As it stand now here at the park, hoser-category-vote fans, the vote stands at 30 "yes" votes to categories and 45 "no" votes--a very pretty 60/40 split.
Soon, though, some forum participants will contemplate whether it is worth it to use their 20 other login identities to tip the vote the other way, just to keep things interesting.

Congratulations Bev! A welcome OT!
I think that the "situation" that started this poll has been resolved. Given that, in my opinion, there is no further need to continue this thread and most people are happy with the way the forum is right now---today - Aug. 10, 2010 and it should continue like this.

And apropos of that, I wonder, when a Snoop Dogg, or a Dr. Dre, or a Beasty Boy, sets pen to paper, does he affix tempi? Or time signature? I struggle to name a single waltz by any of the above.brain_cloud wrote:On the other hand, the least used tempo indication in music is "moderato". Since this has also turned into a general “forum improvements” topic, I find the lack of the following features extremely confining:
1) The ability to easily put footnotes in posts.
2) Greek font.
3) Umlauts and accent egues.
Accent egues alone would allow a thousand Gallic flowers to bloom.

Absolutely not! The fundamental purpose of this site is medical -- OSA support.
Those with an _overwhelming_ need to blab about, in sms's words, "employment, politics, spiritualism, family, sex etc" should go to sites whose purposes are exactly that.
Or see a therapist.

I respectfully say:
I can understand that you are very proud of a new grandson. What I cannot understand is this. How many people on this website do you _personally_ know? Not someone whose username you're familiar with, but who you know personally. Why would someone who, as some even do, live on a different continent want to know?
wm:
> People can read and contribute to or avoid any thread they do

That's only good in theory, not in practice.
The negative effects of OT threads -- and even worse, threads that get hijacked with OT posts in them -- is to DILUTE the usefulness of this forum. The fundamental reason that people come to this forum is to get medical information, knowledge, and advice. Anything that DILUTES that has a negative effect.
Perhaps there are those who have so little interaction with others in their life that this forum represents "their life". It shouldn't be that way.
The fundamental issue here is _purpose_. Arguments to change this incredibly helpful medical-related site to "social networking' are, at best, misguided. At worse, they're an attempt by the clinically overbearing to dominate the conversation by making it "about them".
There are other sites specifically designed for social networking. But where else can you go to get such excellent SA advice?

I have to agree. There are a host of instant message applications, there is facebook, and there is Adult Friend Finder. That should fill the spectrum of needs.xyz wrote:sws:

Posters XYZ and Really_Ugly---So how do you ensure that only medical OSA discussions occur in our threads?
You can't rely on the OSA-posting public to voluntarily adhere to that---since our views drastically differ about what we need. Since when does emotional peer support not fulfill a therapeutic need among sleep disorder patients with Quality of Life issues?

Re: FORUM CATEGORIES - (Just hear me out…)
I totally agree with you SWS. If OT topics bother them they should just ignore them don't read them so there will be nothing to complain about.I think one of the reasons I have checked this forum everyday for the last 5 years is the friendliness. Even though I haven't met anyone in person I feel some are my friends.
Re: FORUM CATEGORIES - (Just hear me out…)
Usually when someone says that, you can be sure that something very disrespectful is about to follow.xyz wrote: I respectfully say:
Even though I have only met, in person, a handful of the members here, I feel a close kindred spirit with many more. I don't have to have met them. I know which people I would be friends with if we were in closer proximity just by reading their posts. We understand each other. We care about each other. If you don't feel that way, that's okay. Just take what you want out of the forum and pass over the rest.

Re: FORUM CATEGORIES - (Just hear me out…)
Hearing about Bev's grandbaby made my day. That sort of thing is much of what the forum is about to me. There are enough cold, hollow, clinical (in a bad way) apnea boards in the world already.
She never took me up on meeting my father though, so I guess she doesn't do the social networking thing.

Re: FORUM CATEGORIES - (Just hear me out…)
About the popcorn... There's microwavable and regular, there's buttered and unbuttered, there's low fat and high fat, there's kettle corn (my favorite!), seasoned, etc. If I were to categorize them, the buttered goes in the "Buttered" category, of course, and the low fat goes in the "Low fat". But if it's buttered and low fat, where does it go? And what if it's buttered, low fat, and seasoned?!
OK, so I propose this system:
(1) buttered, low fat, seasoned
(2) buttered, high fat, seasoned
(3) buttered, low fat, unseasoned
(4) buttered, high fat, unseasoned
(5) unbuttered, low fat, seasoned
(6) unbuttered, high fat, seasoned
...
You know what, I'm not that hungry after all.

xyz, do you realize your lengthy post has nothing to do with apnea or CPAP? It's technically off-topic. Care for some popcorn?xyz wrote:sws:
