Bridge of nose bruised

Post by Sleeping in Seattle » Sun May 22, 2011 5:38 pm

Any solutions you've found for bridge of nose bruising associated with a new mask? The nasal mask fits well and seals well and I've loosened it as much as I can, basically to the point of losing the seal but I'm still getting red spots/bruising on the bridge of my nose in the morning that last throughout the day. The mask got 4.5 stars from hundreds of reviewers on the most popular cpap merchant site and is the current "most-popular" nasal mask on that site. I know there is an option to "custom fit" the mask with boiling water. Have any of you had to resort to that for something other than a seal problem? Could there be an easier low-tech solution that someone could share? Thanks in advance.

I use the Swift FX and haven't had that problem. What mask are you using?

I put a strip of 3M Medipore tape over my nose bridge AND use liners from http://www.padacheeks.com. Sometimes I still feel a bruise that lasts all day, but it's a whole lot better than the red blistery bruises that I used to get.

Every time I switch to a new cushion, my mask wants to give me a nose blister.
I found that a little round Curad fabric spot bandage protects my nose for the first night or two until the cushion is broken in.
One day I forgot to remove the spot until half way through my work day.
It still beats a sore nose.

This nose problem and aerophagia are about the only negatives I've experienced with CPAP. I had some bandages on hand that I've been cutting down and using at the bridge of my nose, as well as having made some with some gauze pads and some fabric tape....but I don't use a nose protector every night...I'm on my second mask cushion, and I agree that when new they're more apt to be problematic...

When I first started cpap therapy, my nose blisters were so bad, I woke up with blood on my pillow and face. I am from native american ancestry, so I have a knot nose. I couldn't get the mask to seal under my eyes. As you can see my mask below, I switched to a total face mask. No more nose blisters on my bridge or inside (using nose pillows).

I don't know if you can get these in the US but ......... I use a little felt shape that looks like a ring donut as a buffer between the mask and the sore spot. In Europe they are manufactured by Scholl who make footwear as corn pads. In the daytime, I'd recommend you keep the area well moisturised, but make sure that it is clean and dry when you apply this pad before putting your mask on.

I've had a ton of good luck with the silicone nose-bridge guards. They're not cheap (about (US)$25 each), but do last at least one month. Clean them they same way you clean your mask each day.

While I still have a bit of redness on my nose bridge, the actual wound has healed and not reappeared since using them (2 months now).

Our hosts sell one, but you can get them on Amazon too.

Not really limited to one ancestry. Us Italian/Jew mixes often have them from either or both sides of the family =)

Is it the most popular nasal mask out there. I'm sure many here are using it as well.

You may want to play around with it a little while you are awake. It would be best if you had someone else look you over while you are playing. There is a very fine line between having enough tension to get a good seal and too much that irritates your skin. While you are awake you should become aware of excess pressure before it damages your nose. You can then make a small adjustment. Once you get a good adjustment, then you can hook up and see if that still allows you to seal.
