My problem is I love both types of food. I do love a good tomato, but I like it on fresh white bread with mayo and salt and pepper!
R&R, sounded like something I would have said; that's why I thought you were quoting me. But that is NOT a problem for you, as I see it. I think most people, I repeat "most," like junk food; ie, fried, fattening, rich, gooey food. But you like both, which is wonderful. I L O V E home garden-grown tomatoes sliced on fresh rye bread with mayo. One of my favorites of all time. The few times we didn't have a summer garden at our house, we would pile the kids into the car and go out east on Long Island where the farms are and first stop at a bakery to buy a loaf or two of fresh seeded, sliced rye bread. We'd bring the mayo, knife and napkins and once we found the right farm and picked our tomatoes, we'd sit and make sandwiches. Oh, do I love that! Thanks for mentioning it. Making me crave one.

Margaret, DO NOT FAST! Keep your metabolism burning. Don't sweat one bad day. Just get right back up in the saddle the next day and keep riding (so to speak). I don't really mean go horseback riding . One day doesn't ruin it, so don't be so hard on yourself.

I would be careful with all this fasting. Eating and then not eating is a dangerous pendulum.

Thanks Lori, I value all the advice you give to myself and others.

I don't actually worry about relaxing for one day as I have been doing a Monday fast for several weeks now and it really works for me, but it's not a strict water fast so I include herbal teas, cider vinegar in water with a tsp of local honey, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, filtered water sweetened with a little fructose and lime juice. Provided I get plenty of sleep, I am not hungry, it flushes out my system, and I have a burst of energy and enthusiasm the next day. It may not work for everyone but I would be silly to give it up.

I forgot to mention that in the past I have damaged my metabolism by not eating enough while dieting. But fasting in the middle of eating well /exercising is one way of tricking the old body into using reserves. It doesn't go into famine mode as you return quickly to eating plenty of nutritious food. I believe the Bible promotes fasting for spiritual health as well.

The burst of energy is because you are giving your body nutrician after a day of low blood suger. Remember the bible was written before man understood how the body works. I would run it by your doctor before anyone tries it.

Maraget,

Hi again. I just wanted to mention something. When I used to think the way to lose weight was to eat less, in the beginning, yes, it seemed to work. But it's not true weight loss because you can't really gauge your weight by not eating. You should maintain healthy and regular daily eating habits to maintain or lose. If you fast, yes, it seems to do you good because there are no pounds for that day, or maybe even a weight reduction. But do you find that when you start to eat, whatever you may have lost the day before goes right back to where it was the day before you fasted? Do I ever write ANYTHING simply??? It's just a thought.

I guess if this is working for you, who am I to say it's not right? I am not a nutritionist by any stretch of the imagination. I just have done a lot of research on my own to see what is recommended and so that it truly works for me and I'm not just spinning my wheels doing the wrong things. What you're doing SOUNDS healthy to me. Is it helping you lose or maintain your weight? I don't know if one day a week would really make a difference at all one way or the other. Although, like my son learned in college, if you use one day a week to just binge, it supposedly HELPS you with your weight loss as the body doesn't get used to the stable healthy eating. It shocks the body back into burn mode, sort of wakes up the metabolism. Is what you're doing the opposite? I don't know...just throwing it out there to think about. Like I said, I'm no expert.

Hi Lori
Good to hear from you as usual. What I'm talking about is actually the same thing as your son discovered. Don't let your body get into the same routine. We are designed to survive food shortages for as long as possible by cutting back on internal activity. I reduce my weight by fasting (some of it is only water) but provided I exercise and eat well for the rest of the week I will have maintained some advantage. One advantage for me is that on the days after I don't feel like eating empty calories or a carbohydrate binge.

I'm not recommending that everyone fast and I agree with R&R about checking with your doctor about eating plans.

I was an atheist (sometimes agnostic) for most of my life until I actually opened the Bible and discovered how much they did know. The Hebrew cleansing rituals would have saved millions of lives before modern science discovered the same principles in the twentieth century. If we'd taken notice of the book of Job we would have already known about the secrets of the oceans among other things. Genesis could have explained why the scientists find tropical plants under the arctic ice, dinosaurs fossilized in mid- flight and more importantly why we need a saviour.
I really do love you all and am not ashamed to tell you I am now a Jesus freak.

Margaret,
Love hearing from you, too. Sounds like you're doing what is good for you, and isn't that all that counts? If it's not broken, don't fix it. I try to use that as guidance with most things. Sometimes, I admit, I can't help myself, like with CPAP (the born lab rat in me...). I fiddle with things just to see what will happen if...no more of that, though, for me with CPAP. If it's working fine, I'm leaving it alone! You live and learn, hopefully.

Enjoy the weekend .

