I had the opportunity to stay in a hotel for a week with a sleep number bed. I hated it. I could not stand the bed at all. I do not understand why it is popular.

Funny thing is that I am looking into a new mattress soon too. In fact --We decided to spend the night at a Radisson hotel as they have sleep number beds to try it out as another poster suggested. We are going there this saturday night to sleep on one. My husband and I wanted to try one out before we buy anything. We had a water bed about 12 years ago when we first got married but since he weighs more than me--I kept rolling down hill all night!! LOL! He gets very warm at night so I think that Tempurpedic might not work out --I'd like to hear from anyone that has the Tempurpedic (and has a bed partner than runs warm)---Carrie

We've had a Select Comfort for almost 10 years. At first, we liked it and it did stop the upper back pain I had every morning. However, it does make 'sleeping together' a little more difficult. My husband removed the divider between the two mattresses (we have a King) because he felt like he was rolling uphill to get to my side. Removing it helped a bit, but the feeling of a high spot in the middle is still there. It's good for giving you each a side of the bed to adjust. I change from hard to soft and back again periodically. His shoulder hurts from lying on his side to watch tv; he feels it is too hard and doesn't give even when it is set to a softer setting. We got the deluxe version with all the foam padding, 3 or 4 different toppings as I recall.

The single remote is unpredictable in that you have to set and reset it, then check it again to see if it registered the new setting.

We are currently deciding on purchasing a new mattress. We bought a Beauty Rest Black firm with pillow top for our condo in Florida that feels good. Firm but soft on top. Lots less expensive. My biggest complaint with all the new mattresses is that they are SO thick! 15 to 18 inches - ridiculous! Hard to get sheets to fit and put on.

Tough decision - good luck!

I've had the problem where segments go missing on the controller...I'll email support about it, and they'll cross ship me a new pump/controller unit.

Only problem is that I've done this 3 times since I got my bed 5 years ago.

When I first started using the bed, I did have the too warm problem...but I also had the bed too soft when I started out. 30 feels great when I first laydown with my aching back...but now my number is more like 55.

Last night I was freezing....guess I switched to lighter comforter and turned off heat too soon....

We've had one for over 10 years now. It's a king with the pillow top, dual controls. The last year, it has been a little uncomfortable, so I called the place. The problem was the head of the bed seemed to be lower than the foot part. They said the had a fix for this and sent us two piece's of foam that went in the base of the bed. Kind of a PITA to take it apart and install this foam, but it has fixed the problem. I did a little research before calling them and 65% of regular bed buyers were happy with their purchase. 80% of air bed buyers were happy. I'm glad I found a fix for this and am once again, a happy Select Comfort owner.

We have had one for several years, and the biggest problem is that if we stay anywhere else we feel like we have been beaten up when we get up in the morning. My low back pain went away as soon as we got it. We needed a new pad last year and I ordered it online. They prorated the cost, since the bed has a 20 year warranty. We are very happy with it.

One more thing to think about (Sue's post about thick mattresses made me think of it). When I bought my new bed, they offered me a low-profile foundation (to keep the overall height of the bed lower with the new thick mattresses). Since the bed I tried out in the showroom was a very comfortable height, I declined the low-profile foundation. Well, when I got the bed in my house, I found that it sat MUCH higher than the one in the showroom; so high that when I sit on the edge of the bed, my feet cannot touch the floor (and I'm 5' 8"). I really wish I had asked specifically whether the bed I got would be the same height as the one I tried out instead of blowing off the need for a low-profile foundation. Also, you may want to take along a pillow when trying out beds. Decent pillows were few and far between at the stores I visited, and it's hard to tell if you really like a mattress if you really don't like the pillow you're trying it with.

If you decide to get one, spend the extra money and get the thicker pillow top of the sleep number beds and the king size. We know from experience that it is worth the extra money. Also, they sell (a rather expensive) mattress cover that pulls the heat away from your body. Hubby used to have night sweats all the time. Since we got this mattress cover, no night sweats. But with the king size bed and thick pillow top, we don't know when the other one rolls over. Hubby has his set on 35 and mine is on 60. One thing to keep in mind...you can't use an electric blanket with these beds. The air in the bladder of the mattress heats up and your side of the bed will continue to get firmer as the night goes on. As far as we are concerned, there is no other bed out there that even comes close to being as comfortable for the both of us as our sleep number bed.

Actually, you can use an electric blanket...just have to keep in mind that temperature change affects pressure.

Even without the electric blanket...I'll experience pressure change by getting into cold bed and warming it up by sleeping in it. At with an electric blanket I can preheat the bed before I check the pressure before going to sleep.

Now I used to use an electric blanket before the Sleep Number bed, but I got rid of it about the same time as I got it. A few years ago, I ordered the electric mattress pad from the Select Number website.

I hated it. The wire connection point is in the middle of the pad on the bed surface. Right where my feet go. The following winter I got a different one where the connection point is over the edge ....

Actually, I still have it installed on the bed....should've thought of using that this morning....

We have had ours since 1996 and love the bed. I'm at 65 and my wife is at 45 psi. It's by far the longest lasting bed we've ever had. Around 1999 we had to replace the air controller and one of the air mattreses, but it was covered under warranty. I will never buy any other mattress and am thinking about getting a new one soon. Very comfortable and easy to sleep on; it doesn't have the heat retention issues that Tempurpedic have.

We like ours. We have a king, dual control and it must be 9 years old or more. We also have a twin one that I used after I had my double knee replacement and needed to have a bed that was closer to the floor. That one has never had to have extra air put in it. The king one finally had to have some extra air added last month.

When I was in the hospital with the knee surgery, I was given a sleep number bed that was adjustable. I would like to have one of those someday, but so far the old one still works just fine. I was worried about the quality of the foam sides, but they seem fine too. It does seem like a lot of money for what looks like some foam and an air bag with tubes in it.

I have both a sleep number bed and a tempurpedic. In both cases they are not the bottom-of-the-line basic versions. My sleep number bed has a memory foam topper and another type of topper and I can choose which I want on top and which underneath the other. My tempurpedic is a middle-of-the line version.

I haven't had any problems with either and have used both (and I do have low back pain).

8 or 9 years ago my wife and I bought 5000 series sleep number bed (cal. king size.)

I removed the top (pillow) layer of foam and replaced it with 3" of high density memory foam. The bed is wonderfully comfortable and is holding up superbly. With the sleep number adjustability AND the memory foam, we the best of both worlds at a very reasonable cost.

fuzzy96,

My wife and I have had a sleep number bed (5000 series) and added a 4 inch Memory Foam topper to it. WE absolutely love it and have never had another bed like it. The only thing I would change is going with the 7000 or 9000 series Sleep Number bed, but we went the route we did because it saved us quite a bit of money. I don't know if they still have it, but our Memory foam topper was only $100 at Overstock.com.

I hope this helps!

Mike

I have one and love it. It will take a while to find the right sleep number but once you find it it is great. And no more valleys.
