Pressure change
Having read on here how one person had better results by turning up his pressure by one point I would like to experiment. I sleep but am prone to waking in the night and rarely sleep more than 6 hours. I looked at my machine but have no idea how to change anything. Can anyone help?

Don't touch it. If you have sleep problems go back to the sleep doc that diagnosed you. If you mistrust his ability then find another sleep doc.

To get into the clinician's setup mode in a REMstar M Series CPAP machine or a BiPAP M Series CPAP machine follow these steps:
1. unplug the power cord from the back of the CPAP machine
2. hold down both the left and right arrow keys while simultaneously plugging in the power supply
3. once the device beeps twice, you can release the buttons
After you hear the two beeps, you'll see the word setup in the lower right corner of the LCD screen. When you select setup you'll be in the clinician's mode where you can adjust every feature of the CPAP machine, including the pressure setting.

And don't put too much credence in what Calist says... he seems to routinely be a negative influence on various posters re various issues.

I would just go up 1 cm for now. Leave it at that new setting for about a week and see how you feel. What is your current pressure setting? You can move it up another .05 or 1 cm after a week, if you feel better but think you could still feel better. Knowing your current pressure would help us to make suggestions.

How do you feel? Is your only problem that you would like to sleep longer? What is your current pressure?
I think it's wrong to denigrate another person's cautious advice, especially since we have so little information to go on. Exacly how is it you would like to feel beter?
Pressures above 10 can increase or initiate central apneas. Unless you have a good working knoledge of the principles involved here, and know exactly what you what to accomplish, I would recommend seeing the doc.

Laura, give us a little more info. What's waking you,apneas, leaks, snores? What's your pressure now, what's your titration, what mask? You know girl, we need to know all the good stuff!

I suggest making sure you write down all of your existing settings before changing anything.
I also agree with those who suggest ignoring "Calist". Some people just like to stir up trouble. Those types have been coming around here for.....ever.

Hi! Thanks for all the suggestions and comments I did not give you enough info. so here goes. My pressure setting is 11 my ramp which I never use is 4-11. I do have access to the software but no reader. I send it to the sleep lab and they send the pages by email. Not to worry about Calist, I thought he was rather harsh and I ignored what he said.
I am not sure what is waking me up. I just find that after about 5-6 hours I am awake. I know I have made progress over the last 2 years but I still think it could be better. The fuzziness is gone from my head but I still feel tired most days but not near as bad. I no longer have the dreams of being unable to catch my breath. My dreams are far more pleasant than they used to be. I do want to do this slowly and carefully and will heed the advice of going up one and leave it for a week or so. My apnea rate when I was diagosed was 83 per hour.
I no longer go to the same Dr, I did not feel comfortable with her and switched to another Dr. since. I like her much better and feel mor secore in her care.
I hope this helps.
Thank you all for your advice. I put my faith in those on this list who help so many. I know I post a lot of silly stuff to lighten up the heavy illness we carry. I do read though and am always amazed at the knowledge that is in this forum. Keep on keeping on. You guys are all good caring people.

I don't pretend to being any sort of expert when it pertains to cpap. I have done some research into sleep cycles, though. Apparently it is normal to cycle through all the stages of sleep repeatedly throughout the night. Sometimes one will come all the way to wakefulness. This is normal. I cycle up to awareness usually a couple times each night, but can usually change position and go back to sleep within a reasonable time. However, sometimes I just 'know' that going to sleep just isn't going to happen.
It might be helpful if you could describe exactly what wakes you, and if there is some reason you can't return to sleep. You could be experiencing issues that prevent you from going back to sleep easily.

What? Just to kick up the pressure one notch? You need to spend a week reading this forum and you might learn something from the experts here. I use to be ignorant on this subject myself until I got help from the good people here who are very knowledgeable (if you can give them some data).Calist wrote:Don't touch it. Hello Everyone, I just got back from my job, I work away over the weekends. So while I was setting up my cpap I took the advice of one kind soul and went up just 1 setting. I will try this out for a while and see what I think. Someone asked what my AHI is and I cannot locate the last report I had. It is possible that it was a victim to my last shredding frenzy. I am not sure of the exact number but it was 2 or 3 or 4. I remember someone asking and looking it up. At my age remembering my name can be a challenge. So we will go with the setting at 12 and see where that takes me. To be sure I will be reporting all details to my reliable panel of experienced experts. Thank you so much for your assistance.

I asked about the AHI, if it was 2 or 3 that's pretty good, raising the pressure may even be better. Keep us posted.

Laura - a lot of us sleep fewer hours than we used to prior to Cpap, including myself, and while I find it doesn't feel like enough a lot of the time, I do take a short nap during the day (with machine) so manage to get in 'enough'. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you still don't feel good. And do remember that the older we get the less sleep we apparently need anyway. I would be a bit careful about moving your pressure any higher at this point though because it's getting to that point where you don't want to provoke any centrals (you probably aren't there yet, but take it easy).
