Red bump on the bridge of my nose...

Post by rushman007 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 9:59 am

Need some help. I have completed my second night ever with my CPAP machine, and I slept like a champ. However, the night before, there was a slight reddening on the bridge of my nose in the morning. This morning, the reddening is worse, and a little more sensitive. I wear a full mask, and I know that it should sit loosely on my face, but when it's loose, it leaks.

NEED HELP!

The mask seems not to fit you.
The mask should not cause pain (during or after sleeping with it) nor should it leak (while sleeping with it).
If you are satisfied that you have tried all possible mask/headgear adjustments and still cannot resolve issues, try a different different size or different mask.

DS is right; sizing is important.

Adjusting the mask and headgear is also critical. Something that helped me was to sit my machine on a counter in front of a mirror. Then I could adjust the mask while the machine was running and listen for leaks.

You will find that many of us tried several masks before we found one that would match our individual characteristics.

Before giving up on the mask, you could try wearing a bandaid across your nose under the mask. Or a piece of moleskin.

I have about 14 masks of all different brands and sizes. They all leave a red bump on the bridge of my nose. The best relief that I have found is this:

http://www.padacheek.com/PAC_Nosebridge.html

Send her a message and she will make one to fit your mask. It makes all the difference between red bump and open blisters. And she ships fast.

Good luck,
Bev

I see you have the Quattro... try wearing it higher on your face such that the lower edge of the face seal is just slightly below your lower lip. If that doesn't correct the issue then you may have the wrong size.

Another option is to try a sample of RemZsss to help ease to sores and help with the leaks

http://www.remzzzs.com/

I think its a very small amount to try a sample of these, around $8.

Since you slept well for the first 2 nights which is amazing in itself, I'd take all the above advice before giving up on this mask. My husband had the same sore nose problem with the Quattro as well as not being able to solve the leaks so we switched to the UltraMirageFF.

I started out just like you -- painful nose -- I used the Comfort Fusion nasal mask. It just got worse and I tried the bandaid thing and it helped but didn't solve all the problem. I finally got the Swift LT mask that doesn't have fittings over the nose and I really liked it. That solved the nose problem. But lately I have wanted to get back to my first mask, so I got the PadACheek forehead/nose bridge cover, and am using another headgear (PapCap) and it is working great. (Been doing that for a week.) When I started on cpap my cousin, also a "user" said my only problem would be with the mask- the machine would not be a problem. She was right. I have only had two masks, but I have my eye on two more. Getting that adjustment right is a big issue in this treatment. Sure glad for this forum or I suspect I would not have continued -- but got good answers here that really helped.

I am still very new to this(5 days). So, I can't pretend to be an expert on masks or even the Quattro, which I use too. But I will share what I have learned.

I will agree with those who think you may have the wrong size mask. You may also have the wrong mask-- if you have a really wide nose bridge, I can see why you might have problems with the Quattro.

The mask frame should not come near your nose, and the thicker silicone pads should either barely contact your nose bridge, or not contact it at all. Is your mask height set too low?

The silicone nose bridge seal is very thin, and molded such that it puffs out at you without air pressure. That thin portion needs to lay flat on your nose. If it is not, that could be causing irritation. What I do is push down on the center of the thin portion as I am donning the mask. This way, the seal has less trouble conforming to the shape of your nose bridge. Air pressure does the rest by pressing the seal against your nose.

All in all, this seems to be a mask that works best if not worn too tight, especially at the top.

I use a small bit of a transparent dressing called "tegaderm". They make them under many names, often used to secure and IV in place, I cut a small piece and place it over the bridge of my nose. It really helps and is not sweaty or hot and stays in place, feels like ones own skin, maybe this will help.

Have used the same mask for over a year. Fit is good but the seal rubs on the nose. Dot or small square bandaids work for me.
