Hear, hear! Red wine is my favorite alcoholic drink. I also enjoying brewing beer from time to time, but would rather make wine. And in fact, I'm going to try to make some red wine this season. I've read about 4 books on the subject already. I also would like to try to grow some grapes in my backyard, but I still have a bit of research to do on what will grow on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains here. On the western slope they can grow Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel (I think)! I might have to move to the Western Slope...or buy a vineyard there someday, haha!

I'm going to skip the wine tonight to see if I get any change in my numbers. I even taped my mouth last night for an improved leak line, but quite a few events, unfortunately.

Damn, a perfect valid reason for my sometimes erratic numbers, and me a virtual non drinker. D'oh! Nothing against the stuff, just don't like the taste much.

Can tolerate a dry white wine on occasion - have had mine for this year though! - and do like light beer. But come from a family where alcohol was not a particular focus, and even my ex did not drink at home, so I guess I just don't think about it much either.

But I can get quite nuts or light headed enough without it, does that count? Family'd say I'm 'affected'!

Well I guess I drink a bit more than most here because I rarely can have just two drinks with dinner. Thats just when the party starts to get going. No twelve step program required or anything but I have been known to take a few taxis in my day.

The thing is that I have not been on the hose long enough to collect data when drinking.

Even better news is that since being on CPAP for the last 3 weeks I have naturaly cut back my drinking in a major way. Hopefully this lasts. Anyone else find that once they get their SDB sorted out that they dont drink as much.

you're on, my friend! the next time i'm in town (which should be in a few weeks) we'll have to put this poll to the test!

i can't say that a drink or two really throws my numbers off, but i have noticed it does seem to add to nasal congestion, probably from not drinking enough water. and that seems to bother my sleep a little.

but, hey, i nice IPA, or oatmeal stout, or a single malt... it's worth it.

i'll just crank up the pressure and take my chances!

I worked in Alcohol and Drug treatment/rehab for 10 years and alcohol is defeintely a depressant- unless in the very recent past it has been reclassified- if I find out anything different- or anyone does, please post. It usually bothers sleep in that initially it makes one sleepy but a few hours later it can cause interruptions in the sleep pattern, and can cause the person to awaken- maybe that is where she got the "stimulant' thing from. I am very interested to know. Thanks

Well, I skipped the wine last night and had and AHI of 1.5.

BUT, I also adjusted my top pressure downward. I know, I know, adjusting two variables at a time. Which one did what?

Well, tonight, I'll try having a couple of glasses of wine again around dinner time and see what happens.

My sleep Doctor ordered me not to drink alcoholic beverages within 4 hours before bedtime. He advised that while it may promote the onset of sleep, the effect quickly wears off, prompting you to wake up. I've had this experience and think it's generally believed that alcohol disrupts sleep architecure.

I love beer, but not the effect it has on my waist, so Merlot is my drink of choice.

I have been documenting (among other things) my alcohol intake and apnea counts. For me at least, a drink before the dinner seem to be beneficial. I often take a shot of hard alcohol like vodka or brandy. I eat around 7:30 and sleep around 10:00. So there is only a 2.5 hour gap. When I go to a party and take 2 or 3 shots my apnea seems to get worse. I know doctors say no alcohol at dinner time. But my observations are contradict that. We are all different. For me some alcohol is a great stress reliever.

well, last night i had a shot of whisky not long before going to bed and had a rough night. fell asleep right away, but woke up several times after that and had a hard time sleeping. my AHI was still low, less than 2, but my AI was .8, it's been zero for more than a week.

lesson learned for me - if i had a drink it will have to be earlier in the evening.

Well three Margarita's last night after a full day of hauling flagstone pretty much did me in. Hubby kept leaning over and gently closing my mouth for the first half of the night, second half I had the craziest dreams around. Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and guys from Cake Boss all invaded my head. Mind you The Rock saved my littlest man from some terrorist attack at a mall so all was good. My husband said I was babbling away in my sleep all night long. I haven't looked at my numbers yet but I suspect they won't look good.

Between the massive body ache from doing the walkway yesterday and the minor hangover, I'm not exactly functional at the moment. LOL

Alcohol is known to disrupt REM sleep - the restful kind. I find that if I have wine before bed, I go to sleep fine, but wake up halfway through the night and can't get back to sleep.

For me, it depends on quality, quantity, and time of day.

If I have a couple of glasses of a good red wine in the evenings or with dinner - not problems. If the wine is not so good, well no worries - I don't drink it I pour it out.

A couple of martinis or good scotches after work on occasion, not a problem. Unfortunately, when with some of my friends, it is hard to stop with one or two.

It is only when I have over indulged or drank just before bed that I have noticed a significant impact.

And no, I am not the lush that it sounds like!
