Even many, if not most, zoos should not exist and just exploit the animals and shorten their life. There are some good zoos which maintain an almost natural habitat for the animals they display and such zoos often contribute to saving a species from extinction. But usually corners are cut due to financing of most of these zoos at some point and the animals are the ones who get the short end of the stick.

All you who believe that animals like lions, etc. should only be in the wild have believed the lie of PETA, HSUS, etc. Since you very likely don't know a thing about what these lions are actually like, you are simply repeating what you have been taught by them through the media. As the state of the world is right now, captivity is their only hope for long-term survival. At least for big cats, they can be very happy in captivity. And most are, especially those in the hands of those who understand their emotional and psychospiritual needs. The other husbadry requirements are actually quite basic.

And meanwhile, rumor has it that HSUS is going to sneak an anti-pet measure into the next agricultural appropriations bill at the last moment. This way, no one will have enough time to fight it.

HSUS needs to 'be only in the wild' so the carnivores can eat them.

I do NOT buy in to the BS that PETA and HSUS deal out. However, I stand by my statement that wild animals have no place in this world as PETS. And, community zoos have experienced financial problems as well as the rest of us. When push comes to shove police and fire departments are going to receive financing BEFORE a zoo. And we've already seen how often police and fire protection are some of the first budgetary cuts. There are a few well-run zoos in this country. There are a LOT more that are NOT well run nor well-financed and the animals do NOT receive adequate care much less good care.

That may be true Slinky. But remember I already told you three to four million healthy dogs are euthanized each year.

So I can use your argument about wild animals to say no one should be allowed to have a dog.

Unfortunately our species is a mess and you are not going to be able to straighten it out with regulation.

Yes ... eliminate all regulation and make it a more wonderful world.

Since deregulation of the US financial system worked so darn well ... we could deregulate everything everywhere and let all species fend for themselves ... like uhhh what's his name's theory.

Keep us informed, I'll take an activist stance on this. Captivity may be the only hope these marvelous creatures have for continued survival and I don't trust bureaucrats to get it right 'cause they're almost always ignorant in the appropriate science. I 'member the FDA trying to allow sterilized sewer sludge use to be OK under the organic label....puleez. If they set some basic std for care yes (food, health, shelter, limits on types of interactions such as no small cages in shopping malls), anything else they'll for sure get it wrong and make the situation for these creatures worse.

I'll take Rooster's argument a bit further to show how ridiculous it is. "Millions of humans are killed in car accidents each year. Therefore, humans should not be allowed to drive cars"

Lets ask the woman who was blinded and had her face ripped off by a "pet chimp" what she thinks about keeping wild animals as pets. Oh wait, she can't talk. She doesn't have a mouth anymore.

You know, its interesting to note that most people injured by an animal they work with are anxious to return to working with their animal afterwards. The bond between humans and highly intelligent animals is not well understood or appreciated by many.

IMHO Chimps are really dangerous to work with, much more so than big cats. Although completely comfprtable around the cats, I am not comfortable around primates. That said, primate people are a special bunch. They have chosen to work with the most demanding animals in the entire animal kingdom, and enjoy doing it.

For some reason, when primates attack, they go for the face, fingersa and genitals. Thankfully, such attacks are extremely rare.

Is it "interesting"? Or maybe a person who loses their sight and face and wants to return to working with the animal is just simply mentally ill? I am a little leary about these people deciding what the regulations should be.
