OT Historic Snow in Atlanta! Day 5 Update
OT Historic Snow in Atlanta! Day 5 Update
Started about 9:15 PM @ at least 3"/hr here on the northeast side of Atlanta, looks like heavy fog outside, heavy wet snow...the family across the street are all outside playing in this historic snow. They're predicting 4-6" for this part of town but if it keeps coming down at this rate, it's gonna more than that...new just said they're gonna make new predictions in a few minutes! Looks like my area will be in the show area thru Monday morning, then all bets are off for a few hrs. I've never seen snow like this in Atlanta and that goes back to when we moved here in '68!
They've got major interstates closed with accidents and iced overpasses. Looks like vehicles are going maybe 5 mph thru downtown on i75-I85 -- they're advising people not to abandon vehicles & have a snow emergency kit! Pray for us y'all; Atlanta's got 9 sand trucks and my county has 5...boy are we in trouble or what? Lookout Carolinas, it's acoming your way!
Got fresh batteries in the recording oximeter and set it to alarm at 91% just in case the power goes out tonight and I need to switch to using it. Sure hope my body remember how to fall asleep without equipment!

Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
My kids are so jealous--it only snows here about every 20 to 30 YEARS. We had about 3 inches 9 years ago. My little one, who is 10 and doesn't remember that snow, was demanding a snow day this week. Sorry--we're smart enough to live where you don't have to dig the car out in the morning.

Been watching your interstate traffic on the Weather Channel, Muse.
It's moving my way -- gonna have it tonight and all day tomorrow here.
Build a snowman tomorrow, while you can! And post a pic.

Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
Two of my Atlanta facebook friends tried to get their kids out of bed to play in the snow, and both children refused, saying they would play tomorrow. So now the adults are out playing by themselves.
Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
I was wondering where was all our snow now I know
But seriously speaking, I hope things be all right in Atlanta and Tennessee; 4 to 6 inches is a lot when you are not used/prepared to deal with snow. Here snow tires are mandatory since last year because we had a lot of car accidents because of 4 season's tires are not enough for winter conditions with ice and heavy snow.
Muse, I wish you a nice sleep with no electricity interruption .

I'm in South Carolina. We are bracing for the snow to come. I have a friends and family in Atlanta. Say a prayer for them. My cousin is a truck drive and he drives at night. So he is out in the mess. He drives from Atlanta to Tennessee and back each day on his route.

Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
We have about 4.5" of snow. It's stopped for right now; the icing & sleet is south of the city at this point but it might startup again overnight. Tomorrow it's starting all over again. This is gonna be a disaster...we are not prepared for this sort of weather! Because the city is just blanketed with snow right now, there's no power outages. Tomorrow, when the icing & freezing rain arrives, it'll likely be a whole different story for parts of the city where the trees haven't been cut back -- Weather Channel just said another 1-3" atop what we've already got on the ground.
Msradar, prayers for your cousin, hope he left early ' cause the roads have been a mess here since about 10 PM.

Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
I want to say Jan 1988 but not sure of the year right now, I went to a meeting in downtown Atlanta. This was a several day affair and I stayed a few blocks away from the convention center. I remember walking on snow and ice to and from the meeting. The mall next to the convention center was, well, understaffed, as the locals couldn't get into work and us out of towners were scrambling to find a place to get a bite to eat.
It was interesting to say the least and I do remember coming down with some nasty bug that trip which went to pneumonia and I am sure I spread the bug all over the plane and train trip home as I do recall hallucinating that last night in the hotel from the fever.
I do hope all of you, especially those faced with lack of power, stay warm and safe during this.

good luck Muse
We're dealing with snow here too! Should have 6-8 by the time it's done (Tuesday), supposed to start blowing tonight/tomorrow, which should make for an interesting commute tomorrow.

Re: OT Historic Snow in Atlanta!
OK, it's really a mess here! I've got 5" total with the top layer almost 0.5" of ice. Had to crack a slot to get a ruler down -- that was after I had to break up the durn stuff and sweep it off the covered concrete walkway! It's wet underneath so it's gonna freeze for sure in a few hrs. The temp is 24 on my porch tho the weather folks show it a few degrees warmer. 2 vehicles went down the hill or at least that how many tire tracks there are in the snow covering the road. Right now they've closed the interstates in 6 places and some vehicles have been stuck behind jacknifed 18-wheelers for at least 3 hrs. Downtown got less snow. Anytime now the freezing rain is supposed to start...oh joys, more mess. With icing, the worry is trees falling on electric lines, so far we've dodged that bullet but freezing rain all bets are off.
With windchills in teens, it's even too cold for the kids to come out and play and I sure got cold in my few mins outside so I could measure! The truckers who have to drive thru Atlanta/I-285 to get around are losing momentum and getting stuck making an even worse mess on the roads; they just showed a shot of the live cameras on I-285 and there's at least 11 semis stacked up one behind the other in 2 adjacent lanes, all stopped.

Muse, you keep all that stuff down there, you hear? I've had enough snow in the past two years to make up for my first 24 when I never saw any.

OMG, they're reporting 4" of ice in some places on the interstates This is freaking nuts! They've got slush on the roads downtown which is starting to freeze; it's all snow and ice out here (18 miles further north). Several convenience stores downtown are open and doing a booming business in food sales (some people must not listen to the weather rpts); ambulances are using their parking lots as staging areas. They just announced that all Publix stores closed at 4 PM today. Y'all further north & east have my sympathy!

I just went out in sandals and still wear sun glasses daily : ) Sorry, after all those years of getting snowed in I just had to say this! On a serious note, stay safe.
