emoticons

Post by madipy » Wed Feb 13, 2008 12:23 pm

I had a very unsettling situation occur last night while on chat. The emoticons that have movement were causing me difficult. I hesitated to say anything but I'm epileptic. I sent a private message to 2 individuals and explained my dilema. One was very understanding and changed hers' She was even appologetic which certainly wasn't necessary. The other person elected to repeat his name with the emoticon over and over down the screen. I was very upset with his lack of sensitivity and politness. I think I handled the situation tactfully.

Unfortunately, there will always be inconsiderate people in chat rooms. Some people will be willing to change their avatars; others will continue to use it as if to rub it in and upset you. Don't let it get to you as there are bigger problems in this world we have to face. Just ask and if the people aren't polite enough to cooperate, walk away for a while until the room is again "safe" for you.

It is like if the conversation in chat is not one I wish to involve myself in, I try to ignore it until it turns to something I prefer to talk about. Some may consider it rude, but really it is "survival".

There are many of the "emotions" or "smiles" that cause me to get headaches. The worse is the pulsing for "shock". If someone is using an avatar I can't handle, I just go away from chat for a while.

The neon colored fonts especially the hot pink ones also trigger headaches for me. Red font triggers headaches for others. I set my options to have all the fonts be my own color . The main chat is all my color (usually white) but private messages come in color unfortunately. If I can't handle the person's color and they chose to pm me, I just ignore them.

Thank you for reminding us that there are some that can not tolerate the emoticons. These types of things do not bother me and so I forget that others might not be as tolerant of them.

I can not stand heavy perfumes or aftershaves/colognes as they trigger my asthma. I often encounter people in public places that of course are using these fragances. I politely move away from the area. Once we were seated in a restraurant and had a man nearby light up a big fat cigar. Of course that triggered an attack. I simply asked the waitress if we could move as far away as possible and they were very obliging.

Most people are very civil and understanding. The people I work with have gotten used to NOT wearing any type of colognes or perfumes because of me and I truly appreciate it but at times we will have a sub that must bathe in it or a parent that has put on way too much and I deal with it the best I can.

Take care of yourself and like jules said if there is someone ignorant or just plain selfish and won't cooperate take care of yourself and come back later when things are better for you.

Ooooh, SleepyCarol, I can sure sympathize and emphathize w/you on the colognes, perfumes, etc.!!!! My "smeller" is shot and I can't smell much but boy! I can sure smell those doggone perfumes and colognes!!! They give me one rip roaring instantaneous killer headache!!! I've been caught in an elevator w/those wearing perfume or cologne and it is pure torture! I have to get off at the very next floor and climb the stairs to the next floor or wait for the next elevator.

And car fresheners and scented air fresheners ..... I won't even get in a car anymore if they have one of those car fresheners hanging. I don't say anything but I also avoid going to friend's houses who use those scented air fresheners, sprays, candles, wall plug thingies .... We meet elsewhere for lunch or at another friend's or wherever. I went to ONE high mass. NEVER again! Christmas or Easter, I don't remember except that I had to get up and GET OUT! FAST!

Give me horse manure ANY time!!!

I also cannot tolerate many scents and have often had to change tables in a restaurant or not be able to go into certain shops. I had hoped that I wouldn't have to leave the chat as it has been so helpful and important to me. But if some people persist in their rudeness, unfortunately I will have to take that option.

I would suggest using Firefox and getting the add-on called Adblock plus. By right clicking on the offending image, you can opt to block it.

Rudeness in chat

Post by kteague » Wed Feb 13, 2008 5:09 pm

Madipy,

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Thanks for making us aware of your need, and please don't hesitate to remind us when you are in chat. And it's good to know that some are negatively affected by font colors. Please don't let that experience run you away. Most people who regularly visit chat would not want to cause anyone discomfort or possible harm.

Kathy

Madipy:

I'm sorry to hear of your experience. Some people are so insensitive.

I was really pleased to learn about Adblock and Mozilla Firefox, though. I've been using Firefox for a couple of years, now, and it's a great browser. I just tried the Adblock add-on, and it really does the job. If you're on a Windows machine, it looks like a great way to manage your own environment! Firefox and the add-ons are priced right...as my kids say, "Free.99"!

Youse a good kid, Jules, I think we'll keep you. I'm sure this is something most of us don't even realize or think of.

My Slinky avatar then could be harmful to some? I think my chat color is okay?

I have a young niece who has seizures and has to wear special eyeglasses anytime she uses the computer or watches tv. As I understand this takes care of the problem entirely. Have you looked into these? I am sure some member here can give you some information. If not, I will ask my sister-in-law.

Good luck.

I wonder if that's what drove madi away?

Some people get an attitude when you tell them it is bothering you. Kinda immature, to say the least.

I rarely ever visit chat but even here some get carried away with the graphics to the point of it being annoying and tacky,

on one of the other boards I visit you can change your member profile so those don't display, on that same board if you don't log in it won't display embedded pictures.

you might try editing your Profile and scrolling down to the bottom and changing some of your settings to "No", think they are:

Always allow BBCode: No
Always allow HTML: No
Always enable Smilies: No

it's that Slinky lady, blame it on her she's a troublemaker anyway

i think most people, myself included, just don't realize something like this could bother someone else...i certainly wouldn't want to be the cause of discomfort for anyone, and would appreciate a straightforward heads-up about such a thing...anyone who takes offence at being asked to ditch the graphics is just being childish and bratty...

by the same token, most people are just having fun and not intentionally trying to hurt anyone...now that i know this is an issue, i won't be using them in chat anymore

thanks for the heads-up
