Calling any Aussies - card reader and software problems

Post by grandmma » Sun May 11, 2008 5:17 pm

I've been on CPAP for about 8 months now. Previously, I had been taking my machine card to the sleep centre for readouts, and in between have been checking out the 7 day and 30 day data. This has become tiresome, and I've not had a printout done for a while now, so I've recently decided to purchase the software and card reader. Turns out in Aussie you have to have the doctor's approval for this. What the....? Seems a revenue raiser to me, and I'm pretty ticked off about it.

Initially the sleep specialist I went to saw me for 12 minutes, charged $240, of which $110 was received back from Medicare. I did query the huge charge, told them that this was totally unacceptable - all I needed was a referral for titration, not that challenging. They insisted they needed to book 45 mins "just in case". Reiterated my disgust. Prefer not to go back there. Anyone know if this is just revenue raising, or truth? Sleep centre assistance and advice (or lack thereof) has been less than desired, and I had 4 months of mask problems they were unable or unwilling to resolve without a huge insistence on my part.

On another subject relating to a current thread, I'm currently using Swift Mirage II nasal pillows, and also find medium size pillows will seal well for a time, then I need to swap to large to get a good seal....then back again. Weird, but as others have also apparently found, works.

You don't need a doctors approval to buy it here. Whoever told you that?

http://www.cpapaustralia.com.au will sell it to you.

As Big K said no need for doctors approval, we both have the software. Perhaps your talking Reslink? I'm not sure if you can purchase that one

Who, exactly, said that? Can they provide a written source for their statement? If not, they're just bluffing you to take your money.

> I've recently decided to purchase the software and card reader.

Who would know, and how would they know, if you purchased a card reader and software?

She's not using Resmed - she's using respironics.

Thanks for the responses. I am in Sydney, and am using the M Series Pro. The Sleep Centre I deal through, probably should remain nameless on a public site (?) - situated in Hornsby, if that helps, told me I have to have a doctor's approval, but they are connected to the sleep centre, and I am concerned it is a revenue raising exercise only. Perhaps I should call Resmed direct?

I live in Turramurra just down the road from Hornsby.

PM me & we will see what we can do - I can lend you a cRespironics compatible card reader for a short while & advise you how to get the low cost one from HK.

Cheers

Thanks guys for all your assistance and offers of help. Will definitely contact HK for a card reader. Cannot believe the industry self-protection which goes on over here. And SO glad I found this site. Cannot imagine how I would have (or if I would have) gotten this far or learnt so much otherwise.

You would think all industry 'professionals' - and I use that term lightly - would want us to succeed above all, including promoting ownership & supplying all materials and guidance to sites such as this to enable that. Just goes to show the notion of the 'old boys club' will never die, but be reborn in differing scenarios!

My experience with the Hornsby Sleep Disorder & Diagnostic Centre goes back nearly 5 years, but I certainly spent well over half an hour with a sleep physican on two occasions. He went through the prognosis and later diagnosis in good detail, explained the implications and the diagnosis/treatment protocol.

I had trouble with two F&P Acclaim 2 masks breaking and the Air Liquide shop at Hornsby was great about organsising replacements under warranty. Similarly they were very helpful with the Resmed S8 recall swapout. Apart from that and occasional mask "consumable" parts purchases I haven't had much to do with them.

Cheers,

Bill