Good morning....oops....I guess it's afternoon.
I had a good time reading everybody's posts.
R&R or was it Lori that said something about losing and finding weight. I have a theory (crazy as it may be) that there is a constant amount of weight in this world and when one person loses weight another must gain that exact amount. I know...it's crazy but it seems that everybody else loses and I gain. I'm determined to turn that around. R&R, sorry you gained what somebody else lost. My advice to you it to get rid of it as fast as you can (just kidding). I know it's hard to eat right when you have Crohns. Just hang in there.
Jan in Colo.....I suggest you shoot your personal trainer. I can't believe she worked you that hard. Just remember that one day she'll have kids and hit 30 or 40 or then her metabolism will have it revenge. Why is it that personal trainers and diet leaders are all thin and healthy....why aren't they suffering like the rest of us???
Margaret I don't have an opinion on the fasting. R&R and Lori make some good points. You might just run it by your doctor just to be safe.
Bill Have you every heard of the comedian Gallagher??? Why do they call it "fast" when it seems so slow??? Are you two related???
Lori I think you motivate all of us. Thank-you!!! I know you've really helped me alot with CPAP and masks. I'm looking forward to your words of wisdom on diet and exercise. I'm afraid you may be right about those last 9 lbs. The last few lbs. are always the most stubborn but you will lose them if you stick it out.
Somebody mentioned that last night was their 1st night with CPAP. I can't scroll backward to see who it was but please, post and let us know how it went.
To anybody else interested in losing weight, or are just thinking about it, please feel free to join in at any time. Everybody is welcome to post in about their feelings. The more the merrier.
To anybody that feels like they had a bad week and are afraid to admit it, we REALLY need you to also post. The only way this will work is if we are there to support each other!
Have a great week-end!!!! Amy

GBY Marg, I belong to a church going family, my son goes to Oklahoma Baptist University. There is a lot of wisdom in the bible. But do remember, it was written by man and worse yet, it has been revised and translated by men, and by men whom wanted control of the masses and were not exactly above board. Don't lose sight of that fact. It is full of good priciples to guide your life, but it was written for a people 2,000 plus years ago. You have to apply what we know today and help yourself as well. IMHO, be carefull of suggesting others fast. Always clear radical ways of weight loss prior to applying it. IMHO I think moderation is more the answer, not shock thearapy. But again, IMHO.

Weightloss methods and CPAP

Post by cat-a-tonic » Sat Sep 10, 2005 4:12 pm

I think I want to jump in here briefly, as I am also interested in losing weight AND I have been through a fasting and low volume eating program (that was based upon faith and God). I followed this program for two years - lost 50 pounds - but stayed hungry . As I gradually began to increase the volume of my food, the pounds came back and I have been unsuccessful in my many other attempts of weight loss, including the same faith based program.

I fear the two years of near starvation eating has not only damaged my metabolism but I now struggle EVERY time I try to limit or reduce the food I eat. I do not binge eat and NEVER finish restaurant portions (usually only half the sandwhich and half the fries) - I reach full quickly and stay uncomfortably full for hours afterwards. I am so disabled by my Fibromyalgia right now, that I use a cane and am unable to exercise - however I do go to Physical Therapy twice a week. After 10 days of CPAP therapy I am hopeful that I will feel well enough to address my weight issue. In the meantime I am taking baby steps in addressing all my health problems!

I have a strong faith plus I believe that what works for one does not necessarily work for another - this applies to most of anything, including CPAP and diets. I think it is great that we are able to make suggestions to each other on things to try, whether it is taping our mouths shut (which by the way, might work for dieting as well as CPAP therapy! ) or trying a liquid fast.

This forum ROCKS!!! Thanks everyone!

Hi Carla!!!

Thanks so much for the information. You're right...this forum does Rock. I hope you and others understand that I'm not suggesting everybody jump into dieting and exercising. I think half of the battle is first thinking about it and then deciding how much you can do. It's taken me years to get up the courage to tackle my weight issues. It sounds like exercising is almost impossible for you right now...but hopefully you'll get better soon and be able to be more active.
Thanks so much for your wisdom.
Amy

Cat,

You said so many true things in your post that I don't know where to start. But what you said about the starvation method, it only proves my point. You must lose weight while you eat or when you finally go back to eating, you will put the weight right back on. That's why diets are bad and eating right and enough is the way to go. When you diet, yes, you can lose weight, but it's not a lifestyle for the rest of your life. When you find a way to eat correctly and still lose weight, then you're in a great place. It's like they say, one to two pounds a week, slowly, will stay off because that is TRUE weight loss, not just loss from starving or not eating enough. If it comes off too quickly, it will come back on just as fast because you didn't lose it correctly.

I eat a lot in a day, in my opinion, and still lose weight. I eat enough to keep my metabolism burning but just eat the things that don't put weight on me. I truly sympathize with you for not being able to exercise. That has got to be difficult. Are there any forms of exercise you can do without pain?

Taking baby steps is an intelligent approach to solving and dealing with your health issues. Like someone posted (sorry but I can't remember who right now) in the original thread Amy started for this idea "Anybody Interested," she tells herself she only needs to lose ten pounds, even if she needs to lose fifty, because it makes the thought of accomplishing that a reality. Then once she's lost that ten, she'll say to herslf, "I only have ten pounds to lose," again, and go for those ten pounds, baby steps. Same with your health problems. Don't stress yourself by reaching for the stars when you have to walk before you can run.

One last thing. So true about what works for one doesn't work for another. I made a point about CPAP being like weight loss in that regard. I never mean to infer, when I write what I have done and what works for me, that that is the only way to go and it will work for everyone. That is ridiculous to even think for a moment. We all are so different and there are no hard and fast rules set in stone on how to lose. Too bad.

I really hope CPAP helps you with all your struggles. And keep the faith. Somehow, I think you will .
