qjosea, electronics isn't one of my things...your solution sounds very clever, but it looks like it won't work for the resmed s8 autoset ii, which takes this one: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed- ... chine.html.

Do you think a trip to radio shack or similar store would set me up with something I could use for my machine, or is the machine-end adapter just too proprietary?

One quesiton I have for you is? Look in the back of your machine there should be a DB 9 pin connection located in the back. It should have a clear plastic cover on it, pull it off, look to see if it is male ( has pins sticking out) or female (hole for pins to slide in). I think most ResMed machines are data capable, the card is just to facilitate the recovery of data for RT. If this is the scenario you can just buy what I purchased. If you are not sure just take your machine to Radio Shack and tell them what you want to do. They are very good. I used to be a store manager for them about 15 yrs. ago. I'm affiliated to them in any way, nor do get any type of compensation. They just have all kind of neat electronics and I'm just a geak at heart with Sleep Apnea. I'm sure they can help you.

Excellent. Glad you were able to get it to work. I was wondering about this last night as I drifted off. So, it's great to see you got it working. I tend to only down load the data periodically. I lived without a data capable machine for a long time. So, I sense how I am doing:
  • Did I sleep well, or not?
  • Did I dream, or not?
  • Did I snore heavily, or not?
  • Do I have a headache when I awaken, or not?
  • Do I feel sluggish after sleep, or not?
  • Did I have problems with reflux during sleep, or not?
  • Did I awaken frequently, or not?
If I am doing well, I try to read the data once every week or so. But these ResMed ASV machines do not hold more than three days or so of detailed data. So, every now and then (once a week? maybe monthly), I will look at the detailed data. I just want to be certain that what I sense is what is really happening.

Anyway, here's hoping you have many nights of good sleep!

secret agent girl, it appears that adapter consists of two components. The first is a very standard USB cable. One end is the standard USB end to connect into a computer. The other is a standard mini-USB connector to connect to a peripheral device (such as a camera, camcorder, or such). The other component is the adapter that replaces the card holder in the back of the ResMed S8 Series II units. I do not know what is under that card holder, but I would not really want to connect a cable to that connector without the adapter provided by ResMed. Compare the photos showing the back of the ResMed unit without the adapter:

http://www.resmed.com/us/products/s8_au ... s&sec=true

to one with the adapter:

Though it might work, if there were problems your warranty would be toast. Worse yet, you might be left with a unit that no longer works.

Looks like only a smart card or some kind of smart card-like adapter would work. That is, if such a thing exists outside of the spendy ResMed product. ...
If those photos are what you see on the back end of your unit, then the ResMed S8 Series II units have a VERY proprietary connector. I've NEVER seen anything like it. I assume a DME would either install the Data Card module or the USB adapter module. The USB adapter module (in your previous link) should connect to that connector on the back of your unit. So, your choice is to either obtain the data card adapter or the USB adapter to connect to the back of your S8 AutoSet II unit.

If you had a ResMed Smart Card unit in the back of your unit, you would purchase the following:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -cpap.html

With out the ResMed Smart Card unit, you might want (as you previously noted) the USB adapter:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... chine.html

That module in the middle of the picture (and the picture with the adapter installed) connects to the connector that shows in the back of your unit.

Hope that helps. Sorry there are not less expensive choices. There are a lot of very valid reasons for ResMed to restrict access to the electronics within their units. Though it would be nice to just plug and play, the fact is that many manufacturers fail to follow the rules. If that led to product failure, it would make a mess for ResMed and their patients. Thus it is easier for them to have a proprietary module that creates a standard interface (either the data card or USB cable). It my opinion, it is probably the best method for them to offer access to the data. It offers flexibility and can be customized to the need of the provider and patient. But it does come at the expense of the interface module.
