SITE GUESTING ME AND NO NOTIFICATIONS

Post by Sleepless on LI » Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:23 pm

I don't know if this happened to anyone else but me today or if it's just my computer, but I have been guested over and over again, even when I sign in and click the box to leave me signed in. I'll sign in, click on a topic and then see I am logged out again.

Also, I don't seem to be getting all my notifications about the threads I've been watching alerting me to new posts. I have had to just view all the topics and try to see if there have been new additions to them. I even restarted the computer, but it signs me out again. Either I have a serious problem or something is up with the site today.

Anybody have the same problems?

Hey, FF. And it just did it to me again. That's what I get for downloading an MS Update for Windows XP this morning...it's probably my computer. Time to go troubleshoot. Thanks for the info.

Steve,
This has never happened to me. It's a non-stop thing. I look at one thread and then I go to reply and I'm signed out. What is going on?

Once again, that guest was me, Sleepless/Lori. I had just signed on seconds before. I am getting really frustrated with this.

FROM SLEEPLESS ON LI - NOW OFFICIALLY CALLED "GUEST" ON THIS SITE.
I now officially cannot leave a reply without being a guest. If I sign in and then go back to the thread, I stay signed in until I hit reply and then I'm a guest again. I hate to say this, but I think I'm not going to be able to continue on here unless this is fixable. Maybe I'll try reregistering under a different screen name. After all, I'm not "Sleepless" anymore.

A lot of forum software (not sure how this one works), stores a cookie on your computer so it can recognize you when you come back.

If this one uses a cookie and you have security on your browser not to accept cookies, OR a utility program that occasionally deletes cookies as part of its routine maintenance, then you will not be recognized when you return to the site without your cookie.

There's also the possibility that the forum software might have a bug, but if it does it's being selective about who it guests. I've never gotten guested yet in about 5 months of using the site.

HOLY ****, they let me write a signed-in post!

Chrisp,

It would be more than 1313 if you count all my "Guest" posts, too!!! I just tried restarting my computer one last time and am running a few scans with some software to see if I've picked up some sort of pest somewhere. Hopefully not. I was going to change my name, but felt bad since I have been Sleepless on LI since signing up here. If it continues, I may have to try that before I leave the site for good, which I really don't want to do.

Lori,

It would be a shame to have to change your username, but then again you could become Sleeping on LI since you are a CPAP success story!!!

Neversleeps,

They say great minds think alike . So help me, I swear to God, I was re-registering before and that's exactly the name I put in and then thought to myself, "I can't do this yet...I'm losing my identity." I thought about the exact rationale that you cited in your post about now that I'm actually sleeping, that that would be the perfect name. But when I looked at it, I said, "Sounds like I'm giving the location of where I sleep."

In any event, was doing really well a few minutes ago and then I got a new email telling me I had a new post to read. Used the link to get here and I was signed out again. And also I realize that there will be no guarantee that if I re-register, it won't still happen under the new screen name .

Jdacal,

I never had this happen to me, either, since the end of May. Yes, when I do maintenance to my computer and clear my browser's cache and my temporary internet files and cookies, that happens. But I hadn't done that in awhile and here I am getting signed off between reading topics. Very frustrating. I happen to know a great deal about computers. Just fixed my daughter's that was infected with a variant of the vundo.dll bug. So to have something I can't figure out really frustrates me. And not being able to leave a reply under my online identity is also very frustrating. But I'm working on it...

Sleepless,

The best thing you can do is to dump the browser cache and cookies and then log in again. That may be your issue. I have had it happen to me on numorous sites that would not load or let me log in.

Regards,

Ted

Ted,

Good idea. My scans aren't turning up much. Used EZ Cleaner and Ewido Security Suite 3.5 for unnecessary files. That latter found some and I deleted them, but I think I will clear the browser and the cookies. Thanks for the suggestion.
