Thanks, Amy. I just would like to know why I am moving in the wrong direction now, especially since I've added a daily two and a half mile walk to my routine. I should not have gained weight. I haven't lost in weeks. I knew my last 10 were going to be hard, but then I got a new scale and saw it wasn't 10, more like 20! I hate new scales. I like the old broken one. And, yes, Amy, you did tell me to return it, but it says exactly what the doctor's scale said yesterday. Did I mention I hate doctor's scales, too???

Okay...vented...let off a bit of frustration...feeling better. I have to hold onto the fact that I went down to a size 8 in my jeans and slacks, and that is very good. I guess it's not so much the weight all the time, but the inches, too. My husband, I have to say, is being really wonderful and keeps telling me that anyone could see the difference, especially in my legs, which is where I wanted to lose it (those thighs needed trimming). One would look at this post, I'll bet, and say, "Is she schizophrenic?" Major change in "tude" from the first to the second paragraph. I'll tell you, just letting it out sometimes helps.

Now I'll get on the scale tomorrow, as I haven't weighed myself in almost a week (be proud of me, Mrs. O/C who downloads her smart card every day...), and it will be up another four or five lbs...Image

Lori,

I am drinking tons of tea, the caffeine keeps me wired and going and I am eating lots of fruit and veggies.

I might have lost just a little, but it is within what I consider my normal range of fluctuation ... just at the low end of that. I'll wait a week to know if I'm really losing or just holding steady.

It didn't help that my family spent last weekend working the kitchen at the show held by a club I'm in (serving up burgers, etc.) and that I became seriously sleep deprived and we all know what happens then! (I'll have another chili dog with lots of cheese ... and those cheeseburgers are really delicious esp. piled high with grated cheddar).

My daughter didn't help. She baked 20 dozen cookies to sell at the show and I was occasionally given one and told to walk around nibbling on it and commenting on how good it was. The things we do for our children!

Come on now Bill....you have to stop blaming it on everyone else...you have to have will power...LOL You can do it...eat a couple of cookies but then stop at that....I don't think I could resist a home baked cookie neither. Yum Yum

I stayed the same... boo hoo ...I now know that I have to really stick with it next week, and I'm sure it will show a loss...well, I hope so anyway.

Her chocolate chip cookies are delicious. And her spiced sugar cookies wonderful. But her oatmeal raisin cookies (spiced with the same family secret five spice mix) are outstanding!

Gah! I'm making myself hungry just typing this .

I was always taught to measure inches, not pounds, especially early in any conditioning program. Muscle is more dense than fat and weighs more. After the initial loss of about 5 lbs, it is normal for weight to go up some, as fat is converted to muscle. This is a stage you have to recognize and get through. Many people give up at this point as they feel their program is not working, when in fact it is. After a number of years of inactivity (kids kinda ruined my personal time for working out) I have taken up a new program and at my age with bad knees, I definitely have to take it slow. I started at about 220 and have leveled off at about 208. The encouraging part is my belt is moving to new holes and I can see the results every day. Right now my goal is to go slow through the winter and build up to where I can do other things that help firm and trim. RIght now I am sticking to a reclined bike to avoid stress on my knees.

So if you feel your program isn't working, don't be discouraged, just keep at it. Congratulations to all of you for your efforts, it will be worth it.

Definitely, when ever I have had a sizable exercise break ( > 6 months ) I will tend to gain about 5 to 8 lbs in the first couple of weeks. I used to dabble in body building/power lifting, and for the most part is seems muscle has a bit of a memory, it generally does not take me long to get about 60 to 75% of where I was. After that my joints can't take the weight anymore

So if you used to be very physically active, my experience would suggest you body is just trying to get back to where it was, and gaining muscle all the way there.

BTW, this is probably as good as any place, finally got the sorta unofficial results from my sleep study back. Monday will be two weeks from it. Over the phone the best answer I could get was the results should be at my GP office this after noon, part of the delay was setting up the order for a CPAP sleep study, they need to call me to make an appointment for. I take this to saying the sleep doctor believe that I do in fact have OSA. Hopefully more details this afternoon or Monday.

BTW, with all of this I have been examining how I've felt over the last 15 years. Now this is where the relevance to this thread comes in. I used to be somewhat slender in the chest and neck, until I started to weight lift. I was a late bloomer, I did not really stop growing until I was about 20, about the same time I started to hit the weight room. In the course of about 2 years I went from a 44" chest to about a 50, and from a 14" neck to 18 1/2", a couple of years later I was pushing an honest 53" chest and 19" neck. Add to this I had a tonsil the size of a golf ball, well, maybe only 75% the size. Shock the begivers out of the ENT surgeon, everyone kept on asking me if I had a cold and had to feel up ever single gland in my body, despite me swearing that they where their normal size, and only got bigger when I did have an infection.

So again, back to way I was feeling, from about the time I could no longer keep up with the weights full time, I think I might have been suffering. I very much remember the cloudiness in a couple of the last 4th year computer science course and many in my Engineering courses. So I seriously suspect I have been suffering for the last 10 to 15 years. Arggggggg......

So Bill, what you saw at QNX, was less han my best .....

As far as the body building, I went from a 53" chest with 36" waste to a 52" chest and 48" waste, got to get the latter measurement fixed. Over the last couple of months I have been forcing myself into the gym, and I do feel better when I do. But sometimes it is a helluva fight not to just go home and to bed after work.

Oh well, hopefully I will know the full results by Monday afternoon. I am really curious to see what my O2 sats did. I know about 3 or 4 years ago when I was in better shape I had over 98%.

Anyway, thanks for listening.

cheers,
Tom

CPAP therapy should give you the energy to willingly hit the gym on a regular basis. And they wouldn't be setting up a CPAP titration if you didn't show sleep apnea during your sleep study.

Tom, welcome to the club, buddy!

Now you need to get your company's clients to develop a CPAP machine for you to program .

I'm up 3 lbs, drat! Must have been that Cincinnati-style 5 way Skyline chili I made Wednesday night!

Oh well, my belt loops have run out anyway. If I get any lighter, I'm going to have to buy a smaller belt and go back to my smaller pants. But it would be nice to see some progress on the scale.

I went back to my DreamFit mask last night (from my UltraMirage FF mask....been having nasal congestion at night). I felt great this morning. Woke up early, went dove hunting, then ran some errands and just back form golfing. I shot a 99! First time I've broken 100 honestly! Honestly! LOLOL

This therapy WORKS! (but I can't wait to be skinny again!)

And then there was the birthday cake last night -- our oldest turned 18! Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday that we were visiting Clearwater for her 2nd birthday; now we live here. And the surprise party tonight at her favorite restaurant won't help .

At least the temperature and humidity are starting to drop. The bike will get a good workout this weekend!

18 already, argggg, hope she does not read this forum, I remember, darn almost 10 years ago now, when we met and she had that cute little crush on me, and now she is going off to college, has a car, and a (unless it has changed) a boy friend. Wow.

So do they still refer to me as Jack?

Wow, time flys. Please pass along a hug from Stacy and I!

cheers,
Tom

Jimmy K,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am going to keep those words about the weight gain playing over and over in my head. Honestly, I won't stop and give up because this is my new way of life. I don't really look at it like a program. I have to realize that in order to stay healthy and in shape, eating correctly and exercise have to be made a permanent part of my life.

So I won't give up. I just won't be as discouraged after reading what you wrote, unless someone who sounds extremely knowledgable fights you on that theory and confuses the hell out of me...which lately isn't that hard to do.
