Report on CMS50E Pulse Oximeter

Hi All
I recently got my CMS50E. I have been using it each night for a week now.
I was wondering if there are guidelines for the results or is there anywhere on the net I can see "normal" graphs to see how I compare.
I got the oximeter because my girlfriend tells me that I stop breathing during the night so I suspect sleep apnea.
I do wake up quite a bit at night too... I mentioned it to my doc. but he said that if I am not wrecked during the day, I am probably ok.
I am a long time sufferer with gout and I read that there is a relationship between that and sleep apnea, hence the oximeter.
I have the gout under control now with Alopurinol but it would be nice to find the root cause and zap that.

What did your nightly saturation levels look like? Above or below 90%? I think the target is 93-95% and anything below 80% is a big warning....

I seem to average about 94%. That is the Basel SpO2. Average Low is about 92%
Practially every night I have had a single down spike that goes near or below 80. Maybe thats spurious.
This is a sharp spike. On the factory settings, have an average of about 16 Spo2 "Events" and around 140 pulse Events per night.....
I am going to set up a video camera synced with the oximeter so I can see and hear whats going on during these events and spikes.

Wouldn't a visit to the sleep center be called for now? I heard they've got great sound and video systems

The literature that I read says the following about SpO2:
• above 95% is normal,
• between 90 and 95% is cause for concern,
• below 90% calls for medical intervention (such as CPAP).
My CMS50E default parameter put the warning mark at 88%. My charts show a basal SpO2 typically between 96 and 97.5% but frequently the saturation goes below 95% and several times on a typical night also below 90% but never yet in my recordings below 82%.

The number change with the altitude is higher - normal SPO2 is then lower.

The reason I got the oximeter was to try and decide if I was a case for sleep study. As mentioned, I did say it to my doc but he dismissed it.
Where I live self employed people foot their own medical expenses. A night at the clinic and associated work can run into a few grand I heard. There is also a long queue and the risk that I would not sleep then (very likely). Maybe with an average of 94% I am not too far off the 95% and am ok.

I got the 50E meter and paid 130 for it-and i see it is still that price--it didnt come with a manual but they have the down load for it on there site- Southeastern Medical Supply-- i also set the low setting to 75% and the first night the alarm went off so it does have a alarm --that is why you can have a hi and low setting on it- i recently used it on my sister to prove to her that gaining 50 lbs and not having seen anyone in 4 years and using the same mask till it blew apart---was probably the reason for her melt down in life---------dahaaaaa meter showed low 02 for 8 hrs--so ---it can be a big help--it is simular to what they gave me before my sleep study and charged me $50 then they kept meter---if only i knew then what i know now--wow

I concur with riveredge1. It's a great tool to have. My neurologist / sleep specialist was REALLY pleased that I was using it to try to sort out my ongoing sleep problems. For instance, by using my pulse ox, I am now fairly certain that when my mask leaks like a sieve, my O2 levels drop. And sure enough not only do I sleep poorly, but have the classic headaches upon awakening, poor concentration during the day, etc. I also seem to have problems with muscle cramps at the same time the O2 sats drop. Instead of seeing it as an interference, he's REALLY, REALLY pleased I'm using tools to really MEASURE what's happening with my sleep.

I also have the CMS50E. The software download is a bit strange, but not bad. The dedicated cable is a bit strange, but it keep the size of the unit smaller. And I agree. for about $130 from Southeastern Medical compared to $50 per time from a DME. It's a no brainer. ESPECIALLY if you have ongoing issues that you need to monitor.

Does everyone need one? Nope. Does it help someone fighting ongoing issues. Yup.

I purchased a CMS 50E a few weeks ago from http://www.clinicalguard.com Their service was outstanding and my package was complete and they threw in a digital oral thermometer. I received the pulse oximeter, a miniature printed manual, a USB cable + charger, a tiny CD with the software and relaease notes, a custom soft carry case, lanyards for the CMS 50E and the soft cary case all in a nice small metal box. I paid $125 plus a small shipping charge. I also purchased for $40 extra a miniatue USB wireless sending and receiving kit. A small sending unit fits into the CMS 50E port and a slightly larger receiving unit fits into a computer USB port. The wireless kit is not necessary as the 50E tethered to the computer with the USB cable does the same. The wireless kit provides the freedom to move around. Since receiving the 50 E I have used it nightly. There are two programs that come with the 50E. The program identified by the Red Heart Icon receives and stores data via the USB Cable or the wireless kit and displays data real time. There are fields to record other patient information and comments. The session information can be saved to disk. The program identified by the Green Heart icon retrives the data saved in the CMS 50E memory or loads past saved sessions. The Green Icon program has a variety of pre-programed report formats and statistical calculations which can be viewed on the computer screen or printed. The unit is powered by a re-chargeable battery permanently sealed in the unit. In all this little unit is a marvel of miniature electronics technology.

First, I would like to thank all of you who participate in this forum -- I have learned more from you than I have from all the doctors and DME/sleep lab techs I've dealt with over the past six months. Thank you *very* much!

After being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea (AHI=62) and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (30+ arousals/hour), my sleep doctor told me I have "minor" COPD. He suggested I start using a Spiriva "HandiHaler." That's when I decided to buy my CMS50E. The little rascal is amazing and the doctor's diagnosis and recommendation were on target. Using the HandiHaler before bedtime has raised my basal SpO2 by 3-5 percentage points -- I've gone from a 92-94% range to a range of 96-97%.

Does anyone know what the "%Artifact" on the SpO2 reports means and how the "Adjusted Index (1/hour)" is calculated?

Also, has anyone found any useful "norms"/guidelines to help interpret the SpO2 Oximeter Report?

I made the software work - ONCE. Never again. I have never seen anything so badly written. It's been nearly 2 years, and I am re-reading these posts trying to find a clue on how to make the software and driver work for the CMS50E Pulse Oximeter, but I'm not getting anywhere. WHEN it works, it is amazing, but I am ready to give up and throw it away.
