Headgear & Scalp Disease

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. For the last 6 days I've had an itchy and sore scalp, presumably from the headgear. Neutrogena has not helped so today, I poured Listerine on the back of my head a few times to kill whatever was causing the problem. I'm wondering if the headgear straps are used on others at the Medical Supply store to find one the patient wants, and then put back in the bag?

The reason I ask, is that it happened to my son. When he got his orthodontic headgear straps, the doctor fit him with several different sizes and he got a scalp disease. And the doctor admitted it may have come from another patient when fitting headgear, or its just irritation from wearing the headgear for the first few nights.

You are not alone in this.

Many people have issues with the headgear. There are covers for the straps and various parts of the mask if you need it to sleep more comfortably, and to wake up unscathed.

I have always had a problem with itchy scalp when sweaty, especially when wearing a hat. Wearing headgear every night brought on full blown seborrheic dermatitis. Stopped wearing hats on my morning walk, modified my headgear to minimize contact, and use coal tar (Nuetrogena T-Gel) and salicylic acid (Denorex) shampoos. Still have a minor problem where the remaining straps make contact above my ears.

Funny how no one knocks the neoprene. I'm going out on a limb on this one, as CPAP.com evaluated my product/invention
and basically said that they were not interested as it had no advantages. (Surely they jest!)

My headgear is patent pending in the USA. I am a RRT and know about the patents and little change in the cpap/bipap headgear.
The side straps are made of medical grade material and easily clean. None of my headstraps have been used on anyone.

I'm still trying to figure out the physical differences between CPAP headgear and BIPAP headgear? I thought they used the same mask, why does one need to order BIPAP headgear and not CPAP headgear? What if I have a Bilevel? Do you have Bilevel headgear?

Definately check with pada... I've got psoriasis in my scalp and she's made me some covers for the headgear of my usual mask.

If you read the fine print, my FFM instructions say to wash the headgear before using the _first_ time. I think that helps some.

Use a free and clear dish soap (e.g., Seventh Generation) and rinse well. Be sure that it's completely dry before using.

Wow, what a great subject. I have had issues with my scalp for years. It was diagnosed as Seborrhea although my symptoms are more like hives and not dandruff. It has gotten alot worse in the last six months which correlates with the new mask & headgear for my full-face mask. I am about at my wits end. Maybe the headgear is aggravating an existing condition. Maybe Pad a Cheek covers would help the situation but...

with some masks you can rig them up with *hose (stockings, panty hose whatever) i.l.o. the one provided. when I first got it I didn't like the headgear that came with it so I rigged up with cut up pieces of nylon hose and it worked well. For now I seem to tolerate the regulation issue headgear. * Not my idea, see previous postings for ideas for this re different masks if interested, under lab ratting probably - Sorry, If I wasn't so tired I might remember!

No but I'm concerned that it could make us bald. Note that baseball players have receding hairlines from those caps.

Recently my scalp has been itching alot. Appears to be nothing there, just red from scratching. Use Wisp cloth headgear. Selsin Blue shampoo did not help. Can't tolerate vinegar.

Have you seen a dermatologist?

My husband has extremely red inflamed patches on his head where the cpap lines are attached only. We have tried everything, and found nothing that works. Do you have any suggestions?

Cover the straps with something.
