I'm a 43 year old male and I weigh 190 lbs. I'm 5'9" tall and my cholesterol and BP are fine. I've been the same weight for 10 plus years. I just starting regular walking and eating better and hope to end up at about 175-180 ideally. I'm in terrible shape from little activity. My apea is mild, so I believe I have a chance to stop treatment if I can get in shape and lose weight.

My BMI is 21.5, in the middle of average. On my sleep study the doctor gave the recommendation that I lose weight as recommendation #2. (I think he was asleep when he made that recommendation.

I was down to 125 but was too skinny at that weight. Now I weigh 142 and am 5'8" I do aerobics at least 5 times a week. My overall cholesterol has gone as high as 268 with the LDL being high, too. Now it's down to about 230, with still bad LDLs. I take meds for high blood pressure, too, keeping bp at an average of 130/76 with the meds. I eat a fairly healthy diet usually. I hope that the CPAP therapy will bring down my bp so I can go off the meds.

Genes have a lot to do with it.

Dear Qrlylox, Please don't give up - on yourself, on the WLS, or on your family! I thought for sure I would never make it to WLS myself - I thought I'd have a heart attack or stroke first. Couldn't even climb the stairs to bed. My babies were 2.5 at the time. I felt like they didn't ask to be brought into this world so I needed to everything at my disposal to make sure I was around to see them through it. It doesn't help that it was my 41st birthday the day they were born.

I had the high blood pressure, was on medication for diabetes, had back and knee problems couldn't walk a block without being out of breath, couldn't play with them on the floor. And the one time I got in the tub with them I thought I'd never get out! I took up 2 seats on the bus/train and was constantly embarrased.

But I have since learned that those that judge me don't count!!! It's MY opinion that does and those of the people around me. My weight has nothing to do with WHO I am except to make me more compassionate of others. We unfortunately wear our problems for everyone to see.

I did get my WLS and lost a total of 100# but developed severe ventral hernias -- twice in 6 months!!! That ended all exercise which ended the weight loss. I gained back about 20 of it so I'm now hanging around 250. But still - heck of a lot better than 330!!!!!!! There were people in there much worse than my situation, but I was very proud of each and every one of them just as I am of you! You are trying your best to have a life saving operation and doing the best you can to take care of your problems.

As a ray of hope, I came out of the surgery off diabetes medication and BP meds and haven't had to take any since. My HDL/LDL ratio in my docs words is "excellent", my BP runs about 120/80, and my blood sugars are under 90 every morning. Yesterday, in fact, I had a low sugar attack and almost fainted! My bad - I didn't eat anything for lunch except a couple granola bars -- too much sugar which causes a crash! OJ, cheese on toast and a chicken caesar salad got me back to "normal" (or as close as I can get LOL)

Keep your chin up! Keep fighting the insurance! If you can or have to, change insurance when you get a chance! I would think with your issues you would be a prime candidate! Don't give up ever! There are people there and here who truly love you!

MY WEIGHT

Post by Arizona-Willie » Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:21 am

I'm 65 years old male

5'8" ( shrunk from 5'9 1/2" in my younger years )

weight - 196

BMI = 29.8

When I retired I was 154 ( sigh )

no exercise other than jumping to conclusions

bad knees / hips / shoulders even getting arthritis in my eye!!!! Doc says it's an inflammation just like in your joints causes increased internal pressure in the eye. Never heard of such a thing.

bp is fine
cholesterol good under 150 thanks to zocor was 301 years ago

I think I actually had diabetes for years but I was thin so no one checked for it. I called myself hypoglycemic because I would get the shakes and weak every 2 or 3 hours unless I ate something .. preferably sweet.

Felt just like it does now when my sugar goes low.

My diabetes seems to be a mild case. I rarely go over 200 on the test but I do try to watch the carbs and if I know I am going to have a meal with over 35 carbs I take a half a starlix pill.

Problem with the darn pills is that taking them often drives my sugar low and I'm reaching for the sugar pills. That's why I cut them in half.

No realistic prospects for losing weight. I probably take in well under 2000 calories / day ( which they claim I should have ) but since I sit in front of this magic box all day and in front of the tv all night I can pretty much forget losing weight.

