Hi, my husband and I went in to see the sleep Dr. yesterday and sleep study was set up for January 28th,however, I have a friend who is the manager of the sleep clinic and she just called me and told me he could come in this thursday night,Jan.3rd!
So we are excited to get this show on the road,

By the way, I told the sleep Dr. that I had been letting my husband use my old machine and he said, well, good for you, does it seem to be helping him?
He said it sounded like it was well on the way to success but we had to have a sleep study to meet the criteria for insurance.

So,thanks everyone,I'll keep you posted.
Have a great night.

Tell that to his GP; blow up his lungs, indeed! This is great news. I wish both of you the best in this adventure.

Hi,
well, my husband went in for his sleep study last night, don't really know anything yet, have to wait for the Dr. to read it.
Please send up some prayers for us that he won't have apnea.
As you all know, the techs aren't allowed to tell you anything.
GOD BLESS YOU!

Maybe a very old rule of thumb: 1 cm H2O per 10 kg weight (10 kg is about 22 lb).
Then see how it feels in the morning.

Basically, I guess, 6 cm H2O would not feel like not getting air, but would show
events better when it is not curing all of them (I guess Elite records AHI?).

Well, here's another update on my husband. The dr. called last night to give him the results of his first sleep study.
He told him he had mild sleep apnea but the main concern was the restless leg movements,he said they were really terrible. However,he didn't schedule another titration study, just told him to continue using my old c-pap machine and he would follow up with him in 3 months to see how he was doing!
Now,we are totally confused, where is he going to get c-pap supplied for the next 3 months?
I don't have that many that he can use until then.
What he is using now are some old ones that I had from years ago. We thought that we could manage until we could get another sleep study done, but 3 months away?
this just doesn't add up to us.
I called the dr's office back and they suggested I get what he needs through my Dme but there's no way I can do that as I just got a new mask in December. This just doesn't make any sense to me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

This does sound confusing. He is supposed to use the machine but didn't get an RX? Although the doc sees benefit in the therapy if not for apnea for RLS, maybe the level of apnea doesn't qualify for a therapy diagnosis per your insurance or something, but the RLS should. I would either insist that at least a mask RX be written for him so you can get insurance coverage or you will have to purchase mask supplies without insurance using your rx or at online merchants who don't check for rx's.

I'm going to PM you.

Today my dr. called and he's going to order me an autopap[rental] to try for 30 days to see if we can improve my therapy. My guestion is, if I can get my husband to try my c-pap for 1 night to see if he has apnea wouldn't that be allright to do?
I know he will never go in for a sleep study unless I could prove to him that he needs one.
He snores really bad.
He has restless leg syndrone.
He gets up many times at night to the bathroom.
He falls asleep, mouth open and snores and gasps in the daytime,[ anytime he sits down]
He has acid reflux
Am i wrong to want to try to prove to him that he needs a sleep study?
I love him!
thanks!!!

You should record him sleeping so he can hear himself snore that might change his mind

Have you seen the actual sleep study results yet? Even if the AHIs were below the cutoff necessary for treatment justification for insurance purposes, xpap is often used for treating restless legs and other sleep issues, so he should qualify for insurance purposes.

Regardless, if the doc wants him to stay on cpap for the next three months, HE NEEDS TO WRITE A PRESCRIPTION FOR IT. Period. End of story.

Call the doc's secretary or nurse and ask for a prescription (you know by now how to get the right kind of machine). I don't see how the doc can say "stay on cpap" but not write a prescription or support it as medically necessary.

The doctor may have simply misunderstood the use of the old machine and thought he planned to keep using it. Regardless, compared to where you started and the hurdles you've already overcome, this one should be easy.

I worked in the medical field for many years and I know that if the Dr makes any recommendations even over the phone, be it a medication prescribed, referral to a specialist, or some medical equipment, etc, he must document that conversation in the patient's medical file. So if he's recommending cpap therapy for your husband based on a sleep study he must document that he spoke to the patient, discussed the results, wrote an RX for a machine, and wants a F/U visit in 3 months. I remember one of my bosses had some trouble with the medical board because he failed to document in a patient's file that he referred her to a breast surgeon after he found a nodule in her breast. The patient did not follow his recommendation for several months and deteriorated, but claimed he never told her to see a surgeon. He won the case but we set up some strict office procedures so that could never happen again. Aah, the good old days!

Well, things have definitely changed the last few days and I'm afraid not for the better.
My husband told me 4 nights ago that he couldn't sleep with the c-pap,his back was bothering him and he just couldn't deal with the pain. He said there was just no way that he could lay that was comfortable,so he couldn't use the c-pap.

We saw the DR. this morning and he did x-rays, said the lower spine was really messed up,he has curvature of the spine(scoliosis). There is nothing they can do,they are going to start physical therapy Thursday to give him some relief.

I don't know at this point if he will consider the c-pap or not,I have and still am pointing out the reasons he shouldn't give up.He started off so good but after a week or so he began to have problems and began taking the mask off when it got uncomfortable.
He says I just can't understand why the mask will seal so good for awhile and then it gives you problems.
I am trying so very hard to help him with what I have learned, but I don't know.
