OT Historic Snow in Atlanta! Day 5 Update

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN

Welcome to my world, Minnesota. We have had at least some snow everyday since Christmas, close to 50" so far this year and our snowiest months of February and March haven't arrived yet. Earlier this year a 2" snow was an "event" now it's called light flurries. Drive safe everyone, remember that 4WD does NOT help you stop faster.

It might be boring to you and something you and others deal with daily in winter but for us here in the South, it's rare and this snow stands out amongst the other snows I've been in here. The roving new crews interviewed someone from NYC who said that small companies just hired a contractor to come in and clear out the ice and snow...just doesn't exist here.

The threat of losing power is real and something all of us apneics need to deal with.

Geez, 6" here is a "dusting".

9 plows.....The village that we live in has 10 and our population is 9,000. And that isn't counting all of the state, county, or town trucks. And here, every truck has a plow.

You can keep it all. I am starting to like seeing the grass in January. Rarely does that ever happen. Normally by this time, it is buried by 12-20" of snow. Reminds me of the blizzard that hit here in '94. The area I was in had drifts of 8-13 feet. I have a video of a plow truck that went around the bend in the road and buried itself completely in a drift. It took a loader to dig it out. Needless to say the county used the snow thrower from the airport to clear the road in that stretch. It can handle up to 10 feet of snow and literally can throw snow over houses. Was kind of cool watching it work up close.

IA's just had 7 here (more in other parts of the state)... story is that it's heading for NY... not sure where in NY, but NY. Guess is that it's going to meet up with the storm coming from Atlanta, and hit NY and north

What a mess I have seen on the news. My cousin and her husband have been trying to get here to Florida from NH. They left NH Monday Morning and finally took a hotel in VA. Tuesday they got on the road and found that the interstate 95 was well plowed they were able to maintain a steady speed and made better time than they thought they would. Not what they usually do on their trips to Fl. Yesterday afternoon found them near Beaufort SC where they planned to stay for the night.Today they should make it in to Lakeland. I must confess I was more worried about their trip than they were. After all they are seasoned New Englanders and driving in adverse conditions is normal for them. I well remember my years up there.
My heart breaks for the folks who were stranded on highways during this storm. So many wrecked cars and injured people.
As for my cousins they will be here today and expecting to break out the shorts and flip flops. They are going to have to keep the heavy clothes on for another day or two. Florida is going into another cold spell. Hopefully it will be the last for this winter.
I have friends in Atlanta and he works at the airport. He has stayed home the last few days. They tell me that their yard has 3 inches of ice in it. Unusual for Hotlanta for sure. Still my thoughts and prayers go out for those affected by this terrible storm.

Up here in the northeast (southwest CT), we've just got our third snowstorm, my town got 18 inches this time. Fortunately plows are out in full force and later this afternoon will walk into town, take some pictures and do some window shopping. I-95 and MetroNorth pretty socked in for now. But we have power....

Each region has it's special climate. People in Chicago, for instance, say Pfft to a little snow, but when they get a heat wave people die because they are not set up to deal with brutal heat. Well insulated buildings, lack of fans and air conditioners etc. Fact is, Atlanta is no more able to deal with snow than Chicago is able to deal with temperatures in the 90s. (Using Chicago as an example because my dad grew up there.) We all like to brag a bit about our weather extremes. While Minnesotans yawn about snow storms, Atlanta will laugh up it's sleeve about temperatures in the 90s. I personally have to say my climate here in Aheville is ideal... mild winters and cool summers. We are prepared for both snow and heat. So now I have had my little bragging session too.

I have to agree with you. We have friends in Norcross, GA and they came here for Christmas 2 years ago to visit with family and friends. Neither one had seen snow and dealt with cold weather on a constant basis. All they did was stay at her sisters house the whole time and never ventured out even though the temp's were around 32 and we only had 3 inches of snow.

But it makes you take pause in where we live. My wife would love to move south. But moving south only causes you to stay indoors in the air conditioning when it gets really hot. Much like northerners stay indoors with heat during the cold. I would much rather deal with the cold as there is no law about putting another pair of pants on. But if I am walking around town with nothing but a pair of sunglasses on because of the 110 degree weather, I am sure that I will going to the slammer.

This was so hilarious! I saw it first on ABC News; made me laugh out loud! What a hoot, downtown Atlanta & ice skating, such an oxymoron. They still have P'tree and 10th closed with 2"s of ice. Closed several entrances to the interstates again today due to the icing. Temps too cold to melt much and what melted is already frozen again, predicting overnight temp of 14...ye gods this is Hotlanta, what the heck's going on? 15 mi backup on I-20 coming into Atlanta from AL...truckers, pickups, and few hardy locals in cars stalled out there since mid-afternoon with no idea how long they'll be out there .

Very little melting here at the house, too cold & windy & cloudy. Went out and shoveled some, a pathway to the garbage can esp needed, hadda break thru the 0.5-1" ice crust...did that until my shoulder said stop now or suffer and my toes were shrieking from the cold. The family across the street offered to clear off the driveway & cars, drive to the store for us, the uncle and oldest boy were flinging shovels of ice and snow on each other...entertainment! I was so grateful I baked oatmeal-apricot-cranberry-orange cookies for 'em and promised the kids they could come over and bake chocolate chip cookies tomorrow. We've all got cabin fever! It's won't be above freezing until Friday afternoon, so it's likely the kids are gonna be home the rest of the wk. Horrendous weather!

Got a 30" icicle hanging off the gutter outside the kitchen window!
