Re: Severity of your OSA
I haven't seen my study yet - just heard some of the numbers - 89% average and 56% lowest oxygen saturation AHI wasn't mentioned.
The pulmonary specialist said I was "severe"
However this morning :
AHI 3.4, AI .3, HI 3.1
So I think I am doing better

I'm newly diagnosed with OSA - 50 events/hour, desat to 73%. What is AHI? I was told I have "severe" OSA.

Re: Severity of your OSA
Plant Lady - AHI is the total of the Apneas and Hypopneas that you have per hour while sleeping.
They are referred to as "events". There are other events that can take place while a person with sleep apnea is sleeping but these are the 2 main ones, the Apneas being the worst. With proper cpap therapy, that can be brought down below 5, which the aim of treatment.
By clicking "AHI", "Apnea" and "Hypopnea" at the top of several posts you can find the definition of each. You can also do "search" on the site or click on the yellow light bulb at the top of the page entitled "Our Wisdom".

Baseline Oxygen= 93.8
Lowest Oxygen= 81.0
Mean Oxygen= 94.2
Desaturation Events= 297
Apnea Hypopnea Index (A.H.I.)= 39.8
Obstructive Apneic Events= 49
Central Apneic Events= 5
Mixed Apneic Events 30
Hypopneic Events= 200
Longest Events in Seconds= 88.2
I was titrated at 9.
I had Double Turbinate Reduction & Double Deviated Septum Surgery on 11/20/2007.
It seems to have made my Apnea worse...
I am now going as high as 15 but usually stay at 12 or 13 and seem to have move apneas than in the beginning...
Very strange! I thought my apnea events would get better, not worse, I can breathe alot better though but it appears that I am getting the deviated septum back again from shoving the nasal pillows up my nose to keep my swift 11 from leaking..

Re: Severity of your OSA
Sorry, I'm a bit new to this, is AHI, the number of times you stop breathing during a one hour period?

A few posts below, in this thread, Hawthorne gives this info:My_Dream wrote:Sorry, I'm a bit new to this, is AHI, the number of times you stop breathing during a one hour period?

Re: Severity of your OSA
My first and only sleep study was February 23, 2009 and my AHI during the first 305 minutes of untreated "sleep" was rated at 121 events per hour, with a mean oxygen saturation of 87% and a minimal oxygen desaturation of only 53%. When my readings went that low, the RT's decided to wake me up and put me on CPAP which they quickly titrated to 16cm. When I was sent home from the sleep lab the next morning, I was told to immediately get a CPAP.
My current APAP settings are 14.2 to 18 with no ramp, no EPR and my average AI over the past month is .2 events per hour with an average AHI of 3.8 and about 7.2 hours sleep. If I could get out of the habit of that big nap every day when I get home from work, I'd be tickled pink.
When you can get an improvement like that (from 121.0 down to 3.8 ) its easy to embrace the therapy despite its intrusiveness.

Re: Severity of your OSA
When I did my sleep study the specialist told me I stopped breathing 85 times per hour. I guess that's what you're asking.
Re: Severity of your OSA
Then:
I was diagnosed with ~60 apnea events/hour.
-was waking up once every minute all night
-was waking up several times for trips to the washroom
-never felt rested in the morning no matter how much sleep I got
Now:
Often my machine reports my overnight apnea events as zero.
-hardly ever wake up
-get through the night with no trips to the washroom
-feel rested when I get enough sleep, but lately I have not been getting enough sleep
Getting the apnea diagnosed and under therapy caused my life to take the correct path at that fork in the road. Previously I was headed towards health issues... certainly heart issues given the family history.

Re: Severity of your OSA
my initial AHI was 105 and my lowest oxygen saturation was 54%, i have lots of centrals and the basic structure of sleep has altered from the so called normal- my problems have been put down to mainly the effects of Multiple sclerosis, possibly some effect by medication and a small component of good old OSA
these days my AHI is 0.4, my AI is 0 and my sats above 95 all night, but it has taken a lot of juggling both settings and machines- finally swapping from the respironics adapt SV to the resmed vpap adapt sv and my results went from terrible to great so obviously the resmed algorithm is a better fit for me
