Resmed Autoset II pressure shuts off during therapy!
I've been noticing that my Resmed Autoset II shuts off after I've had some snoring/sleep apnea events during the night. I wake up and notice that the blower motor is off and I have to press the Start/Stop button again. Is this normal or could my machine be defective? It happens about 1-2 times during the night. The Smart Start feature is disabled on my machine.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Hm. I was going to blame SmartStart, but you say you've got it disabled. I had that problem with SmartStart and I turned the feature off. Once I did, the problem went away.

Re: Resmed Autoset II pressure shuts off during therapy!
sifr,
I have a Resmed Quattro full-face mask which has a anti-asphyxiation valve, Resmed Autoset II disables the Smart Start feature automatically. I doubled-checked the Smart Start feature it says it is OFF. The mask setting is MIRAGE FULL for the Quattro mask.
There is a Pressure Change and Mask Fit under Options in the clinical menu, I do not know if this is contributing to the problem?
It might be the algorithms and features of the Autoset that temporarily shuts off the blower when I have high sleep apneas?
It could be that I wake up before the machine turns itself back on and continues my therapy?
I have severe sleep apnea about 55 events/hr and I'm just getting used to the Autoset II for about a month.
Ah the joys and tribulations of CPAP therapy!

Re: Resmed Autoset II shuts off during therapy!
Is the "Leak Alert" turned on or off?
I'm not sure how the ResMed machines work with this feature. In the Respironics machines, if the "Auto Off" feature is turned "ON", the machine will shut down after so many seconds of a large leak or taking the mask off. If the ResMeds have a similar feature, there may be large leaks that are shutting down your machine.
Den
From the provider manual
Note: When Leak Alert is set to ON, SmartStart/Stop is automatically set to
OFF. SmartStart/Stop cannot be used with Leak Alert because, if a high leak
occurs, SmartStop may stop treatment before the Leak Alert signal is activated.
And......
Leak
Leak is derived by analyzing inspiratory and expiratory airflows (via the flow
sensor located in the device). Theoretically, inspiratory and expiratory volumes
should be equal. A net airflow greater than the expected mask vent flow is equal
to the leak. Generally, a leak rate of more than 0.4 L/s (24 L/min) is associated
with patient discomfort, disturbed sleep, and reduced efficacy of treatment.
Notes:
a. If the leak exceeded 0.4 L/s (24 L/min) for more than 30% of the previous
session, the following message will appear on the LCD: High leak in last
session.
b. The Leak Alert feature, if enabled, will alert the patient when mask leak
exceeds 0.7 L/s (42 L/min) for more than 20 seconds. When the leak exceeds
this level, the autotitrating algorithm ceases to perform optimally.
The leak reported in the Efficacy Data submenu (see Figure 11, The clinical menu
results series, on page 34) is the 95th centile value for mask-on time for each
session, or the median 95th centile value for a selected time interval (last week,
last month, last 6 months, or last year). Non-usage days are not included in
calculations.

The "Leak Alert" is turned OFF on my machine, I guess I would see a high leak message on the LCD menu.
My leak rate for last night was: 0.56L/s which means that I had generally, a leak rate of more than 0.4 L/s (24 L/min) is associated
with patient discomfort, disturbed sleep, and reduced efficacy of treatment.
I will turn ON the leak alert, this way I will probably have the machine not shut down on me, when I do experience high sleep apnea events.
Just wondering what Pressure Change in Options in the clinical menu?
Thanks for your information!

Re: Resmed Autoset II shuts off during therapy!
Why don't you try starting the machine while not wearing the mask. If SmartStart is truly off, it should just keep blowing.
If it stops, you know something is wrong.

Re: Resmed Autoset II pressure shuts off during therapy!
jdm2857,
I started the machine while not wearing the mask, it keeps blowing...Smart Start is truly off!
A clue to my particular problem is that I see my AUTOSET pressure goes back to 0, I did not press the Start/Stop button and I wake up and realize that I'm sleeping on my back instead of my side. I think the high pressures and my severe sleep apnea events could be triggering the false algorithms on the Autoset II . My min. AUTOSET pressure is set to 7 and my max. AUTOSET pressure is 18. My AHI have been around the 4-6 range this week.

I don't think that the AutoSet is ever supposed to shut off by itself. Back down to the minimum pressure setting, yes, but not turn off.

Muse-Inc,
I was thinking of calling the DME that sold me the machine, I will call them now.

Maybe it's a new undocumented feature.
Once minimum compliance hours are met, the machine shuts off.

Re: Resmed Autoset II pressure shuts off during therapy!
Just called my DME, they mentioned to me that the Autoset II will turn itself off, if it determines that there is a high leak rates on a mask. I could have banged my mask while sleeping against my pillows. I also have heard that the Quattro has high-leak rates. I would have to press the Start/Stop button to continue my therapy. I could set the Leak Alert to ON with an audible beep, to warn me that there is a high rate of leakage with my Quattro mask.
