I was diagnosed with mild PLM. I had 96 events (18/hr) in the 1st sleep study and 76 (12.8/hr) on the titration night. They aren't associated with arousals so it doesn't need to be treated.

Has anyone been just about to dose off to sleep and then feel like an electric shock goes through you and jerk awake? I wonder what that is?? It hasn't happened since starting CPAP and only once in awhile before CPAP.

Nothing cures insomnia like the realization that it's time to get up!

RLS

Post by jeffgr8 » Tue Jul 31, 2007 8:58 am

My sleep study doc didn't tell me or say I had RLS until my follow up after getting new cpap , and I said my wife was complaining about it .I am on my second cpap and been on a cpap for 7yrs. Iam taking REQUIP 1mg. for it and it works great! also I have always been one of those people that does not wake up well in the morning , it seems to take me an hour or so to get moving in the morning . Talked with my MD about it and started taking PROVIGIL 200mg. and within 30 min. I am fully awake and ready to go for the hole day! and I don't get the yawns in the afternoons or evenings any more!!

I had about 3 1/2 hours sleep with 86 leg movements in that period of time and woke up with 11 of those.
At the sleep study on CPAP those leg movements stopped. I always say the even if I don't sleep perfect and my mask bugs me it was worth it to control the plmd.
Some nights I think I am still bothered by PLMD and that everything is not completely controlled but at least greatly improved.

i had RLS for years. The worst times for me were long car rides when I wasn't driving and in the evening when I tried to relax on the sofa. About 6 weeks ago, my podiatrist recommended alpha lipoic acid and a sleep study for nerve pain. I never mentioned the RLS. But about 6 weeks into CPAP treatment and the addition of the alpha l.a., I find myself without RLS. Happily, my feet no longer feel as though a thousand pine needles are sticking into them at night.

Sharon, I did a google on that topic and came up with several entries which I'm including. I first heard about the ala several years ago in a diabetic mail list. It has been a common treatment for neuropathy in Europe for many years. However, it never helped me because I didn't know the correct dosage. My doctor prescribed 1200 mg daily. He told me that a fairly recent study in
Germany indicated that 1200 is sufficient to get the job done and that 1800 mg was not a more effective amount. I believe that scientists are beginning to look at ala as a possible help for Alzheimer's, also. I've never heard of anyone having any negative side effects from this supplement. Let me know if you try it. I'd like to know if it helps. http://www.google.com/search?q=alpha+li ... =firefox-a

BTW, if you are interested in ordering the ALA, there are many places on the internet that sell it. I have absolutely no interested in this vendor, but we had success with vitacost.com

Neither answer in the poll was correct for me so I had to choose the one that said "I slept like a baby" since I didn't kick and do not have either PLMD or RLS, but I certainly did not sleep very much during my test from all the wires and then the mask they used was so uncomfortable and tight that I could never get relaxed enough to sleep well and certainly "not like a baby." I'm do feel if they had used the interface on me that I now use I would have "slept like a baby!"
