My wife rarely changes her sleep number settings from 35, but like to change my settings often. Sometimes, 80 feels just right, sometimes 95, sometimes 45. It's great to be able to "dial up" the firmness that feels best at the moment!

The air in the bladder of the mattress heats up and your side of the bed will continue to get firmer as the night goes on. As far as we are concerned, there is no other bed out there that even comes close to being as comfortable for the both of us as our sleep number bed.
We use an electric mattress pad on the one in the motorhome and have never had any problems with bladder getting noticeably firmer. The Select Comfort website has this to say about electric pads and blankets:

Q: Can I use a heated mattress pad or electric blanket on The Sleep Number® bed?

A: Heated mattress pads and electric blankets can both be used with your Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort™. These accessories are a great way to further customize your sleep! Please note that the use of a heated product with the mattress will cause your Sleep Number® firmness setting to vary. These variations are completely normal and it does not mean your mattress is losing or gaining air. Rather, it reflects the varied pressure in the air chamber due to the temperature difference.

I'm sure there are some small changes in firmness, but not so much as to be noticed by either my hubby or me. So go ahead and use an electric pad or blanket if you want one!

Did the hotel thing both my husband and I hated the sleep number mattress, he researches everything to death and found out they can and some do mildew, after many months in search of the perfect bed we opted for a fully LATEX mattress, no pillowtop as they are made of FOAM. We love it!

We've had our Sleep Number bed for 10 yrs. and as another poster said for me it is misery sleeping on any other bed. I get really sore and so glad to get back home to my own bed. We bought ours because we were both having back pain and it has helped tremendously. Ours is not a pillow top and was the lower end model, but not the very cheapest model. It does have independent controls for each side. My DH likes a very firm bed and I like a softer bed, so it works well for us and I don't notice it when he moves. I have thought of adding a memory foam topper to it to maximize the comfort and also to help sheets fit better, because since it was not a pillow top the extra deep fitted sheets tend to bunch up on the top, but other than that I have no complaints and I for one am pleased with ours, although I can't speak for the current models. Also, my chiropractor has a sleep number bed and says she is very pleased with hers and recommends them - FWIW.
