK one can't install a vm on a vm - but having said that I bet someone here has done it )
I am impressed that it all ran so smoothly. VMWare is an impressive product as is Connectix VPC (now owned by Microsoft).
We use both at work - I was using VPC on XP to demo a new version of OS/2 that is available called eCommStation. Worked well. eCommStation supports Apache, Firefox, full tcp/ip stack etc: etc:.

Encore Pro installed, card reader working first data download complete. It's starting the database over but that's fine with me. This is just SO excellent. Now I have to install MyEncore.

Yardbird, how is the speed? Is it sluggish or fast? Everything but the download of the data is fast for me.

One more thing Yardbird, explore the snapshot feature. I usually set up my vmware image exactly the way I want it. Then I take a snapshot, and in case it becomes corrupt, or I mess it up with another install, I can just go back to the snapshot, and in seconds I am back to my perfect image. I love it.

the data download didn't really seem any different from when I downloaded data in a NON-VM windows session. It seems fine to me. Absolutely useable.
This is great. Now... if I can program my universal REMOTE in this VM-WinXP... then I won't need that old windowsXP drive and I can format it and install it permanently as a linux storage drive
WOOT!
looking for latest MyEncore version now...

OK. This is working wonderfully. Now I don't have to swap out drives to boot to WinXP. I used the snapshot tool after I got the WinXP VM all set up, activated, and updated. With EncorePro and MyEncore installed. And Firefox.... can't have IE even on a VM.
And, NightHawkEye.. if you're yearning for a linux desktop again, I STRONGLY suggest you check out Ubuntu. I've tried linux as a primary desktop way back when I first compiled a slackware kernel on a 386. I just could not find a linux version that didn't require cryptic commands and an almost arcane knowledge of magic and spells. Ubuntu is easy and it's a full featured linux.
I have OpenOffice for my word processing, spreadsheet, etc (free), my operating system is free, I use The Gimp instead of photoshop (free), K3D or Gnomebaker for burning CDs (free), Bluefish editor for coding, you name it... and it's all free. No big-dollar Microsoft stuff any more. And did I mention it's all free?
Ubuntu is financed by the guy that used to own Thawte (and sold it to Verisign) so it's got a financially backed development team. And it's based on Debian which is probably one of the most stable of the linux versions.
*steps down off soapbox* ... and.... it's all free!
It's so free they'll send you CDs of teh Live version (a bootable CD that allows you to test Ubuntu on your machine with no changes to hard drive at all) and the install CD... FREE. Free CDs, free shipping, and you can order them like 10 at a time. Takes a few weeks to get them but ... FREE!

You guys beat me to the punch! This is something I was actually going to try when I got back from a business trip. I run SUSE and Ubuntu linux and have 2 macs. I keep a dual boot laptop that has windows for when I really need it. What flavors of linux are you guys using? Thanks for the data. I am going to set it up on mine. Also may try Virtual PC on the mac.
My best to all!

I'm using Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger), and VMWare Workstation 5.5.1.
And I'm so stoked that this is working so well I feel almost giddy.
AND... I only allocated 5 gigs to this WinXP VM and when I check teh virtual hard disk with it running, there's still over 3 gigs free and that's with everything installed, updated, and configured. I couldn't be happier.
