ResScan is shutting down...

Post by Breathe Jimbo » Sun Apr 10, 2011 6:07 pm

ResScan often hangs on exit. Still happens with 3.14. Has anyone figured out how to make this not happen?

I find ResScan slow to close and exit but haven't had a problem w/it "hanging". Of course, I haven't updated past 3.10 yet. It just hasn't seemed worth the hassle. What's new between 3.10 and 3.14, anything worthwhile or noticeable??

Not sure what exactly is new, but I assume the bleeding edge includes some bug fixes.

Is it Resscan, or CRWS.exe or devicescan2.exe, that is hanging? I find that after downloading data into Resscan one of those two other programs will not close on its own. There is a way to make them close but I don't know right off hand how to do it. I use to have to do it for some other program years ago and I've been thinking I ought to find that answer again. It is irritating.

The program hangs at the "ResScan is shutting down..." window. The CRWS icon is usually, if not always, in my taskbar at the time. Whatever the cause, I need to stop ResScan in the Task Manager to close the program. ResScan is the only program listed on the program tab at the time.

According to Problem Reports and Solutions, it appears that the problem is the ResWare Shell Launcher, but that may be only what I am shutting down, rather than the cause of the problem. These are the details provided by PR&S:

The only two things I can think of would be complete clean reinstall of Resscan and run the repair for all windows dlls. If you're using XP it's the SFC command. Can't tell you off the top of my head how to use it, but a search at Microsoft will give you all the instructions you need. SFC may work with Vista & Win 7, I don't know.

Breathe Jimbo,
As I suggested in our PM discussion, some of us have found 3.12 more stable than 3.13. Perhaps the same may hold true for 3.14. I'm curious if anyone else has had this experience with 3.14. I have not.

I've had this problem with the last few versions of ResScan. On a hunch, I tried using a different card reader. ResScan has not yet hung and is closing faster, without leaving the CRWS icon in the taskbar. However, I have not yet added new data since switching card readers. I should have a better sense in a few days whether the problem is due to a flakey card reader.

Very well could be. I've got a card reader that causes no problems except when I have Lotus 1-2-3 open and it wants to automatically save a new unsaved file. It comes up with some oddball msg and I just click on continue and all is OK. Only happens if the card reader is plugged in even with no card in the reader.

No hangs since I started using a different card reader. Therefore, the problem seems to have been caused by the flakey card reader that I stopped using. The one that I got from our host is working perfectly. More expensive, but reliable.

Card readers do wear out, too. I'm glad the new reader was the fix.

As I try to figure out the report printing problem, I now get hangs all the time. The CRWS icon remains in my toolbar even after I use the Task Manager to end the ResScan program. After shutting the program, I still see processes for crws.exe and devicescan2.exe.

Reboot.

Stopping crws.exe and devicescan2.exe in the Task Manager also works.

Hi Folks,

I also found that replacing the card reader instantly fixed the problem of ResScan (v3.14) hanging/going very slowly when shutting down. It even works fine on an external USB hub.
