Cpap burning smell/leaking also

Post by DisneyFan » Fri Jun 03, 2011 10:53 am

Hi everyone,
I just started re-using my cpap again(I know, I've been a bad girl ) I've had the same cpap since December of 2008 and honestly I've only used it a few times. I could never get a good facial mask that I felt comfortable with.

Anyways, I started using it the other night and noticed a burnt smell, I cleaned everything and changed the filter. Tried both my nasal pillows and then the full mask, it smelled worst with the mask and I felt water on my face. When I removed the hose, water was coming out of it and the water level had lowered dramatically on the humidifier.

Should I have it serviced?

I think so

Check the hose for water by removing it. Either turn the humidifier down by half from where it is set or leave it OFF.

Could the smell be coming from something near the air intake?

Many M series machines' humidifiers were -- a leaky mess. Respironics had to redesign them not just once, but twice after introducing them.

Water from the humidifier may have gotten into your machine.

Take a look at the pictures of the original humidifier water chamber, the first re-design, and the second (staggered J tubes) re-design:

Here's an interesting old discussion about two newer versions of the water chamber that Respironics came out with after the original M humidifier:

Pictures of all three water chamber designs are here:

The newest version... the "staggered" or "J tube" chamber design ... apparently doesn't fit the original M humidifier itself. That J tube water chamber goes with a newer design of the humidifier itself.

If you have one of the earlier ones.....

Sounds to me like you have the humidifier setting way too high. It sounds like you're getting "rainout" (water in your face and in the hose). Try turning the humidifier setting down or off and see if that helps things.

The "smell" could possibly be from it not being used for a long time. You also don't want to run your humidifier tank dry or it will (supposedly) smell like that, too.

Yea, if the humidifier was run high & dry the smell could be in the plastic. Try cleaning the humidifier and doing a final rinse with a scented mouthwash, if you have one.
