I am a newbie. Have had ResMed unit about three weeks. My wife complains that the machine is "so loud that i can't sleep." She has gone so far as to unplug the unit during the night --while I'm using it.

I am tempted to return the unit and write off the cost, but wanted to offer up my dilemma to the group. Anyone else faced such drastic negative response? Any reasonable explanations I can use?

I have a very similar situation going on at my house. I have a Remstar Plus M Series and a Resmed Swift Nasal Pillows System. The CPAP is really loud. It's the machine itself when I breath out, the fan is really loud. I had sent it off for repair and they put a new fan in it. The tech at the doctor's office that's just the way they are. I've tried putting it under the bed, but it kind of echos. I put 2 pillows on it and it helps some. My wife doesn't unplug me, but asks me nicely to turn it off. I have to try to wait until she's asleep to turn it on if I don't fall asleep first which happens alot. She is a very light sleeper.

My wife is a very nice person and has put up with a lot of sleep deprivation between of my snoring/CPAP and her light sleeping. I'm just trying to find a way to make this work without sleeping in another room. I may try the syrofoam cooler thing. Any other ideas (besides D-I-V-O-R-C-E)?

You are using a very basic machine. There are newer, better, silenter models.

Both DeVilbiss and Sandman have new super quiet models. The Resmed version II series is also very quiet.

Buying the cheapest of those out of pocket will cost you less that a dollar a night for one year of a quiet sleep environment.

If you can at all afford it, buy a machine that has full data recording capability - better yet, one that is also automatic. But even if you can only afford the cheapest - do it, because you need your therapy, and both of you need sleep - and in the long run, it's a small price to pay for making life more pleasant for a person who you want to share the rest of your life with.

It takes a while to load, but its message is very clear.

Simply put: you need a machine to keep you form choking, both of you need a machine that is S-I-L-E-N-T.

Nice thread necro, since the styrofoam cooler trick may rank up there with the Repti-Heat cable as an incredibly creative solution to a basic problem with CPAPs.

One other suggestion that falls under the white noise category but is a little more specific. Blueair makes a HEPA air filter that, besides does amazing things for air quality (it's probably the second best out there besides the much more expensive and louder IQAir series, which I have as well outside my bedroom), also has a very, very quiet sleep mode that largely cancels out the noise from my CPAP. I've stopped using earplugs as a result.

Return your wife, if she doesn't care if you live or not she has to go. Because if you have apnea and don't treat it, you are history.

id ask which is worse, the machine or the snoring.

For crying out loud! Ear plugs (I prefer the cream colored styrophone ones) are CHEAP, easily found in pharmacies and grocery stores, AND, are a hell of a lot easier to get used to than a #*&$# mask. GET SOME for your spouses!

Noise is not a basic problem with CPAP machines. I have a Fischer & Paykel that can hardly be heard. Many times I have felt the exhaust vent to make sure it is running. Ozij mentions two other quite brands.

Noise is a problem with some models of machines.
