I hate my clock radio from B B and Beyond that has lots of sounds like rain and wind and waves.
Somewhere in each track I hear a cat meowing one time, so I lay there and wait for it. It's very distracting and annoying.
So I don't use the sound part. I love white noise so I use a small fan but yes, it needs to be cleaned often.
Good luck finding something you like.

I also have one noise machine that is a digital recording and there is a little blip of something in it, and it cycles back over that section and I don't like it. I much prefer the white noise machines that the OP asked about originally (variously marketed as Sound Shield and Sleep Mate).

Yea some people said they used recordings but they could tell when it looped and would listen for it. apparently this is a fan inside so no looping. I got mine and i have to say i was kinda worried it would be a waste, but it seems to drown out any noise and help relax me. i'm happy so far
