i'm pretty sure that other people can change their settings so no one else's text shows up in colour, no?...it would be next to impossible for me to participate in chat if everyone's text was white, so i hope this isn't also an issue

You can change your own settings so everyone's color is your color. If you want everyone in bright hot pink you can. I happen to normally use white myself. Some people don't like to have everyone the same color as they follow the conversations by color.

PM's do come in in the person's color they use in chat - no way to block that except block that person's PM's by "ignore" commands. Ignore only works on PM's that I am aware of and not on the main chat window.

However, the Avatars/ "smiles" in motion in chat (no slinky not your forum avatar) can't be blocked or taken out that I know of except when you get some errors (have seen the errors but can't duplicate them).

Thanks Jules for resurrecting this thread. It is very important for folks to realize this issue. I too, am one who can not tolerate a lot of the avatars or anything that has an extremely quick constant movement. Funny, how some bother me and some don't though. But , I have the Firefox add on that was mentioned, Adblock Plus, and use it religiously. So, most of the stuff here, I can take care of. I have not tried to use it in chat, so I don't know it it will work on the avatars there or not.

I didn't realize that I was not the only one , I am glad that so many others have spoken about this. I never said anything to anyone for fear of upsetting someone. Like I said, I just block them out now, and don't have to worry about it. But there are a lot of folks here who don't have this feature on their browser, and have to deal with the problem in other ways. It helps to be reminded.

bumping this again - I had bumped this last on Dec 18th I think it was - just over a week ago but had taken off the bump

again, I do what I need to to be safe - if someone wants to pm in color I can't handle or uses an avatar in chat I can't tolerate, I walk away or leave

People need to be more aware and considerate of the needs of others -- not only here or in chat!!!!!

There's another thread going on today about someone who was "badly treated" in chat recently and didn't understand the icon issue, but nobody bothered to explain it before "abusing" the "new person".....
Now. That said, I wasn't there, and can only go by what has been stated in the other thread, but users in chat cannot assume everyone knows about the issue -- if there is something there that is offensive or causes issues -- ie. colors, moving icons, etc....please explain it to the "offender" -- I think that most of us would not hesitate to change whatever it is and go on with the chat. If they don't, just walk away and come back another day.....Once ignored for a time, people like that just kind of fade away.....
My avatar here is a mover, but I've never heard from anyone that it causes issues. I haven't logged into chat in so long that I don't recall what my "smiley" is there.....I don't go to chat for info anyway -- I go there because it's a "social gathering" for the most part -- if someone logs in that needs help and/or information, it is provided - but for the most part there's only so much xPAP you can chat about....

Thanks for bumping this up jules -- it's a subject that should be visited occasionally as it's apparent that people forget, or some of the newer members aren't aware of the issue.....

avatars on posts can be blocked by registered members when they are logged in - option in user control panel - however if you view a person's profile they show up there - not sure you can block them there with other settings - perhaps you can

font colors in posts can be overwritten too in browser settings I believe (I have used those as well as handicap accessibility - high contrast settings) - right now I have these things not in use

the hot pink F for gender -- not sure that can be overwritten or blocked - I know I had worked on it once it appeared and wasn't successful - it is asmall letter on the page and I don't try to look over there

I don't know all the ins and outs of what can and can't be blocked on webpages - I have things so they are fairly safe - I know I have blocked backgrounds with the accessibility options

I also know that the settings I had been using were not compatible with the new forum as I could not see the any of the "edit", "X", "quote", and "delete spam" buttons

Slinky, your avatar doesn't flash rapidly, isn't brightly colored, and is generated slowly and smoothly enough so that it is unlikely to bother anyone. And BTW, I've gotten some good chuckles from your tagline, and whoever I've quoted it to has always laughed.
