ResMed S9 coming soon?

Post by KatieW » Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:47 am

Here is the link to the transcript of their phone-in session. I've cut and paste the parts that refer to the S9.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/186814- ... ipt?page=1

ResMed F2Q10 (Qtr End 12/31/09) Earnings Call Transcript

Kieran Gallahue, ResMed's President and CEO.
The initial introduction will be the F9 (should be S9—transcription error?) AutoSet and the F9 Elite products expanding to other flow generators over time. We expect the launch to begin first in Europe and then expand to the Americas later this quarter. We're extremely proud and excited about the unique advantages of the F9 and what they will bring to the market. The F9 will have a new look and feel that will integrate within the bedroom while delivering advanced and improved feature such as (inaudible) and heated circuit or hose for improved patient comfort, a simplified user interface, and an enhanced AutoSet algorithm, it is absolutely going to be an outstanding product.

Peter C. Farrell Ph.D.:
Andrew, there are many benefits that would take the length of this conference call to cover. But obviously you’re not really there to that level of detail on investor relations a bit like this. If I could summarize the three major benefits, I’d focus on the three Cs that it brings, comfort, compliance and connectivity. There’s more including cost effectiveness and others. But the comfort that you can get from this product from the new climate line system that provides a heated wire circuits. We’ve closed loop control of temperature and humidity. Incredible. The enhanced (inaudible), which brings even low (inaudible) and more comfort and low worker breathing for the patient. Which all leads to greater compliance. Which is what the patient wants. It’s what the provider wants. And it’s what the insurance company wants as well.

But we’ve also added increased expansion of conductivity. So we’ve taken our S9 wireless capability that we have really worked on these last five years on the S7 and S8 range to the next level. And we’ve added other ways to get connectivity. So I don’t want to go into too many more details on it. Other than to say that the initial reception from our internal sales teams, the French national sales team earlier this quarter got it and they launched at the national pneumology conference this last weekend in France. Amazing reception from the physicians and from customers.

So early days but seeing great response in Europe and looking forward to the full data of the quarter, taking it to the rest of the world.

Peter C. Farrell Ph.D.:
Yeah, Matthew. We will have the ability to do management by exception with the S9 system and there will be an S9 wireless module that will connection the back of the S9 devices that takes the data from the device to the cloud and allows the home care providers, HME, and physicians, to have access on a protected basis to that information and so they can go and manage their patients and choose how, where, and when to get back to their patients to encourage them to increase their therapy or participate more in their therapy or address mask leak or look at say a central apnea index going up and maybe the patient doesn't need just the basic CPAP and APAP, maybe they need an upgrade to a VPAP adapt or some other sort of adaptive server inhalation technology and need to get back into the sleep channel on that front.

So we will have the capability on the S9 platform and it's actually a great advantage for us. No other industry on the S8 II platform had that and we look forward to continuing that on the S9.

I love my S8 AutoSet II, but am excited about the S9. Any comments?

It's probably just my suspicious nature.....BUT....
all the talk about wireless control going over to the
"home care providers, HME, and physicians," is disturbing.
From what experience demonstrates to us, everyday, are
"home care providers, HME, and physicians," suddenly going to get
educated to know what to do for us???
Personally, I don't want my doc, DME or sleep lab changing my thearpy.

I already have "closed loop control of temperature and humidity." Thanks, anyway.

"The enhanced (inaudible), which brings even low (inaudible) and more comfort
and low worker breathing for the patient."
What does that mean???

Is the S9 going to need another version of software??
How am I, the customer, going to get all the data?? from the doc, DME, sleep lab????

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, all over, knowing I have my cache of Resmeds,
safely tucked away in their protective cases,
on the shelf,
in my closet.
Knowing they will be there,
for me,
at my beck and call,
set and controlled,
just as I want them to be.

or look at say a central apnea index going up

A central apnea index going up?

Enhanced Autoset Algorithm?

Hmmmmm

It means the transcribed didn't know the lingo. Suggested version: "
The Enhanced Easybreathe which brings even lower exhalation resistance and low work of breathing for the patient". or something like that.

There are heart devices performance already being monitored from patient homes.........if sleep disorders were managed well, with an equal excellent level of knowledge and clinical skill across the sleep profession, remote access and intervention could be a benefit. I wouldn't be opposed to my current sleep doctor having remote access involvement in my care. I would definitely not allow remote or manual access with the DME I got my machine from. Perhaps, the remote will have a on/off switch....

Interesting stuff!:
The enhanced AutoSet Advantage™
Like its successful predecessors, the S9 AutoSet responds
to flow limitation, snore and obstructive
apnoeas to deliver optimal pressure. In addition, the
S9 AutoSet with the enhanced AutoSet Advantage
provides a different therapy response to closed
and open events using a unique, event responsive
Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) to discriminate
and then respond to obstructive and open airway
events.
The enhanced AutoSet Advantage;
• Identifies different types of apnoeas and
responds accordingly.
Treats obstructive apnoeas over 10cmH20.
• Does not increase pressure for central apnoeas
• Responds to flow limitation & snoring above 10cmH20.
Only increases pressure during inspiration not
during an apnoea

It looks cool! How the therapy is, is another story of course. The heated line with sensor sounds good...would depend how much more $ that is.

Looking at the UK H5i user's manual, it doesn't look like they learned from Respironics in making the humidifier tub simple to open/close/fill/clean...that is one thing I _REALLY_ liked from the PR1 vs the Autoset II. (ok, the H4i tub is easy to clean because the dishwasher safe one completely disassembles! But not easy to fill or open, and requires re-assembly!)

I like gadgets, so I'll try one as soon as it's available.

Augh!!! The Forced Oscillation Technique, I think, was those huffs and puffs and pulses of air which caused me to throw away my PR1. I hope Resmed does it better . . .