228 lb. and 6' tall... if I was only in a better mood anmd felt more in control of my life, I would get some of the muderous pudge off my belly.... it will kill me othewise. I notice that when I get weight off the pressuer needed goes down on my APAP so I hope that I will eventually get weight down and improve my OSA too.
I know that even if I don't losing weight by itself will lower my chances of diabetes and early heart attacks and all the other little delights of maturity that I don't wish even on my enemies.
At least I have started working out regularly so am not terribnly out of shape

too much anger and self-hate, thats next target to conquer

Tired of being UNHEALTHY and feeling BAD

Post by Dillard » Sun Jun 24, 2007 5:48 pm

Anyone else exasperated by the lack of comprehensive care for sleep disordered people? Once my neurologist translated my sleep study, he fell off the face of the earth. My GP just keeps prescribing pills. And, most days I wonder why I don't fall over dead because I feel TERRIBLE!

At 5' 6", I weigh 215 lbs and feel awful. I am 65 lbs over my ideal body weight and feel hopeless about losing the extra. I have been happily married to my wife for 19 years and we have 4 wonderful children. BUT---everyone I love keeps a pace faster than I can keep up. I never feel well enough to exert the energy needed to embrace life.

I have been 100% compliant on CPAP for 2.5 years. Since CPAP, my depression has subsided somewhat. However, my blood pressure has risen to 195/90, I have gained 25 lbs, I am borderline diabetic, and I feel bad all the time.

AFTER getting on CPAP, I have started taking Effexor and Welbutrin for depression, Ritalin to focus, Protonix for GERD, Tricor and fish oil for high cholesterol, Naicin for high triglycerides, and Synthroid.

44 year old male
6'-4" and 240 lbs.
Totally out of shape. Quit smoking 2 months ago and gained 5 or 6 pounds. I'm now going to try and lose 40 or so pounds now that I have the smoking solved. I started CPAP 17 days and have vowed to get my arse back in shape.

Hannah is eight years old and weighs 60 pounds. She is by no means overweight. Hubby is 38 years old. He won't tell me how much he weighs but he is quite fit . Neither of them fit the "profile" . Now me on the other hand, I am not saying how much I weigh but have some to lose, by all rights I am the one that should have apnea!

i posted on this thread back on page 16, but i just wanted to reply to yours by saying that it is my firm belief that i am now overweight (only in the last 3 years) because i have sleep apnea...not the other way around, and in a way, your hubby and cutie-pie daughter illustrate that point

btw, i have a logan, too

p.s. does anyone else find that the quote function just does NOT work sometimes?!

Weight question

Post by TheeMrFrog » Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:03 pm

I am just curious. Why do you want to know how much we all weigh? Do you think sleep apnea has something to do with weight? Just curious.....Mr Frog

What is your weight?

Post by JennyLouWho » Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:45 pm

I am a 45 yr. old woman (46 this coming Fri! YAY!) I am 5' 3 1'4" tall and weigh 175 lbs. (My pulmonologist wants me to lose 25 lbs.! Go figure!) I had a heart attack at age 31 (horrible family history...all 5 of us siblings had heart attacks and/or bypass surgery in our early 30's)and have since have had 2 stents placed. I also have diabetes (again...horrible family history....all 5 of us siblings have it also. Have no clue where it came from...our parents did not have it, nor did any other relatives we could find).I also have mild COPD (from 15 yrs. of smoking and numerous pneumonias that formed scar tissue on my lungs). My cholesterol and trygliceride numbers are very good (with medication) as is all of my blood work that I routinely have.My blood pressure seems to run low to normal (again, with medication). I now have an issue with an unknown GI bleed that I have had since Nov. of last yr. that is a big mystery to my GI doc. I have gained 25-30 lbs. in the last yr. due to not being able to exercise very well at all. (I have shortness of breath and cardiologist is saying possibly moderate CHF).My hubby and I used to walk 3-4 miles a day. My pulmonologist also said that CPAP should help my motabolism. I have been on it since April 20th of this yr. So far, no change in weight! Well, I guess I answered the asked question. Sorry about the medical history, but felt it important for the weight question.
