I think this advice is meant either for people who are untreated or people who can't tolerate a high enough pressure to stop the apneas. With the right pressure there is no reason not to sleep on your back if that's what you find comfortable.

A heated hose will warm the air, and for me it warms it noticeably. I use the humidifier on one or zero (passover mode). There is a HUGE difference in the temperature of the air when I have my Aussie heated hose plugged in and when I don't, regardless of how my humidifier is set. Occasionally I have not plugged it in and have awakened in the middle of the night with a freezing nose! I plug the hose in and that takes care of the freezing nose. I bought the heated hose to heat the air, not for rainout, and it's been perfect for that problem for me. (Having the humidifier turned on, regardless of how high, doesn't noticeably change the air temp for me; only the Aussie heated hose does that.)

I hope you're able to get the machine you need, one way or the other. Doctors can be a pain sometimes.

I was out camping last week and the first night out I woke about 3am with a freezing nose it was about 40 degrees f outside , got up and turned on my heated hose and within a few minutes..... ahhhhhhh...slept peacefully the rest of the week.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

The heated hose does not seem to make much difference, except when I take it off in the morning.
In winter, when the bedroom air is cold, the ambient chilliness is noticeable, but only for a few seconds.
